Grand Prairie Classic - Tangle Ridge

Scott R Chilcutt, Grand Prairie, TX (May 19, 2018)   Tangle Ridge Golf Club, hosted another version of the Grand Prairie Classic on Saturday.   This round, unlike many previous others, lacked the rain, but the winds 18-20 MPH with higher gusts certainly didn't help the scores.  Add to it, a month full of tournament play before us, left the greens fluffy and bumpy, that could have used a good roll job.  The Hill Country like facility will be back on the schedule, next year, but will tinker with the schedule a little more, in order to get it back to the fast and firm greens we've enjoyed in the past.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $540, bringing the Texas Tour events total to $11,530 contributed to the Foundation in 2018.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Dallas, TX, first-year player Trey Whitling, made a mess of the front nine, in spite of a birdie on the par 4 - 3rd, but then played the back in -2 with the help of three more birdies to pick up his second win in as many attempts.  One stroke back, playing in the first event he was able to start and finish, Nathan Burns, of Dallas, TX, with a birdie on the par 3 - 9th, shared the runner-up spot with Cedar Hill, TX, member Chris Ransbottom, with a birdie on the par 4 - 15th.  Ransbottom, was a winner, his last time out, at the cold, windy and wet, Battle at Burleson.

Palmer Flight:  It took a foursome to go back to the course to settle the score in the flight.  First-time Grapevine, TX, player Jordan Stockton, with two birdies on his round, Chris Force, of Fort Worth, with two birdies and an eagle on his round, Murphy, TX, player Dallas Webster, in his third playoff of the year and Gregory Hadden of Rowlett, TX.  Hadden, a winner his last time out, birdied his final hole of the day to get in the mix and took off two strokes his first time on the par 4 - 10th to pick up his second championship of the season and fifth on tour.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Competing in his first year on tour, Tolar, TX, player John Williamson, carded four birdies on the day, to pick up his first win.  One stroke back, Gabriel Brisco, of Mesquite, TX, with four birdies of his own, came close again, but fell short for another runner-up finish, with Tim Bush of Granbury, TX, and two birdies on his day, rounding out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  It was a Houston Tour top three kind of a day in the flight.  Nestor Alvares, of Houston, TX, with a birdie on the par 5 - 13th, picking up his National Championship qualifying third win of the season.  One stroke back, Sugar Land, TX, traveler, Steve Nagy, grabbed the runner-up finish, with Rick Smalley of College Station, TX, and a birdie on the par 4 - 6th taking the final podium spot.

Senior Hogan Flight:   Making the most of two birdies on his round, Myles Gallemore of Irving, TX, went +4 - 76 to win his second event of the season and sixth on tour.  Four strokes back, Garland, TX, member Stephen Lamb, with a birdie on the par 4 - 3rd, and traveling tour member, Kyle Lewie of Waco, TX, with two birdies of his own on the day, shared the runner-up finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Dallas, TX, player Preston Moxcey, became another two-time winner in as many outings after picking up the championship the week before at Indian Creek.  Moxcey,  with a birdie on the par 3 - 17th, finished two strokes clear of Carlos Malaver Osorio of McKinney, TX with a birdie of his own the par 5 - 18th.  One stroke out of second place, Judy Harris of Abilene, TX, and Saint Cloud, FL visitor John Mariz, with a birdie on the par 5 - 18th split the third place honors.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Off the tour since the Dallas Fall Championship in October, where he picked up the win, Red Oak, TX, resident David McCasland, carded four birdies, for his second win of the season.  Two strokes back, Mackie Crossan of Abilene, TX and Dallas, TX, player Rodney Wren, with a birdie at the par 4 - 11th, split the runner-up finish.

Jones Flight:  McKinney, TX, player Ray Tyczki keep on his winning ways, picking up his fifth win since the January TPC Sawgrass Open Major Championship.  Kevin Crosson of Abilene, TX, and Dallas, TX, member Mike Lee, were relegated to a share of the second place finish, four strokes back.

Classic at the Creek - Second Attempt - Mothers Day Weekend

Scott R Chilcutt, Carrollton, TX (May 12, 2018)  Originally scheduled in March, the Classic at the Creek, was flooded out the first time around.  With no chance of playing the event on the first date, luck would have it that the Saturday before Mothers Day, would be available, and lucky it was.

The Indian Creek Courses, in Carrollton, TX, were in as good a shape as we've seen them in the years we've visited the club, pointing us towards, hopefully, a May or early June date in 2019.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $650, bringing the Texas Tour events total to $10,990 contributed to the Foundation in 2018.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Trophy Club, TX, member Nick Quast, went on the high side of par for only the second time this year, but still was able to capture the win, his third of the season.  Quast, with two birdies on the back nine, finished three strokes clear of Randall Grimes of Plano, TX.  Grimes, with a birdie on his first hole of the day, limped in on the back, to finish one stroke clear of Dallas, TX, member Austin Hill and Keith McKelvy of Granbury, TX, sharing the third place honors.

Palmer Flight:  With a birdie on the par 4 - 9th, Gregory Haddon of Rowlett, TX, turned his back nine around, adding two more birdies on the 16th and 17th, for his first win of the season.  Haddon, with four events this season finishing in the runner-up spot, picked up his fourth win on tour and first since June 2014.   Two strokes back, Murphy, TX, resident Dallas Webster, with two birdies on his card, finished all alone in second, with a pair of player, four strokes back.  Reid Darnell, of Southlake, TX, recorded his best finish in his first year on tour, and Richardson, TX, member Steve Boughnou, with a birdie on the par 4 - 17th, shared the third place finish.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Bedford, TX, player Keith Johnson, with three birdies on the day, stamped his Senior National Championship qualifying third win of the season.  Two strokes back, Gabriel Brisco of Mesquite, TX, stayed one stroke clear of the pair of third place finishers.  With two birdies on the round, Mark Tayor of Coppell, TX, and Tolar, TX, player John Williamson, with one birdie on his card, split the final podium spot.

Hogan Flight:  Playing in his first year on tour, John Harcrow of Houston, TX, has taken some time to work out the nerves of tournament play.  With his best finish, of a sixth, and nothing close to a sub eighty round, Harcrow, made birdie on the par 4 -13th, to card a 79, two strokes clear of Lewisville, TX, player Shawn Whitaker.  Whitaker with a birdie on his first hole of the day, the par 4 - 1st, equaled his best finish of the year, at a February Houston event. One stroke back, first-time player Christopher Chilcoat of Northlake, TX, and Rowlett, TX, resident Michael Schmidt shared the third place honors.

Senior Hogan Flight:  In the first group of the flight to finish, Houston Tour player, Jeff Green was itching to make the trip south to his home in Coldspring, TX.  Then the leaderboard, starting coming back to him.  Green with a birdie on the par 3 - 5th, made his way all the way to the top, after the final group finished, for his fifth win on tour and fourth of the season. Bullard, TX, member, Bill Clark, was one of those that had to come back to Green.  Clark, one stroke back making the turn, played his next seven holes in +1, but ran into a wall on his last two holes, to card the second place finish. One stroke back of Clark, Glynn Aldredge of Fairview, TX, not out of the top two at local events this season, with two birdies on his day, rounded out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Completing his thirteenth event, in his first year on tour, Preston Moxey of Dallas, TX, picked up his first Championship.  Par on his final hole, the par 4 - 18th would be just enough to finish one stroke clear of three players, knotted in the second place finish.  Judy Harris of Abilene, TX, with a birdie on the par 3 - 12th,  David Holcomb of Dallas, TX, and Oklahoma Tour traveler, Jeff Closterman, playing out of Ketchikan, AK, split the runner-up honors.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Rockwall, TX, player Bob Moreau and Dallas, TX, first-year player Robin Marvin, matched front nine, back nine scores to forces extra holes, but did it in different ways.  Marvin, with three pars in his final four holes, forced the sudden death with Moreau after he finished his round with three birdies.  Back to the par 4 - 1st, it would end in a similar result to the last time Moreau teed it up coming up short in the playoff.  For Marvin, it was his first victory where the pair ended regulation, one stroke clear of  Rhome, TX, player Mike Cox, rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Steve Pearson of Plano, TX, picked up his third win in as many attempts, notching his ticket to the National Championships.   Four strokes back, Frisco, TX, member Srinivas Pokunur, finished in the second place spot, with David Farmer, JR of Dallas, TX, rounding out the top three.

Senior Jones Flight:  Hill Country Tour, traveler Phil Lewis, of San Antonio, TX, became another three-time winner on the season, grabbing his qualification to the Senior National Championships, in September,   One stroke back, Frisco, TX, player Trecia Freeman, finished in the runner-up spot, with Ray Tyczki, of McKinney, TX grabbing the final podium spot, one stroke back.

Snead Flight:  Zane Latham of Valley View, TX, not in need of a Senior National Championship qualification, with two top-three finishes in Majors this year, grabbed his eighth win on tour and fourth of the season.  Duncanville, TX, player Christopher Johnson, with a birdie on the par 5 - 3rd, finished one back, two strokes clear of Midland, TX, traveler Paul Ray, rounding out the top three.

DFW Tour @ Heritage Ranch

Scott R Chilcutt, Fairview, TX (May 6, 2018)   Same song, different dance.  Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club, home of the Fairview Classic on the Golf Channel AM Tour, Dallas Tour. Perfect weather, to go with light winds and warm temperatures, greeted players to a great Sunday.

While a few holes, specifically, the par 3 - 4th and the par 3 - 16th, aggravated many with the hold-ups, the biggest difference this year was the scoring on those two.   At previous events, those two would play in the top five hardest holes on the course, but this round they were relegated to six and seven, with the par 4 - 7th jumping to the top at 1.54 over par.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $660, bringing the Texas Tour events total to $10,340 contributed to the Foundation in 2018.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Trophy Club, TX, player Nick Quast, only one stroke clear making the turn, birdied his next two holes, to put a stamp on the Championship, two under par.  For Quast, it was his eighteenth win on tour and second of the points season.  Four strokes back, Randall Grimes, of Plano, TX, falling just short in a playoff at the NW Arkansas Major Championship, his last time out, finished in the runner-up spot with two birdies on his round.  First-time player Niklas Ruiz of Wylie, TX, with a birdie on the par 5 - 3rd,  and Lewisville, TX, member Jack Carlile, with three birdies on his front nine, shared the third place finish.

Palmer Flight:  Kirk Boerner, of Fort Worth, TX, was one back making the turn, but then all he stepped on the peddle.  Boerner, finished his back nine, -1, with a birdie on the par 5 - 17th, to pick up his thirteenth win on tour and fifth of the points season.  Rowlett, TX, member Gregory Haddon, with a birdie on the par 4 - 10th, finished four strokes back, with the pair of Tony Lyon of Stephenville, TX, with three birdies on his day and Murphy, TX, member Dallas Webster, also with a birdie on the par 4 - 10th, splitting the final podium spot.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Starting the day on the par 4 - 10th, the pair of Jalil Daneshfar of Trophy Club, TX, and McKinney, TX, member Micheal Fyfe, made the turn one back.  While both went about the back nine in different ways, the pair would finish with equal front nine, back nine scores to force extra holes.  Back to the par 4 - 1st, it would only take a 360-degree roll around and into the cup for Fyfe to win in the sudden death playoff with a birdie.  For Fyfe, it was his third win notching a Senior National Championship qualifying spot.  Two strokes back, Nic Linde of Keller, TX,  rounded out the top three, with an eagle on the par 5 - 11th and birdie on the par 4- 7th.

Hogan Flight:  Bill Nay of Plano, TX, made the turn with a one-stroke lead and held on coming to the clubhouse for the victory.  For Nay, with a birdie on the par 5 - 8th, it was his second win on tour and first since the 2015, DFW Tour Championship. One stroke back, Richardson, TX, member John Hickman, picked up his third runner-up finish of the season, with Michael Schmidt, of Rowlett, TX, making the most of two birdies on his round, rounding out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  With a score that was recorded as arguably a 3 OR 5, three was entered and Jamie Sansom of nearby Allen, TX, looked to be the winner.  After Sansom brought the discrepancy to the committee, it was corrected, leaving Sansom tied for second place, with Bedford, TX, member Darren Bufton, picking up his third win of the season and first since his promotion to the Senior Hogan Flight.  One stroke back, Fairview, TX, local Glynn Aldredge, with a birdie on the par 3 - 12th split the runner-up honor with Sansom.

Sarazen Flight:  Starting the round on the par 4 - 10th, Scott Sears of Carrollton, TX, looked to have an uphill battle coming to the clubhouse, three strokes back, but St. Peters, MO, traveler Shea Armstrong, came back to the field with a tough final hole.  Sears picked up his sixth win on tour and second of the season, Armstrong, recorded his best finish, in his first season on tour and Jeremy Nolan, of Rockwall, TX, finished third.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Rockwall, TX, member Bob Moreau, a winner his last time out at Waterchase, and Burnie Rodgers, of Haslet, TX, with a birdie on the par 5 - 3rd, needed more holes to settle the score.  Back to the par 4 - 1st, it would only take one hole, for Rodgers to pick up his twentieth Championship on tour and first of the season.  One stroke out of the playoff the pair of David Day of Rockwall, TX, and Grand Prairie, TX, player Tom Stockton, split the third-place finish.

Jones Flight:  Ray Tycski of McKinney, TX, got back on an early season roll.  Tycski, picked up his fifth win on tour, four of those coming this season, with three in a row in his first three of the year.  Tricia Freeman of Frisco, TX, finished in the runner-up spot, for the second time this season, with a birdie on the par 3 - 16th, with Haslet, TX, member Doyle Fleming rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Plano, TX, member Jeremy Smallwood, and Ron Hardy of Lewisville, TX, battled coming to the clubhouse, with Smallwood taking the upper hand on the final hole for his first win.  Hardy, with a birdie on the par 3 - 4th, let the lead go against him on the par 4 - 8th and could only match him on the final hole to settle for second.  Duncanville, TX, resident Christopher Johnson, with a birdie on the par 4 - 7th, finished in the third place spot.

Father / Son Kind of Day - Fort Worth Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Fort Worth, TX (April 29, 2018)  Waterchase Golf Club in Fort Worth, lived up to its consistently great course conditions once again on the DFW Tour.

Unlike events leading up to this one, where we were writing about terrible weather, with warm sunny temperatures, and a bit on the windy side, the theme of the day turned to a Father / Son kind of finish.

In the first two flights to finish, Father Jack Whitling, and Son, Jack (Trey) Whitling, III, completed rounds tied for the top spot in their respective flights, where both would go on to win in playoffs, add to it in the Championship Flight playoff, Jeremy Frenzel, had his father, former tour player Mike Frenzel on the bag.
Next up, the Palmer Flight, where Scott Harper and late father Stan, loved to come to the Fort Worth facility and compete. During the just over two years on Tour, Stan and Scott traveled to 49 events together, and Stan won his first on tour at the Forth Worth Championship in 2014. Making the win even more special for Scott, it would have been Stan's 75th birthday on Sunday, and we know where he got his motivation.  It was a special way for all of us that knew him to remember Stan.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $690, bringing the Texas Tour events total to $9,160 contributed to the Foundation in 2018.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Playing in his second event on Tour, Trey Whitling, of Dallas, TX, made the turn knotted at the top of the leaderboard with Bedford, TX, player Rachel Smith.  Both played the front nine, in even par with single birdies.  Three strokes back, Jeremy Frenzel, would make up the distance coming to the clubhouse to force extra holes, with Whitling.  Back to the par 4 - 1st, Trey would make birdie for the Championship.  Frenzel relegated to the runner-up finish, now  0-2 in playoffs, where his combined score, during three holes of extra play is -1, hasn't beat himself, simply got topped by hot play.  Smith, finished just one stroke out of the playoff rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Ranger, TX, player Scott Harper, back one shot making the turn, played through an emotional back nine, to pick up his National Championship qualifying third win of the season and sixteenth on tour.  One stroke back, Tony Lyon of Stephenville, TX, playing from new distances with his recent move to the Palmer Flight, carded a birdie on the tough par 5 - 3rd, to finish in the runner-up spot, with Dallas, TX, member Jeff Bankard, rounding out the top three.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Starting the round on the par 5 - 10th hole, Jack Whitling, of Wylie, TX, looked to have things in good order, taking a three-stroke advantage to the back.  But then came to the back nine, Bedford, TX, player Keith Johnson, a winner his last two times out, birdied three of his next five holes, and then added another at the par 4 - 9th to force extra holes.  Back to the par 4 - 1st, the pair would again match scores, requiring another at the par 3 - 2nd, where Whitling and Johnson would match the scores the first time through, giving the Championship to Whitling.  For Jack, it was his second win on tour, both coming this points season. Three-strokes back, with a birdie on the par 4 - 4th, John Williamson of Tolar, TX, rounded out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Rowlett, TX, player Michael Schmidt, looked to have things going in the right direction with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st, but then ran into trouble finishing the front nine.  Back three strokes making the turn, Schmidt would finish his final nine holes in +2, to pick up his second win on tour, by two strokes.  Billy Eubanks of Crowley, TX, with two birdies on the day, would finish in the runner-up spot, two strokes back of Schmidt, and three strokes clear of third-place finisher, Brian Hebert of Allen, TX, where Hebert carded a birdie on the par 5 - 3rd.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Tied up making the turn, after starting on the par 5 - 10th, Dave Hanson of Granbury, TX, made the most of a birdie on the par 5 - 3rd, to edge out Fort Worth, TX, member Sal Torres by a stroke.  For Hanson, it was his first win of the season and sixth on tour.  One stroke back, first time to finish an event on tour, Court Pontiff of Bullard, TX, carded three birdies on his round to round out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Fort Worth, TX, player Preston Miller, had a colorful scorecard.  The birdie on the par 4 - 11th, helped his cause, then backed up a ten on the par 4 - 17th with a par on the 18th, to pick up his seventh win on tour and second in as many attempts.  Abilene, TX, tour traveler, Judy Harris, with three birdies on her round, took home the runner-up honors, with the pair of Jeremy Nolan of Rockwall, TX, and Dallas, TX, member Ronald Occenad sharing the third-place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Rockwall, TX, member Bob Moreau, would out birdie the field, with three on the day to pick up his twelfth win on tour and first of the season.  One stroke with two birdies on his scorecard, Jerry Emmons of Granbury, TX, would clear a pair of players tied in the third-place finish by three strokes.  Grand Prairie, TX, member Tom Stockton and Rodney Wren of Dallas, TX, with a birdie on the par 4 - 15th would split the third place honors.

Jones Flight:  One stroke back going out, Steve Pearson of Plano, TX, equaled his back nine scores, proving to be just enough to pick up the Championship with a par on the last hole to record his fifth win on tour and second in as many attempts.  Haslet, TX, player Doyle Fleming, had regained the lead after the seventeenth hole, but couldn't finish out at eighteen, sharing the runner-up spot with John Grimley of Garland, TX.

Snead Flight:  Playing in his first year on tour, Midland, TX, traveler, Paul Ray, making it a double for the weekend after playing on Saturday in San Antonio, picked up his first win.  Ray was back one stroke making the turn but picked up two on the back for the Championship. Zane Latham of Valley View, TX, grabbed the runner-up finish, with another traveler, Mike Murphy of Corrigan, TX, rounding out the top three.
