Southern Oaks Shines at the Battle at Burleson

Scott R Chilcutt, Burleson, TX (July 5, 2015)  Tucked in a housing addition, just to the east of I-35W and the Fort Worth Spinks Airport, sits Southern Oaks Golf Club in Burleson.  The Mark Brooks design, for years left to seemingly grow it's own grass has come through major renovations and enhanced course conditions of late.  Smooth greens and excellent conditions would only be part of the story. Winds picked up from the south to challenge the scores for the first ever stop on the Dallas Tour schedule.

Stan Harper (Snead Flight) was "Up for the Srixon Challenge", winning his flight playing a Srixon ball and will get a dozen sent to him for the win.  With a personal best low round, Andy Eldridge grabbed the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, by three strokes.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Starting out with eagle on the down wind, par 5 - 1st, Ari Rogers of Fort Worth, TX, would add three birdies on his round to pick up his second win in three attempts on tour.  Keller, TX member, Kade Konkle, would make the turn tied up with Rogers, with a couple of birdies and an eagle on the par 5 - 9th hole, would add another birdie on the back, but faltered down the stretch opening the door for Andrew Morsinkhoff of Rockwall, TX, to share the runner up honors.

Palmer Flight:   Flower Mound, TX player David Wright started out on a roll with consecutive birdies on one and two, added another on the par 5 - 9th to make the turn with a three stroke advantage over the field, proving to be just enough for his third win of the season and sixth on tour.  One stroke back, local Burleson, TX player Duane Dunton used a birdie on the par 4 - 7th to keep it close.  For Dunton, a multiple winner on tour, it was his best finish on Texas soil. Four strokes out of the winner circle, Drue Thompson of Irving, TX carded three birdies on the day to finish in the third place spot.

Hogan Flight:   Playing in the same pairing, Darren Bufton of  Bedford, TX, and Trophy Club, TX, player Zoey DaneshFar both started the day with birdies on the par 5 - 1st, then continued to duke it out with Bufton heading to #10 one stroke back.  Over the next six holes on the back nine, neither seemed to take a distinct advantage until the last three holes, where Bufton would take the championship by three strokes for his fourth win of the season and fifth on tour. For DaneshFar it was her second runner up in her first year on tour with Scott Striegel of Southlake, TX, carding his best finish just one stroke back of second place.

Senior Hogan Flight:  On a hiatus from the tour since the 2013 season, Jeff Bolton of Midlothian, TX, made his return count.  With two birdies on the day, it was plenty for his fourth win on tour.  Two strokes back, the pair of Trophy Club, TX, player Jalil Daneshfar and Steve Killion of Sanger, TX, both carded a birdie on the day to share the runner up honors.

Sarazen Flight:  Sven Bock of Richardson, TX, decided to make it an exciting finish once again.  In the last three outings, Bock has gone to sudden death overtime, this time with a different player,  Keller, TX,  member Nick Easen.  Back out to the #10 hole for the playoff, both would make bogey, then went to eleven, where Bock picked up his second win on the season, both in playoffs, and third on tour.  Two strokes back of the pair,  Jason Shuffield of Frisco, TX, picked up his second consecutive third place finish after his National Championship qualification at the Srixon Championship Major at La Cantera in San Antonio, TX.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  First year player, Tim Brown of Richland Hills, TX, used birdies on the par 5 - 11th and par 5 - 15th to pick up his second win on tour.  Six strokes back, Simms, TX, traveler Billy Gilmore, with birdie on his final hole of the day, the par 5 - 9th, grabbed the runner up spot, with Lake Kiowa, TX, member Davis Noble rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight:  In his fourth year on tour, Fort Worth, TX player, Andy Eldridge has been close a few times this season, but this time it wasn't close.  Eldridge with a birdie on the par 4 - 16th walked away with his first win on tour, by nine strokes.  Runner up, Ron Hardy of Lewisville, TX, made the best of his birdie on the par 3 - 6th to stay just ahead of third place Carrollton, TX, finisher Scott Sears.

Snead Flight:  In his twenty second event on tour this season, Stan Harper of Lake Leon, TX picked up his fifth win of the season and ninth on tour.  Tour member since the 2009 season, Douglas Pritchett of Fort Worth, TX, just missed the win by two strokes with Dwain Smith of Georgetown, TX, carding the third place honors.
