Poolside at The Lakes at Castle Hills

Scott R Chilcutt, Lewisville, TX (April 20, 2015)   The Golf Channel AM Tour returned to The Lakes at Castle Hills for the first time since 2010.  Originally founded as the semi private, The Golf Club at Castle Hills, the club closed down during the summer of 2011 for major course renovations and opened that fall as the private The Lakes at Castle Hills.  Continuing with the renovations the club is in the midst of a complete clubhouse makeover that relegated the players poolside for registration and awards, certainly not bothering anyone that enjoyed the lunch buffet.

Heavy thunderstorms and rain leading up to the event, kept players from driving to the golf ball, but a beautiful sunny day with light breezes went along with those earlier course changes, leading to some excellent scoring opportunities.

Steve Killion (Senior Hogan Flight) and Kody Conover (Sarazen Flight) were "Up for the Srixon Challenge", winning their flights playing a Srixon ball and will get a dozen sent to them for the win.  Kody Conover breezed to a four stroke advantage over Todd Arnold for the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Trophy Club, TX, player Andrew Braun proved that warm up time is overrated once again.  Braun now an eight time winner on tour has two sub par rounds, a minus 5 - 67 at the  2013 Tarrant County Open @ Sky Creek Ranch and now a minus 1 - 71, both coming after he only had enough time to get from the car to the tee box.   Braun was tied making the turn with Gant Bills of Plano, TX, but went on to birdie three in a row starting on the eleventh for the championship.  Bills, carded all fours on the front side and made a single bogey on the par 4 - 10th that would turn out to be the difference.  Euless, TX, resident, Rusty Ramsey recorded three birdies on the day to round out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Todd Arnold of Fort Worth, TX, almost certainly on his way to a promotion to the Championship Flight, birdied the par 5 - 4th and par 5 - 12th to card an even par round for his second win in as many attempts. Flower Mound, TX member, David Wright made birdies on the par 4 - 9th and par 5 - 12th to finish two strokes back with William Hall of Granbury, TX, taking the third place honors, his best finish in limited play on tour.

Hogan Flight:   Bedford, TX, player Darren Bufton used a narrow one stroke lead going to the back nine over three players to keep that edge at the end of the day.  With the advantage, Bufton picked up his National Championship Qualifying third win on the season and fourth on tour.  Chad Maynard of Frisco, TX, carded birdies on his first, the par 4 - 1st and last the par 5 - 18th to finish one stroke back.  The Lakes at Castle Hills member, Shawn Whitaker rounded out the top three with a birdie on the par 4 - 5th hole.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Already qualified for the Senior National Championship with a GolfNow Performance Promotion earlier in the year,  Steve Killion of Sanger, TX, put a pair of 39's together with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 8th, for his third win on the season and eighth win on tour.  Jalil Daneshfar of Trophy Club, TX, matched his runner up finish at the March Classic @ The Creek with a five stroke advantage over Flower Mound, TX, resident Mark Rainwater rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  A late night Sunday, at the 50th Annual ACM awards at AT&T Stadium wouldn't hamper Roosevelt, UT, player Kody Conover from picking up his first win on Texas soil. Starting the morning on the tenth hole, with mother Kitty on the bag, Conover would make birdie on the par 4 - 15th and follow up with the only birdie of the day on the second toughest playing hole, the par 4 - 17th to make the turn at +1.  Five straight pars on his back nine would be plenty for Kody to pick up his seventh win on tour and first of the season.  Seven strokes back, David Hickman of Rockwall, TX, a four time winner on tour, would take the runner up honors with Dallas Tour, Sarazen Points leader, Preston Miller of Fort Worth, TX finishing in third.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Starting on what proved to be the toughest hole of the day, the par 4 - 10th,  Rick Allaire of Dallas, TX, shared the lead after his first nine holes.  Making birdie on the par 5 - 4th would end up being just enough for Allaire to win his second on the tour and first since the 2011 - HOU - The Woodlands Tournament Course event.  Two strokes back, Lewisville, TX local, Mark Donohue and Bob Moreau of Rockwall, TX, with a birdie on the par 3 - 16th would share the runner up finish.

Jones Flight:  Oklahoma Tour Member, Curtis Sinclair of Amarillo, TX, made the best of his travels, picking up his fourth win on tour and first since 2013.  Four strokes back, Plano, TX, resident Steve Pearson and Luis Dayer of North Richland Hills, TX would knot up the runner up finish.

Snead Flight:  Medellin, Columbia, native, William Hughes now residing in Tulsa, OK shot his best round of the season to pick up his first win in three years on tour.  Jason Jenniges of Weatherford, TX, made birdie on the par 4 - 6th to pave the way to his second runner up finish in as many attempts on tour with Lake Leon, TX, member Stan Harper and Don Freitag of Arlington, TX splitting the third place finish.

Easter Weekend at Pecan Valley

Scott R Chilcutt, Fort Worth, TX (April 4, 2015)   Another sellout on the Dallas Tour as players made their way to Southwest Fort Worth for the Pecan Valley Open on Saturday. Pecan Valley, just below the dam of Benbrook Lake has the Clear Fork of the Trinity River meandering through the layout.  Course staff did a great job getting the greens to run smooth after practice rounds showed a bunch of fluff.  Northerly breezes showed it's teeth occasionally, but generally held true to a course setup for the weather.

Kem Albrittion, edged out Zane Latham for the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving in a score card playoff.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:   Plano, TX first time player, Gant Bills had only two hiccups on the round, but added three birdies on the par 4 - 9th, par 4 - 10th and par 4 - 14th to shoot one under par 69 for the win.   Two strokes back,  Cameron Kirkpatrick of Dallas, TX finished strong with birdie on the par 4 -  16th and a near eagle on the par 5 - 18 for the runner up finish.  Home course local, Sean Fenton of Fort Worth, TX made birdie on the par 4 - 10th to round out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  New Orleans, LA native Todd Arnold now residing in Fort Worth, TX struggled out of the gate, going +6 after eight holes, but then got his game in order.  Arnold played the next ten in even par with birdies on the par 4 -14th and par 4 - 16th to win his first event in two attempts on tour.  Two strokes back, Kevin Evans of Springtown, TX carded his best finish on tour with the help of birdies on the par 4 - 8th and par 4 - 10th.  Four strokes back the trio of  Clay Johnston of Lewisville, TX,  Midland, TX first year player Brooke Schlemeyer and David Wright of Flower Mound, TX shared the third place honors.

Senior Palmer:  Senior Palmer mainstay, Kem Albritton of Garland, TX plunked along to his eleventh win on tour and second of the season.  Albritton's three over par put him out front of second place finisher David York of Graham, TX, with a birdie on his first hole of the day, the par 4 - 10th by four strokes.  Duane Dunton of Burleson, TX made birdie on the par 4 - 18th to pick up the show position finish his best of the season.

Hogan Flight:  Cody Wright of Dallas, TX stumbled going to his back nine after starting the day on the tenth hole, but re bounded to finish with three straight pars to win the flight by a stroke.  It was Cody's second win on tour and first since the 2013 Dallas Tour Championship @ The Tribute.  McKinney, TX player Navakiran Chitturi made birdie on the par 3 - 13th to solidify the runner up spot with a pair of players just one stroke back.  Nancy Geihl of Grand Prairie, TX, with birdies on both par threes on the front and Colcord, OK player Clifford Whittington with a birdie on the par 5 - 7th split the third place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:   The first of two Kansas invaders, Gary Schuessler of  Wichita, KS made birdies on the par 4 -5th and then had three consecutive birdies making the turn  to finish three strokes ahead of the field for his fifth win on tour and second since his promotion from the Senior Sarazen Flight.  Three strokes back, Bob Mulligan from Dallas, TX, with birdie on the par 4 - 12th and Cisco, TX member, Manuel Martinez with birdies on the par 4 - 4th and par 5 - 7th split the runner up honors.

Sarazen Flight:  William Trott of Keller, TX, playing in his first event on tour came out the big winner.  Trott, played both sides in +6 with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 6th for a three stroke victory.  Richardson, TX player Sven Bock took three strokes off the back nine to pick up his second consecutive runner up finish.  Preston Miller, residing just over the hill from Pecan Valley, followed up his 2014 win at the course with a third place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Swept in off the Plains of Kansas, Ernie DeBruler of Augusta, KS, picked up his first win since the 2013 Oklahoma Open @ Oak Tree with a three stroke advantage.  Runner up honors went to Alto, TX member Nicky Baugh with the help of a birdie on the par 3 -13th three strokes ahead of a trio knotted in third place.  Burnie Rodgers of Haslet, TX, actually played an iron on a par four, Davis Noble of Lake Kiowa, TX and Keller, TX player Joe Longley split the third place finish.

Jones Flight:   Tommy Templin of Hurst, TX started on the tenth hole, birdied the par 5 - 18th, but would double his last hole to open the door.  Valley View, TX player, Zane Latham  would par out his last two holes to force extra holes.  Going back out to the crazy par 4 - 15th Templin would bogey, just enough to pick up his first win on tour.  Gerald Knight of Aledo, TX carded birdie on his second hole of the day, the par 4 -11th to round out the top three.

Snead Flight:   Arlington, TX player Thomas Rauch made it two in as many attempts picking up his third win on tour.  Rauch made bogey on his final hole, the par 5 -18th to secure the win over Stan Harper of Lake Leon, TX and Weatherford, TX member Jason Jenniges tied up in the runner up spot just one stroke back.
