Creeks Didn't Rise in Dallas - Classic at the Creek

Scott R Chilcutt,  Carrollton, TX (March 29, 2013)  Indian Creek Golf Club in the flats of Carrollton, TX,  bordering the Elm Fork of the Trinity River has had a history on the Dallas Tour of early spring water.  Some from the sky, like 2013 and some from the flooding in 2012.  This year the course, a premier 36 hole daily fee facility, returned to host the third event of the calendar year on the local tour.  Cool early morning light winds gave way to sun on the over seeded layout and had the ball rolling out to shorten the layout.

The Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving, went to Larry Tolson a Senior Jones member with Senior Palmer, Kem Albritton and Senior Sarazen player, Kirby Rogers just one stroke back.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  First year player Greg Polledri of Southlake, TX seemed a little under dressed for the early morning chill, but got things warmed up with a birdie on the par 5 - 6th hole and played his final fifteen holes in even par to win his first event on tour.  One stroke back, Dallas, TX resident Coy Dobson matched Polledri on the front, but gave up a stroke on the back for his best finish on tour. James Williams of Addison, TX in only his second event,  sprinkled in four birdies on the day to finish two strokes out of the lead.

Palmer Flight:  Brack Blackwood of Granbury, TX lead the field through the first nine holes, but opened the door for Clay Johnston of nearby Lewisville, TX to force extra holes when Johnston went +2 on the back.  Starting on the par 4 - 10th for the sudden death playoff, Johnston made par for his fourth win on tour and first since the 2012 - Denver Tour Championship.  Rowlett, TX player Gregory Haddon birdied the par 5 - 16th and looked to have the championship tied up, but ran into trouble on the next hole to finish one stroke back of the pair rounding out the top three.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Inching closer to ten wins on the tour, Kem Albritton of Garland, TX commanded a six stroke victory.  Albritton went out at one over par with the help of birdies on the par 3 - 5th and par 3 - 8th, came to the clubhouse +3 on the back for his ninth win on tour and second of the points season.  Mark Taylor of Lewisville, TX, a runner up to Albritton at the November Bobcat Open @ Texas Star held on to the second place finish, one stroke clear of first time player, South Africa native, Nic Linde now residing in Keller, TX.

Hogan Flight:  In what appeared to be the second playoff of the day, Navakiran Chitturi of McKinney, TX fell victim to a two stroke penalty on his starting hole to open the door for Midland, TX traveler, Jeff Blackwood, to claim his second win on tour.  Blackwood with three birdies on the day finished two strokes ahead of the pair of Chitturi and first year player Darren Bufton of Bedford, TX, finishing T2 with the help of birdies on the par 5 - 6th and par 3 -14th.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Bob Mulligan of Dallas, TX, playing in his second event, took sixteen strokes off his debut on tour to win his first event.  Mulligan, with birdies on five holes on the day, edged out Trophy Club, TX member Jalil DaneshFar by one stroke.  Three strokes back, the pair of Denver Roden of Irving, TX and Cleburne, TX resident, Michael Starks shared the third place honors.

Sarazen Flight:  Hill Country Tour member, C.D. Dunem of San Antonio, TX made the trip north worthwhile, in many ways, to pick up his third win on Tour and second of the 2014 points season.  Dunem, navigated the unfamiliar layout with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 12th to lead a trio of players, three strokes back. Rockwall, TX member David Hickman,  Jeff Workman of Fort Worth, TX and Bedford, TX resident, George Peddy played their way into sharing the runner up honors.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   With only one blemish on the scorecard, Oklahoma Tour member, Kirby Rogers of Muldrow, OK picked up an unprecedented 25th win over a span of six years on tour and first since the August 2013 Oklahoma Tour Championship.  Two strokes back, Mark Donohue of Lewisville, TX carded his best finish on the points season with Dale McFarland of Crowley, TX rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Larry Tolson of Fairview, TX made it two in a row, following up on his win at the St Patty's Day Challenge @ Lantana, with both wins coming since a promotion to the Senior Jones Flight.  Tolson birdied the par 3 - 5th and par 4 - 7th for a seven stroke advantage over Tom Stockton of Euless, TX. One stroke back of Stockton, local Carrollton, TX member Scott Sears took home the third place honors.

Snead Flight:  Haslet, TX player Doyle Fleming managed his round just well enough for a one stroke victory, his fourth on the points season. New Orleans native, Steve Pearson from Plano, TX carded his best finish on tour, with another Plano resident, Daniel Bohannon taking the third place finish in his first outing on tour.

Dallas Tour at Lantana Golf Club for St Patrick's Day

Scott R Chilcutt, Lantana, TX (March 17, 2014)  When most of the U.S. defaulted to the weekend for St. Patrick's day celebrations, tour players took advantage of the special Monday and took to the links for the St Patty's Day Challenge at Lantana.   Lantana Golf Club, a private golf club and the first on a six event schedule of the Dominion Golf Group properties on the Dallas and Hill Country Tours.

Much needed rains, 1.5"+, Saturday made it a challenge for the staff to prepare the heavily bunker-ed Jay and Carter Morrish layout and did a wonderful job to make it fair and playable.  While the cart path only issues created more work for the players, the soaking of the greens certainly helped soften the scores.   Five first time winners emerged, in the eight flights contested on the day.

Scott Ingerson of Mustang, OK edged out three players tied for second to pick up the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:   Olive Branch, MS traveler Marcus House went one under on the back nine with a birdie on the par 5 - 13th to force extra holes with Dan Dickens of Coppell, TX.  Dickens with three birdies of his own on the day, added another on the first hole of the playoff for his first win on tour. Self promoted from the Palmer Flight, Tyler Jewell of Dallas, TX finished just one stroke back to round out the top three.

Palmer Flight:   Senior Palmer Flight player, Rick Davis of Rockwall, TX won his first event on tour in the combined Senior / Open field. Two strokes back, Greg Hawkins of nearby Argyle, TX grabbed the runner up spot with four strokes to spare over a foursome knotted in the third position.  Mark Anderson of Plano, TX,  Lewisville, TX member Mark Taylor,  David Alan Wood of North Richland HIlls and first time player Greg Digby from Lewisville, shared the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  A pair of first time players, Marshall Koehler of Highland Village, TX and Argyle, TX resident,  Philip Hartley needed an extra hole to finalize the championship.  Both players carded a couple of birdies on the day, while swapping the best nine hole scores, with a par on the first playoff hole, Koehler picked up the win.  Three strokes back, Scott Harper of Ranger, TX added a third place finish to go with his two wins on the points season.

Senior Hogan Flight:   Starting on the 10th hole, John Hilgers of Wimberly, TX birdied the par 4 - 12th, then added two more on the par 4 - 6th and par 5 - 7th to shoot one over on his back nine, to pick up his fourth win on tour and second of the year. Four strokes back, Paul Burleson of Argyle, TX grabbed the runner up finish, with Trophy Club, TX player Jalil DaneshFar in the show position.

Sarazen Flight:  Oklahoma Tour member, Scott Ingerson of Mustang, OK picked up his third win on tour, two of which have come on the Dallas Tour after winning the 2013 - Championship @ TPC Craig Ranch. Starting the day with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st, George Peddy of  Bedford, TX struggled on the back nine but still ended up splitting the runner up finish with Dallas, TX member Melvin Wilson III one stroke out of the lead.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   First year member, James McKee of Abilene, TX managed consistent front and back nine scores to be the fourth first time winner on the day.  Crowley, TX player Dale McFarland finished one stroke back after suffering a two stroke penalty on the back nine.  Kirby Rogers of Muldrow, OK rounded out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Larry Tolson of Fairview, TX birdied the par 3 -8th en route to his fifth win on tour. Two strokes back,  Scott Sears of Carrollton, TX birdied the par 3 - 15th to share the runner up honors with North Richland Hills, TX member Luis Dayer, a winner twice on tour since his promotion from the Snead Flight.

Snead Flight:    Thomas Rauch of Arlington, TX made it the fifth first time winner on tour with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 8th.  Seven strokes back,  three time winner on the year and 2014 Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay Major Champion, Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX finished second. Cedar Hill, TX first year member Peter Trotter added his second third place finish to his three events on tour.

Grand Prairie Classic - Kicks off the 2014 Dallas Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Grand Prairie, TX (February 22, 2014)  Tangle Ridge Golf Club, home to the past several years season opener on the Dallas Tour schedule, has a Hill Country feel to the south Metroplex layout.  Unlike the wet adventures of the previous years, fore casted highs in the 70's along with light winds never materialized.  Cool and strong consistent winds out of the south made for a long and challenging day.

While most would have believed the #1 handicap hole, the long into the wind par 5 - 8th to play the toughest, it actually took a back seat to the signature par 4 - 14th, yielding only one birdie on the day at 2.12 strokes over par.  The 8th, played 1.97 over par with the #2 handicap, par 5 - 5th coming in just behind at 1.44 over.

Anthony Dayer of Colleyville, TX edged out Lewisville, TX member Shawn Whitaker by one stroke for the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Dallas, TX member Tony Peppler carded three strategic birdies on the day, including the tough par 5 - 8th for a two stroke victory.  The win was Peppler's fourth on tour, including the 2012 Pacific Northwest Major Championship at Chambers Bay, against the largest field yet.   Jared Taylor of Edmond, OK, a first time player, birdied the par 4 - 2nd and 3rd holes to go two under after six ending his day in a tie for the second spot with Terry Rice of Midland, TX.

Senior Championship Flight:  Cheyenne, WY native Larry Vannatta now residing nearby in Grand Prairie, TX picked up his first win on tour.   Birdies on the par 4 - 3rd, par 4 - 10th and par 4 - 15th led Vannatta to a six stroke advantage over a pair knotted in the runner up spot.  Kyle Lewie of Waco, TX and Keller, TX player Ken Dyke, both coming off of previous weekend rounds on the Hill Country Tour for the  Kerrville Championship at Comanche Trace shared the second place finish.

Palmer Flight:   Two strokes back with four holes to play, Tyler Jewell of Dallas, TX, finished off with four consecutive birdies for his first win on tour.  Two strokes shy,  Rowlett, TX member Gregory Haddon certainly didn't give it away, finishing with four pars of his own, but just couldn't hold off the birdie barrage from Jewell.  Craig Parr of Gilmer, TX in his second event on tour carded four birdies on the day to round out the top three.

Hogan Flight  Shawn Whitaker of Lewisville, TX got over starting on the tough, into the wind par 5 - 8th hole in the shotgun format to grab his sixth win on tour and first since the 2011 Las Colinas Championship.  Five strokes back, Ranger, TX resident Scott Harper used birdies on the par 5 -5th (one of only two on the day) and par 3 - 9th to add a runner up finish to his two wins on the 2014 points season.  Chad Maynard of Frisco, TX finished in the show position two strokes back of Harper.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Trophy Club, TX member Jalil DaneshFar found himself collecting his seventh champion trophy. Starting on the tenth hole, DaneshFar played his first four holes in even par en route to a one stroke victory over traveling Oklahoma Tour member, Tim Mathis of Edmond.  Three stokes back, Paul Burleson of Argyle and Sanger, TX player Steve Killion split the third place honors.

Sarazen Flight:  Preston Miller of Fort Worth, TX makes it two in as many attempts. After starting his first four years without a win, Miller is on roll.  Carding a birdie on the par 3 - #12,  his first hole of the shotgun start, Miller went on to win by four strokes over, Scott Lane of Plano, TX and Rockwall, TX member David Hickman splitting the runner up position.  Nick Easen apparently in the money, DQ'd himself for signing an incorrect scorecard.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Spending most of the winter under snow, Oklahoma Tour member, Gary Schuessler of Wichita, KS, returned to Tangle Ridge after a T-3 at the 2013 Grand Prairie Classic for his third win on tour and second of the points season.  One stroke back, Mike Frenzel of Arlington, TX recorded the runner up finish with Haslet, TX member Burnie Rodgers finishing in the show position.

Jones Flight:  Luis Dayer of North Richland Hills, TX became another repeat winner on the day for his second on the year and fourth on tour. Dion Casto of  Parker, TX took the second place finish with a trio tied up in the third place finish.  Ron Hardy of Lewisville, TX,  Richardson, TX member Bolaji Harris and Zane Latham of Valley View, TX split the third place honors.

Snead Flight:  Second in the father / son duo to win on the day, Anthony Dayer of Colleyville, TX picked up his first win on tour.  Playing in his first event on tour, Wylie, TX resident Ethan Blase finished eight strokes back, with Jimmy Kim collecting third place points with the help of two birdies on the day.

Senior Snead Flight:  Birdie on the second hole of the day, the par 5 - 18th,  paved the way for Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX to win his twelfth event on tour and second of the year.  Local, Arlington, TX member Thomas Rauch finished in the second place position with new members, Sandye Conner of Arlington, TX and Cedar Hill, TX resident Peter Trotter sharing the third place finish.

Champions Warmed with Win - Champion Circle

Scott R Chilcutt, Fort Worth, TX (November 23, 2013)   On a day, more suitable to fireside football chatter, 64 players made the call for the Fall Championship on the Dallas Tour.  A mid 30 degree morning with drizzle and north winds blew through after heavy rains on Friday, challenging even the most hearty.

In the seven flights contested, three first time winners matched up with an additional three winning for the first time in newly promoted flights, left only a multiple flight champion in the Championship flight. Leo Washington, one of those newly crowned champions also took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Highland Village, TX member John Bohling took advantage of birdies on the par 3 - 5th and par 4 - 16th for his third win on tour.  Winner in his last outing at the Bobcat Open @ Texas Star, Andrew Braun of Trophy Club, TX birdied his first and last holes of the day to fall one stroke short of back to back wins.  Tim Williams of McKinney, TX and Keller, TX player Guy Nickels shared the third place honors three strokes out of the lead.

Palmer Flight:  Greg Hawkins of Argyle, TX finally broke into the Palmer Flight winners circle after winning four as a Hogan player, for his fifth win on tour.  Hawkins played the back nine in +2, and was enough for a three stroke victory over Haslet, TX resident Ryan Ramos. Tyler Jewell of Dallas, playing in his first event on tour, rounded out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Sapulpla, OK player Tams Howard played in a previous Oklahoma Tour event as a guest, received his membership credentials shortly after as a birthday present and parlayed that gift into a win, his first time out. Houston Tour traveler, Gus Aldana started out with four consecutive pars after beginning play on the sixteenth hole, gave back his three stroke lead on the par 4 - 2nd and then swapped the lead with Howard the rest of the round to finish one stroke back after a double on his final hole. Rockwall, TX member Joe Roy had his best finish as a recently promoted Hogan Flight player finishing just two stokes out of the lead.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Playing out of nearby Haslet, TX, Phillip Holt commanded his first victory on tour.  Holt's previous best finish, T2 at the April Flower Mound Open @ Bridlewood, birdied the par 4 - 9th for a six stroke advantage over runner up Jalil DaneshFar of Trophy Club, TX.  Denver Roden of Irving, TX finished in the show position, four strokes back of second.

Sarazen Flight:  Preston Miller of Fort Worth, TX made his 49th round on the AM Tour count for his first career win. Runner up finishes over the years on tour have got him close, but he just hasn't been able to finish it off when it counted until today.  Starting on the 12th hole, Miller played a rocky stretch, but a birdie on the par 5 - 18th seemed to right the ship, playing the front nine in +5 for a one stroke victory over Ronald Spencer, also of Fort Worth.  Nick Easen of Keller, TX and Arlington, TX member Mike Frenzel shared the third place finish.

Jones Flight:  North Richland Hills, TX player Luis Dayer picked up his third win on tour and first as a Jones Flight player.  Dayer, promoted to the Jones Flight in early September, held on to a four stroke advantage over runner up finisher Ray Hund of Plano, TX.  Despite taking an eleven on the short par 4 - 4th,  Dion Casto of Parker, TX played well enough over the remainder of his round to take home the third place finish.

Snead Flight:     Leo Washington of Watauga, TX became the third first time winner on the day by six strokes over  Doyle Fleming of neighboring Haslet, TX.  Fleming, not out of the top three in four events on the 2014 schedule,  used a birdie on the par 4 - 8th to edge out first time player Daniel Payne of Fort Worth, TX by a single stroke.
