Oklahoma Open A LandMark At OakTree

Home Cookin' - Three Winners from Edmond!

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (July 23, 2012)  OakTree Golf and Country Club is a 1,400 acre community north of Edmond, OK developed in 1974 by Ernie Vossler, Joe Walser, JR and Johnny Pott and became the second of many Landmark Land's golf communities.  Oaktree, the home of Landmark's corporate logo is the second of 17 Pete Dye designed golf courses for Landmark that included La Qunita, Mission Hills, PGA West, Palm Beach Polo and Kiawah Island among others.    Landmark would later have to divest it's interest in those top properties but, all have lived up to thier intended purpose and OakTree is no exception.

Beautiful course conditions including fast and firm greens made the par 70 play tough for the visiting players from Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Sweet swinging Ethan Smith from Oklahoma City grabbed the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Labor Finders.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:   Apparent winner Steffen Sloan shot a three over par 73 but his guest status would lead the pair of second place finishers back to the course for a playoff conclusion.  Norman, OK members Jeff Case and Pat Proctor would only take one extra hole where Proctor prevailed for his third win on the year and National Championship Qualification. Jordan Rollins from Keller, TX and Ponca City, OK player Steve Lusk shared the third place honors.

Palmer Flight:  15 year old Ethan Smith from Oklahoma City, OK put on his walking shoes and came away with his second win on the season.  Despite a couple of double bogie's, Smith put a string of birdies together at the ninth through eleventh holes, added one at the par three seventeenth and came away with a five stroke advantage over Adrian DelaGarza from Coppell, TX.  DelaGarza, seemingly always in the hunt this year would par on the final hole to edge out Brook Lister from Tulsa, OK for the second place finish.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Clayton Badger from Drumright, OK birdied the tenth and tough fifteenth to pick up his first win on tour over Fort Worth, TX travler Sean Fenton by a stroke.  Fenton ran into trouble on the signature sixteenth hole but finished with a pair of pars to stay one stroke ahead of a trio tied for the third spot.  Roland Lewis from Tulsa, OK and the Oklahoma City, OK pair of Darren Montgomery and Jimmy Westfall shared the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  In his first event on tour, Edmond, OK local Brandon McCool took the flight top honors.  Despite a triple on his final hole, McCool stayed two strokes clear of Zack Whitlock of Broken Arrow, OK for the win.  Tulsa, OK member Todd Chapman finished three strokes back to round out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  The largest flight of the day, took three players an extra hole to finalize the winner for the second playoff of the event.  Michael Hicks from Edmond, OK would make it official on the first playoff hole over the eastern Oklahoma / Arkansas pair of Rod Haddock from Siloam Springs, AR and Tahlequah, OK member Mike Johnson. It was Hicks' first win on the year and fifth on tour.

Sarazen Flight:  Rounding out the third playoff of the day, David Price from Pawhuska, OK and Dallas Tour member Willie Dozier from Garland, TX needed two extra holes to crown a champion.  On the par four second hole, a messy non par would find Dozier winning the event for his first on the season and third on tour.  Edmond, OK newcomer Tony Miller finished in the show position just two strokes back in his second event on tour.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   Hank Chang of Lawton, OK punched his ticket to the National Championships with his third win on the season. Chang a winner at two early events on the year birded the fifteenth to stay two strokes ahead of McAlester, OK native Loyd Welch. Four strokes back Mark Helms from Broken Bow, OK and North Richland Hills, TX member Jerrell Neely split the third place honors.

Jones Flight:  Edmond, OK local Imran Siddiqi overcame a two stroke penalty on the first hole for playing from the wrong tee for his third win on the season. Brian Glaser from Flower Mound, TX had his best finish on tour by four strokes over another Edmond, OK member Mike Camp rounding out the top three.

Senior Jones Flight:  Paul Vessels from Mesquite, TX grabbed his third win on tour this season and made his National Championship qualification official.  Four players tied in the second spot three strokes back were Ron Hardy from Lewisville, TX, Chris Manahan of Oklahoma City, Fort Worth, TX player Douglas Pritchett and Ron Walker from Crescent, OK.
