Open Championship in Frisco

Scott R Chilcutt, Frisco, TX (July 18, 2015)  On the weekend of the famed Open Championship at St.Andrews, the Dallas Tour hit the links on Saturday at the Trails of Frisco Golf Club. With crazy weather, wind and flooding rains, delaying the finish to Monday, in Scotland, the only similarity to the Texas event was playoffs.  Hot, sunny and steamy would describe the day, with three out of the eight flights requiring extra holes, two of which started the sudden death with three players knotted in the top spot.

Phillip Holt (Senior Hogan Flight) was "Up for the Srixon Challenge", winning his flight playing a Srixon ball and will get a dozen sent to him for the win. Matching his win in the flight, Holt went on to grab the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, by three strokes.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Midland, TX, player Terry Rice seemingly left the possibility of a win at the screwy par 4 - 17th with a double bogie, but Sean Fenton of Fort Worth, TX returned the favor on the par 5 - 18th with a double of his own.  Fenton, with three birdies on the day, and Rice with a couple of his own, would end up taking extra holes to finalize the championship.  Back to the par 5 - 10th, Rice would get fortunate when his second shot cleared through a batch of trees for an opening to the green, when Fenton's second would dribble back into the face of a bunker.  In the end, par would be just enough for Rice to pick up his fourteenth win on tour and third of the season. Keller, TX, player Kade Konkle would card three birdies on the round to finish out the top three, two strokes back of the pair.

Palmer Flight:  Just five days removed from a T3 at TPC Craig Ranch, Scott Harper of Ranger, TX, would take the help of two birdies on the day to post his first win since a Golfnow performance promotion to the Palmer Flight.  It was Harper's twelfth win on tour and third on the season.  Mc Kinney, TX, member, Chase Petersen struggled on the final hole of the day to finish one stroke back for the runner up spot, with  Landon Hulcy of Joshua, TX, carding his best finish on tour with the show place finish.

Hogan Flight:  In the second playoff of the day and first with three players, Darren Bufton of Bedford, TX, Trophy Club, TX, first year player  Zoey DaneshFar and Gabriel Brisco of Mesquite, TX would end the round all tied up.  Brisco, would end up going out on the first playoff hole, after troubles from a fluffy bunker, while DaneshFar, with three birdies on the day and Bufton, with two on his back nine, would take it to the par 3 - 11th, where Bufton would prevail, picking up his sixth win on tour and fifth of the points season.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Haslet, TX player, Phillip Holt, had just enough of an edge making the turn, with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 6th, when both he and Jalil Daneshfar of Trophy Club, TX, matched back nine scores to record his sixth win on tour and second of the season.  For DaneshFar, it was his fifth runner up finish on the points year, to go with one win. Garland, TX, resident, Steve Lamb took a three stroke lead to the back nine, with the help of birdie on the par 5 - 7th, but hit a brick wall on the later stages coming to the clubhouse, finishing with third place honors, matching his best finish of the year.

Sarazen Flight:   After going two for three in playoffs his previous three outings, Sven Bock of Richardson, TX finally picked up a win without extra holes.  For Bock it was his third win of the season and fourth on tour. Frisco,  TX, local Jason Shuffield, coming off his first win at TPC Craig Ranch the previous Monday, made two birdies on the day, which proved to be just enough for the runner up honors over points leader, Preston Miller of Fort Worth, TX rounding out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Swapping front nine / back nine scores, the trio of Rick Allaire of Dallas, TX, Richand Hills, TX, player Tim Brown and Mark Donohue of Lewisville,TX, went back to the course to settle the score. Pars on the first playoff hole for Brown and Allaire would leave Donohue, the current points leader with the short end of the straw.  Matching pars again on the par 3 - 11th, it would take the pair one more hole to finalize the championship, where Allaire would pick up his second win on the season and third on tour.

Senior Jones Flight:  Luis Dayer of North Richland Hills, TX made the most of eight pars on the round to pick up his third win of the season.  Lewisville, TX, resident, Ron Hardy used consecutive birdies on the par 3 - 3rd and par 4 - 4th for the runner up finish, his third on the season to go with a win, last time in Frisco at the November Frisco Lakes Challenge.  Just two strokes back of Hardy, Zane Latham of Valley View, TX carded a third place finish.

Snead Flight:    It's been a long time coming, but with the help of some swing tips from his coach, Douglas Pritchett of Fort Worth, TX showed that persistence and patience would pay off. With the ten stroke victory it was Doug's sixth win on tour and first since the 2011 Coyote Ridge Challenge. Back from competing at the Pinehurst Championship, Thomas Rauch of Arlington, TX picked up his sixth runner up on the season to go with two wins, with David Dildy of Plano, TX rounding out the top three.
