Competition Begets Lifelong Friendships

L-R - CD Dunem, Matt Purgahn, Gus Aldana, Johnny Heintz, Derrick Matthews, Jorge Rodriguez
Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (January 7, 2019)   What does an Insurance man from Lake Charles, LA, two brothers who collectively served 45 years in the U.S. Army one of which has turned real-estate agent in Killeen, TX, a brick salesman from Houston, TX, a retired Airforce Airman who served 30 years and former government contractor in San Antonio, TX, an Automotive Collision Center owner from Round Rock, TX, and an IT Security Director from San Antonio, have in common?

Golf, competitive Golf on the Golf Channel AM Tour that is!

Gus Aldana, CD Dunem, Li’l Johnny Heintz, Derrick Matthews, his brother and former AM Tour player Chris, Matt Purgahn, along with father/son duo of Jorge and Ryan Rodriquez got together recently and it reminded us of what the tour is all about.

If asked, most of them can’t recall exactly when they met, but all will agree their friendships are a direct result of GC AM Tour events where this group started as early as 2008 and late as 2011 on Tour.  Collectively they have competed in more than 450 tournament events spanning from California to Myrtle Beach, SC.

When the AM Tour faithful contemplating a 50th birthday celebration for Derrick Matthews, the pillar of health amongst the group, golf it would be.  While a trip to the warm southwest, was preferred, a sold-out AM Tour Major in Scottsdale, wouldn’t stop the guys from making the trip the week after. What started as Tour Competition, as the primary reason to get together, has morphed into the lifelong friendships first, with some golf on the side.

Planning is already underway for their 2019 AM Tour Season, but the next golf “friendly” outing remains somewhat of a mystery.  However, when the “where’ question was posed to Gus Aldana, without hesitation he said, “England/Scotland.  We look forward to following those stories to come.

While this ragtag group of Texas Tour Members games have changed over the years, mostly due to professional requirements, their friendships have only grown and have come to be the epitome of what can happen when you get together for some competitive Golf on the Golf Channel AM Tour.  It’s like nothing else!!
