Scott R Chilcutt, Arlington, TX (May 18, 2014) Thirteen months after our first Arlington Championship some things were the same, but some were drastically different.
An Audubon Signature Sanctuary, Tierra Verde Golf Club home to the event, was near perfect in 2013. 2014 the majority of the course was the same, but the greens were not immune to the inclement weather over the winter and cool spring temperatures. Playing the putting surfaces with relief from the abnormal conditions almost brought the scoring back to the 2013 level, with the total field to par just under one stroke higher, while some flights actually scored better than the previous year with the winds that were present.
Tom Stockton of Euless, TX ran away with the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, with a six stroke cushion.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Four Championship Flight players made the turn at even par and the back would do little to split them up. Coy Dobson of Dallas, TX was square through the 12th with two of the three, but made double on the par 5 - 13th to drop to one back. Dobson would bounce back with two birdies in the next three holes to tie it back up with Rockwall, TX player Andrew Morsinkhoff after regulation. Morsinkhoff would par the first playoff hole for his fifth win on tour and second of the season. Ryan Timmons of Fort Worth, TX with an eagle on the par 5 -2nd and Wylie, TX resident Dallas Webster would share the third place honors, just one stroke out of the lead.
Palmer Flight: A trio of Senior Palmer players, take the top spots in the combined flight where the long par three holes would make the difference. Bryce Pool of Colleyville, TX, carded three birdies on the front nine and took a lead to the back that would hold up for his first win on tour, playing the par three's two strokes better than the field . One stroke back, Odessa, TX member, Jim Sumner played the final five holes in even par to finish in the second place spot. Kem Albritton of Garland, TX played the first two holes in -2 with an eagle on the par 5 - 2nd to round out the top three.
Hogan Flight: Dave Hanson of Granbury, TX made it two for two on tour. After winning his first time out at the Pecan Valley Open Hanson followed up, finishing his final five holes at even par for a one stroke advantage over fellow Granbury resident, Brack Blackwood taking the runner up spot. Burleson, TX player, Bryan Rich tied the top two players on the back nine for his best finish on tour, just two strokes out of second place.
Senior Hogan Flight: Four time winner on the 2013 season including the Border War at Rock Creek Resort, Houston Tour member, Bruce Beakley of Houston, picked up his sixth win on tour and first of the season. Four strokes back, Jalil DaneshFar of Trophy Club, TX held on to his fourth runner up finish on the season when James Galbraith of Prosper, TX matched DaneshFar on the eighteenth hole after making an eagle two on the par 4 - 17th.
Sarazen Flight: Melvin Wilson III of Dallas, TX distanced himself by a mile after finishing the front nine one under par, 35 with a birdie on the par 5 - 8th, then birdied the par 4 - 10th to go two under before succumbing to a string of bogies to finish. Wilson, picked up his sixth win on tour and second of the season after playing another environmental area course for the November Bobcat Open @ Texas Star championship. Daniel Galvan of Fort Worth, TX carded his best finish on tour in the second place finish with another Fort Worth member, Preston Miller building on his three wins on the season to grab the show position.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Jones, OK member, Stan Wilson and Steve Killion of Sanger, TX finished the front nine squared away, swapped the lead four times on the back before finishing knotted up in the first place finish. Out for extra holes, the pair finished the first sudden death hole, even on the par 4 - 18th, took it to the par 4 - 1st where Wilson would record his second win of the season and seventh on tour, with Killion relegated to the second place honors. Gerald McElvy of Southlake, TX and Crowley, TX member, Dale McFarland split the third place finish, three strokes back.
Jones Flight: Seniors take another combined flight. Tom Stockton of Euless, TX had a birdie at the par 5 - 8th which was his only bright spot on the front nine, but then went on a terror. Stockton, played the back in even par on four birdies to finish with a five stroke cushion, recording his third win on tour. Frisco, TX player Jon Neff, a runner up in his last two outings made it a third, after playing the front nine in +2 with birdies on the par 4 - 4th and par 5 -- 8th. Ron Hardy of Lewisille, TX rounded out the top three.
Snead Flight: New Orleans, LA native, Steve Pearson, now residing in Plano, TX picked up his first win on tour by ten strokes. Frisco, TX player, Jimmy Kim equaled his best finish on tour in the runner up spot with Tulsa, OK player William Hughes doing the same with the third place finish.
Senior Snead Flight: Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX started the day with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st hole and went on for another Championship on the Dallas Tour. Two time major winner on the season, Fleming notched his seventh win on the season. Arlington, TX resident, Les Conner recorded his best finish on tour two strokes clear of third place finisher, Stan Harper of Lake Leon, TX.
