Dallas Tour Wraps Up 2017 Points Season

Scott R Chilcutt, Flower Mound, TX (August 27, 2017)   The Dallas / Fort Worth Tour, followed up the 2016 Tour Championship, back at Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound, TX.  Just some 100 days after the sale/purchase of Bridlewood Golf Club, the new crew has things on track and the course was measurably better than leading up to the closing when the previous owners were clearly working to make the balance sheet look better.

Great fairways and green conditions made for some low scoring, if the players stayed out of the gnarly rough.   Light winds and mid 80's, very unprecedented for this time of year, helped to end the 2017 Points season in a special way.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $730, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $18,600 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Coming into the weekend, Trophy Club, TX, member Nick Quast had not lost an event in six attempts on the season.  Quast, in fact, the winner at the 2016 Dallas Tour Championship had a string of eight wins but that string came to an end this weekend.  First-year player, Keith Strickland of Daingerfield, TX, was up to the task.  Starting on the par 4 - 10th, on Saturday, Strickland would make the turn +2, but then go on a birdie barrage, with five over his last seven holes, setting himself up with a six stroke lead heading into the final round.  On Sunday, Strickland would add another four birdies on the weekend, to finish his first Championship, with a five stroke cushion.  Never really able to get on track, Quast would settle for the runner-up spot with three birdies on the weekend, ahead of Brad Bugg of Ovilla, TX, rounding out the top three.

Senior Championship Flight:  Grand Prairie, TX, member Larry Vannatta set the pace early on Saturday, with four birdies to make up a -1 - 35 heading into the turn.  He added another birdie on the back, finishing with narrow one stroke advantage.  Back out Saturday, Vannatta did just enough to stay ahead of the field with two birdies on the front nine, to grab his fourth Championship on Tour and second of the season.  One back, Terry Rice of Midland, TX, held a steady line with four birdies on the weekend, to edge out, first year Forney, TX, player Thad Wilson, carding five birdies of his own on the weekend.

Palmer Flight:  Gabriel Brisco of Mesquite, TX, set a hot pace on Saturday, completing his first nine holes in -1, and a three stroke lead over Lewisville, TX, member Michael Barr.  Brisco then made the turn and gave way to the lead, with Barr matching his front nine total with the help of three birdies on the round.  Back to the course on Sunday, knotted up, the pair would start on the par 4 - 10th, Barr would pick up a stroke going out with three birdies, to two for Brisco, then both pick up another coming to the clubhouse.  In the end, the final four holes would make up the Championship, with Barr picking up his sixth win on tour and fifth of the season.  With his stellar play this year, Barr has been promoted with the handicap and will also be moving to the Championship Flight in 2018.  Brisco, with his second runner-up finish of the season, finished three strokes back,  three strokes clear of Fort Worth, TX, member Kirk Boerner, rounding out the top three, with three birdies on the weekend.

Hogan Flight:  Coming off a win at the Houston Tour Championship the previous week, Sven Bock of Richardson, TX, kept his hot ways ending his Saturday round with a birdie and a slim one stroke lead, over Fort Worth, TX, member Jeff Workman, with two of his own.  Bock, with a wedding, to attend between rounds, keep Workman honest until the par 4 - 11th when the lead would finally switch up, Workman would give it back on the 13th, finish with five straight pars, which wouldn't have been enough, except for the four stroke swing on the 36th hole of the event, when Bock got into trouble, relegating himself to the runner-up finish.  For Workman, it was his fourteenth win on tour and third of the season.  Amarillo, TX, player Tim Edwards started the final round in the third place spot and held on to round out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Dave Hanson of Granbury, TX, shared the first round lead with local, Flower Mound, TX, player Mark Rainwater, but that share ended on the first hole on Sunday.  Hanson would go on to widen the gap, then run into trouble on the par 5 -13th, but followed with five straight pars to pick up his fifth win on tour and first since June of 2015.  Garland, TX, member Stephen Lamb, four strokes out after the Saturday round, made the best of two birdies on Sunday to shoot the flight low round of the day and jump into the runner-up finish.  Rainwater, despite two birdies on Sunday, couldn't get past the par 4 - 9th without damage sharing the third place honors with Carrollton, TX, player Rick Swanson.

Sarazen Flight:  David Hickman of Rockwall, TX, followed a double par on the par 5 - 13th on Sunday with a birdie to finish out the season with his third win and ninth on tour.  For Hickman's stellar play of late, he was another that will receive the Performance Promotion, and play with the Hogan Flight starting the 2018 points season.  Three strokes back, Fort Worth, TX, resident Preston Miller, started the weekend on a tear, with a front nine +1 - 37 on Saturday, but came back to the real world, on his final twenty-seven holes, to finish in second.  One stroke back of Miller, the 2017 Sarazen Flight Champion, Darren Bufton,  with one birdie over the weekend, rounded out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   Fairview, TX, player Glynn Aldredge, four strokes back after Saturday,  picked up one stroke after nine holes on Sunday to Mark Donohue of Lewisville, TX, who had a share of the eighteen hole lead with Azle, TX, resident Jim Wright.  Aldredge then ran away from the par on the par 3 - 3rd, with an ACE, from 120 yards with an 8 Iron.  For Aldredge, it was his fourth-lifetime hole in one, carded his lowest round on tour and picking up his third win on tour and second of the season.  Donohue, back on tour after a hiatus since March, picked up the runner-up finish with four birdies on the weekend, and one stroke back, Wright took home the show place honors.

Jones Flight:  Down three strokes after the first eighteen, to Don Freitag, of Arlington, TX, Celina, TX, player Jeffrey Ackerman, Jr, made up the ground and more on Sunday.  Freitag, with two birdies on Saturday, and a career low round, +6 - 78, added two birdies on Sunday, but just couldn't keep the big numbers out of play.  For Ackerman, it was his third win, in his first year on tour.  Freitag recently promoted from the Snead Flight, proved that he can contend in the flight, finishing in the second spot, with Garland, TX, a first-year member, John Grimley rounding out the top three.

Senior Jones Flight:  First-round leader, Jeffrey Ackerman, Sr, of Wylie, TX, looking to make a double Ackerman weekend didn't see Euless, TX, member Tommy Templin coming.  Going out with a +3 - 39 on Sunday, Templin, took care of the five stroke deficit and cruised to a three stroke victory.  For Templin, it was his fourth win on tour and second of the season.  Ten strokes out of the lead after eighteen, Lloyd Reid, Jr, of Dallas, TX, carded Sunday's low round of the flight to jump into a tie with Ackerman in the runner-up spot.

Snead Flight:  Texas Tour Trophy maker, Ron Hardy of Lewisville, TX, got to take another one home.  Hardy shared the eighteen hole lead with Duncanville, TX, player Christopher Johnson, and took the lead on the first hole of the day on Sunday the par 4 - 10th, then cruised to the victory.  For Hardy, it was his tenth win on tour and third of the season, shooting the low round on Sunday, his lowest since 2015.  Five strokes back, Johnson took home the runner-up finish, with 2017 Senior Snead Flight Champion Zane Latham of Valley View, TX, and 2017 Snead Flight Champion Jason Jenniges, of Weatherford, TX, sharing the third place finish.

Stonebriar - Beautiful Monday

Scott R Chilcutt, Frisco, TX (August 7, 2017)  Stonebriar Country Club, last on the Golf Channel AM Tour schedule in May 2009 made its way back on the calendar for the Stonebriar Championship.

Weather watchers, sure to forecast a washout, were pleasantly surprised, that not only did we play, we played driving to the ball.  Temperatures in the upper 70's for most of the round, only got to around 87, crazy for Dallas in August.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $460, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $16,670 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Plano, TX, player Gant Bills got back on track to pick up his first win on tour since the 2016 National Championship.   Bills, with two birdies on the front nine, held out a two-stroke advantage over David Wright of Flower Mound, TX.  Wright, with two birdies of his own on the round, edged out McKinney, TX, member Carl Meyers, with three birdies on the day, by one stroke.

Senior Championship Flight:   Retirement seems to be sitting well with Odessa, TX, traveler Marshall Morgan's game.  Morgan, even par on the back nine, with two birdies on the front, would have placed himself in a playoff if the Championship Flights were combined, picked up the win with the Senior group, by five strokes.  For Morgan, it was his eighth win on tour and first of the season.  Jack Carlile of Lewisville, TX, carded three birdies on the round, two of them coming at closest to the hole winners, to finish in the runner-up spot, with Forney, TX, member Thad Wilson rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  It took first year player, John Elmore of Keller, TX, extra playoff holes to pick up his first win on tour.  Fort Worth, TX, Kirk Boerner, starting on the 4th hole, played the first fifteen holes in +3, looked to have things locked up but went +3 on his final three, opening the doors for Elmore to force the sudden death.  For Boerner, it was his second runner-up finish since his move back to the Palmer Flight, and the pair cleared Michael Barr of Lewisville, TX, by three strokes.

Senior Palmer Flight:  McKinney, TX, member Michael Fyfe, kept on his top spot finishing ways, with his fourth Championship of the points season.  Fyfe, with a birdie on the par 4 -17th, has only been out of a podium finish, one time out of eleven attempts this season.  Jalil Danesfar, of Trophy Club, TX, with one birdie on the round, shared the runner up honors with Coppell, TX, member Mark Colangelo, with three birdies of his own.

Hogan Flight:  Chuck Levene of Lewisville, TX, playing a limited schedule in 2017, picked up his first win, in his second year on tour.  Levene, with a birdie on the par 3 - 6th, cleared Richardson, TX, member Sven Bock by three strokes.   Bock used a birdie on the par 4 - 2nd, to edge out Aldolfo Perez of Rowlett, TX, by a single stroke.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Carrollton, TX, player Ken Johnson, kept up his winning ways.  Johnson, with two birdies on round, captured his sixth win on the season with three shots to spare over runner-up finisher, Jeff Gandy of Fort Worth, TX.  Gandy, with a birdie on the par 3 - 8th edged out Mansfield, TX, player John Cox by one stroke.

Sarazen Flight:  Coty Shearer of Fort Worth, TX, made the most of an eagle on the par 5 - 12th along with a birdie on the front nine to force extra playoff holes, with Keller, TX, player Nick Easen.  Easen, with two birdies of his own on the day, relegated the Championship to Shearer on the first extra hole for his first win on tour.  Rockwall, TX, member David Hickman, with a birdie on the par 4 - 16th, rounded out the top three, two strokes back.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Oklahoma Tour traveler, Ernie DeBruler, of Wichita, KS, self-proclaimed to have many Tin-Cup moments, started on the day on the par 4 - 14th and commenced to play his first thirteen holes -6, with six birdies.  The incredible run would come to a halt on the par 4 - 9th, but even with +9 over his final five holes, couldn't get in the way of the Championship.  It was DeBruler's, ninth win on tour and second of the season.  Five strokes back, Granbury, TX, player Jerry Emmons finished in the runner-up spot, with Jon Neff of Frisco, TX, rounding out the top three.

Senior Jones Flight:  Competing in his second year on Tour, Mike Lee of Dallas, TX, picked up his first win.  Lee, finished just one stroke clear of Fairview, TX, player Larry Tolson, with Midland, TX, traveler Mike Jones taking home the final podium spot.

Snead Flight:  Fort Worth, TX, player Douglas Pritchett, edged out Christopher Johnson of Duncanville, TX, by a single stroke for his fourth win of the points season.  Three strokes back of Johnson, Fort Worth, TX, resident, Keith Huddleston rounded out the top three.
