Casper Challenge @ Bear Creek - Recap

Scott R Chilcutt, DFW Airport (June 26, 2011)  Bear Creek Golf Club, virtually on the grounds of DFW International Airport,  just to the southwest of runways 18L and 18R, was host to the Casper Challenge at Bear Creek on this HOT/Windy Sunday in June.

Just on the edge of the Texas Drought Conditions of 2011, the real indications of that shortage were found on the edge of the fairways where very little rough could be found and it made for some great scoring for players that could keep it between the trees. Unlike DFW's open expanse of over 18,000 acres, Bear Creek is cut into a heavily wooded area, but like DFW the wind blows with a vengeance.  Gusts in excess of 30 MPG swirl through the trees and despite some of the scoring, the challenge was real.

Justin Lee edged out Barry Gray for the Tournament Champion Trophy with Nick Quast two strokes back.

Next Up -  Dallas Tour Next up, the Dallas Tour heads to exclusive Las Colinas Country Club for the Las Colinas Championship on Monday, July 11th and The Oklahoma Tour resumes play on July 9th at the Clary Fields Classic .   Registration for both events close on July 1.

Results:

Championship Flight:  29 year old Nick Quast from Grapevine is now a perfect two for two on the Golf Channel Am Tour.  Quast followed up his even par 72 at his inaugural April 23rd Tribute Open appearance with a 1 under par 71 at Bear Creek.  Southlake's, Justin Lee looked to have things under control after an opening birdie, playing the first 5 in even par but then hit a wall with a quad on the par 4 - 6th hole.  Bouncing back with flawless golf after that stumble, Lee went two under over the last 12 holes to finish with a 74, one stroke ahead of Steve Brewster of Trophy Club.

Palmer Flight:  Lake Worth, TX player, John Anderson picked up his first win as a Palmer Flight player and first of the year.  Anderson picked up his last of 4 wins on tour as a Sarazen Flight player in July, 2010.  John birdied the first hole and finished with an up and down scorecard, pacing 2nd place finisher Brack Blackwood of Grandbury by three strokes.  Visiting 19 year old Cort Marinan from Saint Augustine, FL finished one stroke back of Blackwood to round out the top three.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Mansfield, TX, Michael Fee grabbed his 2nd win on tour by going even par after 12 holes.  From 13 on it appeared that Fee may have succumbed to the heat, but wouldn't blow his big lead over T2 players Bill McConnell from Norman, OK and Irving, TX Robert Felix.   In the clubhouse with an edge over McConnell and Felix apparent 2nd place finisher Jim Cochran from Dallas would confirm that he finished the round with the wrong ball and disqualify himself.

Hogan Flight:  In the first of three playoffs on the day, new tour player Todd Daniels from Arlington picked up his first win in as many tries in a sudden death with Rockwall, TX Paul Gray.  Gray another apparent victim of the tough dogleg left, 5th hole would have to retrieve his clubs for the playoff but couldn't out shoot Daniels.  Gregory Stairs from Mansfield would birdie the par 4 - 18th to take the 4th spot over another new member, Carrollton's Greg Sheppard by one stroke.

Sarazen Flight:  Outscoring 16 members in the largest flight of the day, Nancy Geihl from Grand Prairie, TX rounded up her 2nd win on tour and her 2nd win in a row over Caleb Brown from Lewisville and Ranger, TX, Scott Harper by one stroke.  Geihl made it interesting for Brown and Harper already in the clubhouse by her double bogey, 6 on the 18th hole but had built enough of an advantage to grab the hardware. Rockwall, TX Joseph Roy would finish 4th with Daniel Whitehead from Prosper, TX taking the 5th place prize in a scorecard playoff over Dave Ducray.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Barry Gray from Lantana, TX  cruised to his 5th win of the year by four strokes over Fort Worth, TX, Jimmy BoehmSteve Killion from Sanger, TX and Richland Hills member, Jerrell Neely knot up the 3rd spot with Oklahoma member, Stan Wilson from Jones rounding out the top 5.

Jones Flight:  Laughing in the club house about a potential playoff, Loyd Welch from McAlester, OK and traveler from Waldrof, MD, Washington DC Tour player Rick Houchins were negotiating the trophy and gift cards.  Houchins wanted the trophy, Welch wanted the gift cards.   When the committee sent them to the first tee for the 2nd of 3 playoffs of the day, Houchins would bring to the committees attention that he had played from the wrong teeing ground during the day and disqualified himself.  Although the notice to contestants, along with his score card showed the correct tees for the flight, the course setup was very confusing.  Jones flight went off a modified RED TEE and the Hogan and Sarazen Flights went off the WHITE tees.  Add to the confusion, Houchins was paired with Senior Sarazen players in the pairings.  In the end, the two agreed to playoff for the trophy and Houchins would take it in the 2nd playoff hole, while Welch took home the gift cards and points.  In his 2nd Dallas Tour event, Lee Isham from the Houston Tour would take home the 2nd place prizing as a result of a disqualification.

Senior Jones Flight:  Ken Benjamin from Grand Prararie, TX would par the final two holes while Lewisville, TX player Ron Hardy would take a 9 on the 18th to end up in the 3rd playoff of the day.  Benjamin would birdie the first hole in the playoff to take his first win on tour.  Ever steady Burnie Rodgers from Haslet would grab the 3rd spot just two strokes back.

Snead Flight:   Fresh off a runner up finish and National Championship qualification at the Western Open at TPC Scottsdale, Arlington, TX Don Freitag wrangled his first win on the tour by two strokes over Douglas Pritchett from Fort Worth.  Pritchett would finish the last five holes in one over par but could make up ground he lost on the 6th-9th holes.  Lale Esquivel from Frisco rounded up the top three.
