Tricky Day @ Thorntree Country Club

Scott R Chilcutt,  Desoto, TX (July 1, 2018)  Thorntree Country Club, just south of Dallas proper in Desoto hosted its first event on the Golf Channel AM Tour on the DFW schedule.  Rated one of the toughest golf courses in the DFW area, many years running by the Dallas Business Journal, the facility, held up to that acclaim.

Tricky, blind tee shots, hard and fast fairways, end excellent green complexes, put a premium on practice rounds and course knowledge.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $620, with Texas Tour events total raised to $16,620 contributed to the Foundation in 2018.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  While not able to play a complete practice round after only playing some of the front nine, one of the players to take advantage of seeing some of the course, Nick Quast of Dallas, TX, made it look simple.  Quast with four birdies on his round, three coming on the front nine, card - 70 for his fifth win of the season.  Fort Worth, TX, player Mike Rogers, with two birdies of his own, carded his best finish in his first finish on tour, in the runner-up spot, with Mason Hill of Dallas, TX, making the most of four birdies on his day to round out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Coming off an under par performance his last time out at Harbor Lakes,  Dallas, TX, player Drue Thompson, took seven strokes off his back nine to win for his second time in as many attempts. First-time player Jon Aronson of Dallas, TX, carded a birdie on the 5 - 4th for the runner-up finish, three strokes clear of Ranger, TX, player Scott Harper in third.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Bedford, TX, resident Keith Johnson, with some obvious course knowledge, recorded three birdies on the round to finish at +1 - 73 for his fourth win of the season.  Three strokes back, Gabe Brisco of Mesquite, TX, made the most of two birdies on his day to finish, seven strokes clear of third-place finisher, Mark Taylor of Coppell, TX.

Hogan Flight:  Starting the day on the par 4 - 1st, Traveling Houston, TX, player John Harcrow, finished his final five holes in -2 on two birdies to pick up his National Championship qualifying third win of the year.  Three strokes back, in the runner-up, finish, with two birdies on his day, Rick Houchins of Las Colinas, TX, finished just one stroke clear of a hard-charging Southlake, TX, Todd Winch, finishing his back nine in +2.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Each with a pair of birdies on the day, Fairview, TX, resident Glynn Aldredge and Dave Hanson of Granbury, TX, finished regulation tied up.  Back to the par 4 - 1st, the duo would match pars on the first, and would take the par 3 - 2nd, to settle the score.  Hanson would prevail for his seventh win on tour and second of the season.  For Aldredge, it was his fourth runner-up finish of the season to go along with a win in March.  Three strokes back, Houston Tour member, Jeff Green of Coldsprings, TX, would birdie the par 4 - 18th to round out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Preston Moxcey of Dallas, TX, recently qualified for the National Championship with a third-place finish at the Horseshoe Bay Major Championship, added another qualifying method to his year, pick up his third win.  Two strokes back, Frank Orozco of Dallas, TX, and Olalla, WA player Anthony Fisher split the runner-up finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Playing in his second event of the weekend, after a Saturday trip to Ardmore, OK, Rodney Wren of Dallas, TX, made the second one count.  Wren, with a birdie on the par 5 - 9th, grabbed his fourth win of the season, two strokes clear of a pair knotted up in second.  Weatherford, TX, member Andre Fitzpatrick, another Saturday participant, with a birdie on the par 5 - 10th and Vance Lakey of Hamlin, TX, with a birdie of his own on the par 4 - 1st split the runner-up honors.

Jones Flight:  Making the trip up I-45, Neil MacDonald of Huntsville, TX, made the most of a birdie on the par 3 - 16th to pick up his first win of the season.  Two strokes back, Dallas, TX, member Mike Lee, with a birdie on the par 4 - 11th, took home the second place prizes, with Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX, rounding out the top three.

Senior Snead Flight: Fort Worth, TX, player Keith Huddleston, off a runner-up, finish the weekend before at the Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay, picked up his second win in his last four attempts.  Ron Hardy of Lewisville, TX, carded his seventh-second place finish of the season, to go along with three wins, three strokes clear of Zane Latham, of Valley View, TX, taking home the third-place finish.
