Champions Warmed with Win - Champion Circle

Scott R Chilcutt, Fort Worth, TX (November 23, 2013)   On a day, more suitable to fireside football chatter, 64 players made the call for the Fall Championship on the Dallas Tour.  A mid 30 degree morning with drizzle and north winds blew through after heavy rains on Friday, challenging even the most hearty.

In the seven flights contested, three first time winners matched up with an additional three winning for the first time in newly promoted flights, left only a multiple flight champion in the Championship flight. Leo Washington, one of those newly crowned champions also took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Highland Village, TX member John Bohling took advantage of birdies on the par 3 - 5th and par 4 - 16th for his third win on tour.  Winner in his last outing at the Bobcat Open @ Texas Star, Andrew Braun of Trophy Club, TX birdied his first and last holes of the day to fall one stroke short of back to back wins.  Tim Williams of McKinney, TX and Keller, TX player Guy Nickels shared the third place honors three strokes out of the lead.

Palmer Flight:  Greg Hawkins of Argyle, TX finally broke into the Palmer Flight winners circle after winning four as a Hogan player, for his fifth win on tour.  Hawkins played the back nine in +2, and was enough for a three stroke victory over Haslet, TX resident Ryan Ramos. Tyler Jewell of Dallas, playing in his first event on tour, rounded out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Sapulpla, OK player Tams Howard played in a previous Oklahoma Tour event as a guest, received his membership credentials shortly after as a birthday present and parlayed that gift into a win, his first time out. Houston Tour traveler, Gus Aldana started out with four consecutive pars after beginning play on the sixteenth hole, gave back his three stroke lead on the par 4 - 2nd and then swapped the lead with Howard the rest of the round to finish one stroke back after a double on his final hole. Rockwall, TX member Joe Roy had his best finish as a recently promoted Hogan Flight player finishing just two stokes out of the lead.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Playing out of nearby Haslet, TX, Phillip Holt commanded his first victory on tour.  Holt's previous best finish, T2 at the April Flower Mound Open @ Bridlewood, birdied the par 4 - 9th for a six stroke advantage over runner up Jalil DaneshFar of Trophy Club, TX.  Denver Roden of Irving, TX finished in the show position, four strokes back of second.

Sarazen Flight:  Preston Miller of Fort Worth, TX made his 49th round on the AM Tour count for his first career win. Runner up finishes over the years on tour have got him close, but he just hasn't been able to finish it off when it counted until today.  Starting on the 12th hole, Miller played a rocky stretch, but a birdie on the par 5 - 18th seemed to right the ship, playing the front nine in +5 for a one stroke victory over Ronald Spencer, also of Fort Worth.  Nick Easen of Keller, TX and Arlington, TX member Mike Frenzel shared the third place finish.

Jones Flight:  North Richland Hills, TX player Luis Dayer picked up his third win on tour and first as a Jones Flight player.  Dayer, promoted to the Jones Flight in early September, held on to a four stroke advantage over runner up finisher Ray Hund of Plano, TX.  Despite taking an eleven on the short par 4 - 4th,  Dion Casto of Parker, TX played well enough over the remainder of his round to take home the third place finish.

Snead Flight:     Leo Washington of Watauga, TX became the third first time winner on the day by six strokes over  Doyle Fleming of neighboring Haslet, TX.  Fleming, not out of the top three in four events on the 2014 schedule,  used a birdie on the par 4 - 8th to edge out first time player Daniel Payne of Fort Worth, TX by a single stroke.

Golf Channel Am Tour Major on the Mississippi Delta

Golf Channel Staff, Tunica, MS (November 10, 2014)  Am Tour Members traveling from 29 different states, Peurto Rico as well as Alberta Canada, converged on the Mississippi Delta for the first Major Championship on the 2014 points year.

Tunica Resorts, once known as Robinsonville, MS has grown to the third largest gaming region in the US behind, Atlantic City and Las Vegas.  Just along the eastern shores of the Mississippi River, 30 minutes south of the famed Beale Street, "Home of the Blues .... Birthplace of Rock N' Roll" in Mempis, TN hosted the first, Fall Classic at Tunica.

The Hale Irwin designed, The Links at Cottonwoods, with it's knarly bermuda rough and quick undulating greens matched up well with the Links at Tunica National, a Mark McCumber signature layout where water comes into play on 16 of the 18 holes.  Patient and committed play awarded the 12 flight Champions, where over 37 players received 2014 National Championship invitations.

David Feherty's Troops First Foundation was the recipient of $1,510 from the generous 50/50 donations during the weekend.

Results:

Championship Flight:  Georgetown, KY resident Tony Brown came from two strokes off the lead to capture his first Major Championship victory and his sixth win on tour.  Brown, without a birdie at the Cottonwood course, carded three on his final round to finish four strokes ahead of first round leader Chris Bertaut of Morgan City, LA.  Two strokes back of Bertaut, local player Olive Branch, MS member Marcus House, battling sickness,  held on to his first round third place position for the final National Championship invitation.

Hogan Flight:  Pete Kaufman of Bolingbrook, IL always has a way to get into the mix.  Pete, playing in the final group, birdied the par 4 - 10th to stay just ahead of a hard charging Atlanta Tour member Jp Stenzel by three strokes.  Stenzel birdied the 16th and 17th to take the lead, but found trouble on his 36th hole to finish in the runner up spot.   Wes Hueseman of Town and Country, MO a previous winner at the Pacific Northwest Major Championship  rounded out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Hopkinsville, KY member Rick Boling picked up his third win on tour and first Major Championship.  Boling, starting the final day five stokes out of the lead took three stokes off his first day total to finish one stroke clear of Saturday leader Tom Joy of Aurora, IL.  Mark Bruhn of Fairfield Glade, TN,  and Lee's Summit, MO player Bob Hunter shared the show position and final National Championship qualification.

Fall Bobcat Open @ Texas Star

Scott R Chilcutt, Euless, TX (November 3, 2013)  Texas Star events on the Golf Channel Am Tour, coined as the Bobcat Open because of the local feline population got a move to the Fall schedule with the thought that a limited field would get to finish in the daylight.  Stiff and cool southerly breezes, mistakenly forecasted as 5 - 15 from the east, went with tough and some rough greens along with tight driving areas made for a long day for some.

Jeff Workman of Fort Worth picked up the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving by one stroke over Melvin Wilson III.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  With a three way tie for the lead in the clubhouse it looked like we'd need to secure some extra holes when Andrew Braun of Trophy Club, TX drained a 30' putt for birdie on his final hole to nix that thought.  Braun, with two birdies on the day picked up his fourth win on tour with John Bohling of Highland Village, TX along with Dallas, TX members Sean Skellenger and Anthony Peppler sharing the runner up finish, just one stroke back.

Senior Championship Flight:  Denton, TX member Greg Richard ran away from the field with a -1 on the front,  +1 on the back, even par round to grab his second win in four events on tour.  At the end of the day, the top three in the Senior Division would have won or at least tied for the win in a combined flight.  Traveler, Al Swanson from Edmond, OK made three birdies on the day for the runner up finish, with self promoted from the SR Palmer Flight,  Sean Fenton of Fort Worth, TX rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  First time tour player, Craig Parr of Gilmer, TX birdied the par 5 - 7th for a one over par front nine, slid back to the field just a bit with a forty one on the back, but commanded the win by six strokes over Crowley, TX member John Sells.  Sells, with a birdie on the par 5 -10th stayed steady on the back nine to finish in the runner up spot by six over Fort Woth, TX member Chris St Vigne finishing in the show position.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Kem Albritton of Garland, TX birdied the par 3 - 3rd and the final hole the par 5 - 18th for a three stroke advantage and his eighth win on tour.  Lewisville, TX resident Mark Taylor looked to make it close after a stretch of par's, but ended his bid with a double on the seventeenth. Roland Lewis of Tulsa, OK and Whitney, TX player Jeff Feyerherm shared the third place honors three strokes back of Taylor.

Hogan Flight:  Ranger, TX player Scott Harper muddled through a pair of 43's en route to a one stroke victory, his eighth on tour.  Leading the field after the front nine, Tim Edwards of  Amarillo, TX gave it back with a triple on the par 4 - 13th, but held on to the runner up finish by one stroke over Mansfield, TX member Cade Hall finishing in the show position.

Senior Hogan Flight:    James Galbraith of Prosper, TX went out with birdies on the par 3 - 3rd and par 4 - 6th to secure a seven stroke victory.  With the win, Galbraith secured his first victory in three years on tour.  Runner up, Phillip Holt of Haslet, TX equaled his best finish on tour a T2 at the 2013 Flower Mound Open @ Bridlewood.   Rockwall, TX member Bob Moreau, self promoted himself after the National Championship and made his first bid as a Hogan player worthy of a third place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Dallas, TX resident Melvin Wilson III went out in +3, birdied the par 5 - 10th to secure his fifth win on tour.  Three strokes back,  Jeff Workman of Fort Worth, TX started his day with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st  to add his runner up finish to three T2 finishes in his first year on tour. Eastern Texas member Gary Lee of Tyler, made birdie on the par 4 - 6th and par 4 - 17th to round out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Dale McFarland of Crowley, TX became another first time winnner at the event.  Birdies on the par 5 - 7th and par 4 - 17th led the way for a three stroke victory over Rick Allaire of Dallas with McKinney, TX player Ray Tyczki  in third for his best finish on tour.

Jones Flight:  A three way tie for the lead after regulation between visiting Carolina player Del Jackson of Archdale, NC, Tom Stockton of Euless, TX and  Allen, TX member Shawn Privat would be settled with a scorecard due to darkness. 44 on the back nine was just enough for Jackson to pick up his fifth win on tour.  Stockton would take the second place prize fund with Stockton and Privat sharing the second and third place points.

Snead Flight:  Traveling Oklahoma Tour member Rick Henthorn of Yukon, OK had a two stroke advantage at the turn, but couldn't hold on to the lead with a tough seventeenth hole when Don Freitag of Arlington, TX recorded his eighth win on tour by a stroke.  Henthorn parred the final hole in darkness to secure the runner up spot with Haslet, TX player Doyle Fleming rounding out the top three one stroke back.
