Record Year - Record Rounds - Dallas Tour Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, The Colony, TX (August 17, 2014)  The fifteenth 2014 Dallas Tour event on the year long points schedule culminated the season at the Tour Championship held at The Tribute Golf Club on Sunday marking a season of sellouts and full fields.  The Tribute "Born in Scotland, Built in America" is a links style layout that pays homage to the legendary courses in Scotland set on the banks of Lewisville Lake.

Day one of the two day, 36 hole challenge for the players went off without a hitch until the final few holes of the afternoon wave.  Breezy conditions with overcast skies helped keep temperatures down and then came heavy gusts with what would become a topic of conversations on Sunday morning.  30% chance of Thunderstorms worked its way into 100% of lightning strikes, with a couple landing within 100 yards of the clubhouse on the final day.  With a 3 1/2 hour delay, play was scrambled from the expected split tee format to a shotgun in order to get players on the course, with the afternoon wave part of the calculations.   After the all safe decision was made, a perfect day of golf was in store for those that made the call.

Al Smith (Senior Palmer), Joseph Roy (Hogan), John Hilgers (Senior Hogan), Steve Killion (Senior Sarazen) and Scott Sears (Jones) took advantage of the Srixon Golf Ball Challenge and added a dozen balls to the golf bag.  William Hughes from Tulsa, OK wound up with the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving of Lewisville, TX.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:   Jared Taylor of Edmond, OK seems to have his game in check.  A ho hum first round, even par with two birdies and two bogies, morphed into missing the green only once on Sunday, added six birdies and Taylor finished the Championship at minus six.  Playing in his first year, Jared had a T2 his first time out, and has won five in a row since.  Wylie, TX member,  Dallas Webster birdied his final hole on the first day and took what momentum he had from the finish to shoot a +2 on Sunday, enough to edge out third place finisher James Williams of Addison, TX for the runner up spot.

Senior Championship Flight:   In an Oklahoma sweep of the scratch to 3.9 handicap members, another Oklahoma Tour player, Curt Howard of Sapulpa, OK set a record on the Dallas Tour.  Howard, with an eagle on the par 4 -13th on Saturday, added six birdies for lowest recorded round on the Dallas Tour, a -8 / 64.  Sunday proved to be a different challenge, but Curt rode the wave of his first round putting exhibition to post a minus one 143, six strokes ahead of runner up Marshall Morgan of Odessa, TX.  Morgan, with two wins on the season carded five birdies on the weekend to finish just one stroke ahead of Fort Worth, TX 2014 Season Points Champion,  Sean Fenton.  Fenton put six birdies together on his final found to better his first day score by four strokes, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Two days of play couldn't settle the score between a pair of Michael's.  Michael Taylor of Ennis, TX and Roswell, NM first year member Michael Taylor swapped first and second round scores to end all square after 36 holes.  Back to the course to settle the Championship, Hoyt was able to prevail in the playoff for his second win in as many attempts. Taylor, also a first year player, ended up in the runner up spot for his second in a row.   David Wright of Flower Mound, TX as three time winner on the season and Rowlett, TX player Gregory Haddon, the 2014 Points Champion, shared the third place finish.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Midland, TX traveler, Al Smith put together five birdies on the weekend with a pair of +2 - 74's to finish nine strokes ahead of the field.  Smith a four time winner on the season, including the Major Championship at the April Bayou Classic at Lake Charles and the May Sooner State Showdown finished out his weekend, with sites set on the Senior National Championship on a roll. Grapevine, TX member Terry Wooten finished off on Sunday seven strokes better than his final round knotted up in the runner up finish with Jacky Hawthorne of Dallas, TX in his first event of the year.

Hogan Flight:   Four strokes back after the Saturday round, Joseph Roy of Rockwall, TX stepped on it with a birdie on the par 4 -13th to take the Championship by one stroke.  Dallas, TX resident, Jeff Blackwood sat on an overnight lead, and was able to finish off the event to not only take the runner up finish, but the Points Championship on the Dallas Tour.  Blackwood carded four birdies on the weekend and ended up three strokes ahead of Scott Harper of Ranger, TX.  Harper's highlight of the weekend came at the par 5 - 12th hole on Sunday where he drained a shot from 240 yards for the double eagle / albatross two.

Senior Hogan Flight:   Tour invaders make up the Senior Hogan Flight finishers.  John Hilgers of Wimberly, TX a Hill Country Tour member, remained steady to pick up his sixth win on the season.  Hilgers only needed one birdie on the weekend to finish two strokes ahead of Iraan, TX player Doug Collins, also from the Hill Country Tour.   Collins, with four birdies on the 36 hole event, finished one stroke clear of Edmond, OK member Bud Surber, an Oklahoma Tour member, spending the weekend working towards the Senior National Championship.

Sarazen Flight:.    Keller, TX member, Nick Easen recorded an eagle Saturday on the par 5 - 9th along with two birdies to keep himself in the mix, just one stroke out of the lead.  Easen, the 2013 National Champion in the Jones Flight, played it safe on Sunday and picked up his second win on the season and fourteenth on Tour.  Hill Country Tour member,  Devin Brown from San Antonio, TX carded four birdies on the weekend to tie up the runner up finish with Dallas, TX player Melvin Wilson III, with two birdies of his own.

Senior Sarazen Flight:    Starting on the tenth hole on Sunday, Bob Moreau of Rockwall, TX got hot on his tenth and twelfth holes of the day with birdies to force a playoff with Sanger, TX resident Steve Killion  Killion, with two birdies on his Saturday round, went to the extra hole playoff and got some favorable bounces on the par 4 - 1st hole to win his first event of the season.  First round leader, Michael Hardegree of Wichita Falls, TX finished in the third place position, his second third of the year.

Jones Flight:   First round leader, Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX opened the door on Sunday for Carrollton, TX  member, Scott Sears to force extra holes to finalize the Championship.  On the first hole of the sudden death, Sears took home the prize, his second win on the season. Mike Logsdon of Wylie, TX and North Richland Hills, TX, player Luis Dayer shared the third place honors.

Snead Flight:  First round leader, Rick Henthorn of Yukon, OK by seven strokes, maintained the differential on Sunday to win by seven.  Tulsa, OK resident, William Hughes recorded the runner up finish with Arlington, TX player, Thomas Rauch rounding out the top three.

Las Colinas Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Irving, TX (August 4, 2014)  Las Colinas Country Club, home of the North Texas Shooutout on the LPGA Tour and the George W Bush Presidential Center's Warrior Open, once again played host to the Las Colinas Championship on the Golf Channel AM Tour, Dallas Tour.

Temperatures, still below our normal for this time of year, and excellent course conditions made for some tight battles.  Players testing live scoring at the event with the Golf Channel AM Tour APP, added a bit of excitement to those players that chose to watch the scoreboard.  Dave Hanson (Senior Palmer), John Hilgers (Senior Hogan, Mike Hardegree (Senior Sarazen) and Stan Harper (Snead) all won using a Srixon golf ball and will receive a dozen to add to there prizes.  John Lopez, edged out Brack Blackwood for the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving in a score card playoff.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  McKinney, TX member, Tim Williams made an eagle 2 at the par 4 - 5th to became a two time winner in the Championship Flight, backing up his first Flight win in 2013 at Las Colinas Country Club.  Fresh off of late night travels back from the weekends Western Classic in Las Vegas, Terry Rice of Midland, TX where he finished T4.  Rice made up ground on Williams with birdies on the par 5 - 10th and par 5 - 18th to finish just one stroke shy of the win.  Cade Grimm of Dallas, TX along with Royce City, TX player Kyle Miley and Andrew Morsinkhoff of Rockwall, TX shared the third place honors two strokes back of Rice.

Palmer Flight:  Brack Blackwood of Granbury, TX, recently promoted to the Palmer Flight, went out with three birdies on the front, one under par and held on coming back to the clubhouse for his second win on the season and tenth on tour.  Lewisville, TX member, Clay Johnston struggled on the front, carded a pair of birdies at the par 4 -12th and par 3 - 13th to shoot +2 on the back to get within five strokes.   One stroke back of Johnston, Rowlett, TX player Gregory Haddon rounded out the top three.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Already a two time winner in his first year on tour, Dave Hanson of Granbury, TX drew a promotion to the Senior Palmer Flight after establishing a tournament index over the weekend and didn't let it slow him down.  Three birdies and even par on the back nine was just enough for his third win, one stroke ahead of College Station, TX traveler, Scott Williams.  Williams played to a one over par on the back with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 12th for the runner up finish, one shot clear of Odessa, TX resident, Jim Sumner.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Playing in the same pairing, Jalil Daneshfar of Trophy Club, TX and Wimberly, TX traveler, John Hilgers couldn't settle the score in regulation.  Hilgers birdied his first hole out of the gate, and Daneshfar, birdied the par 3 -13th but the tale of the tape came on their back nine, when Hilgers doubled his final hole to set up the playoff.  After two more holes on the day, Hilgers finally closed out the Championship for his  sixth on tour and fourth of the season.  Michael Starks of Cleburne, TX carded a birdie on each nine of his day to finish one stroke out of the playoff, with the third place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  John Lopez of Saginaw, TX found the winners circle in his fourth event on tour.  Lopez, steadily improving his scoring in tournament play, birdied the par 4 - 5th and par 3 - 17th for a two stroke victory.  Nick Easen of Keller, TX, with a birdie on the par 4 - 12th and Dallas resident,  Melvin Wilson III shared the runner up honors.

Three strokes back, Derek Drake picked up the runner up spot with Lake Kiowa, TX member Davis Noble holding on to the third place finish by one stroke with a par on his last hole of the day.
