Casper Challenge @ Bear Creek - Recap

Scott R Chilcutt, DFW Airport (June 26, 2011)  Bear Creek Golf Club, virtually on the grounds of DFW International Airport,  just to the southwest of runways 18L and 18R, was host to the Casper Challenge at Bear Creek on this HOT/Windy Sunday in June.

Just on the edge of the Texas Drought Conditions of 2011, the real indications of that shortage were found on the edge of the fairways where very little rough could be found and it made for some great scoring for players that could keep it between the trees. Unlike DFW's open expanse of over 18,000 acres, Bear Creek is cut into a heavily wooded area, but like DFW the wind blows with a vengeance.  Gusts in excess of 30 MPG swirl through the trees and despite some of the scoring, the challenge was real.

Justin Lee edged out Barry Gray for the Tournament Champion Trophy with Nick Quast two strokes back.

Next Up -  Dallas Tour Next up, the Dallas Tour heads to exclusive Las Colinas Country Club for the Las Colinas Championship on Monday, July 11th and The Oklahoma Tour resumes play on July 9th at the Clary Fields Classic .   Registration for both events close on July 1.

Gates Wins in Oklahoma - Freitag Takes Runner Up Spot at Western Open

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (June 14, 2011) A brief period of thunder, lightning and 14" rain (14" between drops)  would bring the field to a halt, but would not dampen the action on Saturday at the Shawnee Classic.

For the 2nd Oklahoma tournament in a row a traveling Dallas tour member took home the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Labor Finders.  Ricky Gates from Arlington, TX bested the field in the net contest by two strokes over Roland Lewis and Mike Johnson.

Sarazen Flight:  Ricky Gates from Arlington, TX took home his 4th win of the season but only first win since graduating to the Sarazen flight, by  five strokes over 3 players tied for 2nd.  In the three way scorecard playoff, Alan Barnett of Cheyenne, OK finished with 2nd place prize, Lawton's Jeff Banner received the third place gift card and Jamie Sansom from Frisco, TX would share the points.

Jones Flight:  Burneyville's, Shug Shugart took home his second trophy of the year by three strokes over Burnie Rodgers of Haslet, TX and Van Buren, AR Jay Williams. Rodgers finally prevailed in a scorecard playoff for 2nd place prizing.

Western Open action at TPC Scottsdale punched the National Championship Qualification ticket for Don Freitag with his 2nd place finish.

Snead Flight:  Don Risner of Bakersfield, CA holed out for an incredible eagle on his final hole, the par-four 9th, to win the Snead Flight by a full four strokes. Don Freitag of Arlington, TX finished in 2nd place, while Daniel Wu claimed third.

Cunningham Wins @ Texas Master - Three More Qualify for Nationals

Dallas PLAYERS at the Texas Masters

Scott R Chilcutt, San Antonio, TX (June 5, 2011)  The final round of the Am Tour's Texas Masters at TPC San Antonio concluded today on the AT&T Canyons course in dramatic fashion as four Dallas Players solidify Championship qualifications.

Hogan Flight:  Brook Lister, a Tulsa, OK resident, needed extra holes to bring home the title besting Tim Williams from McKinney, TX in a playoff after the two were locked in a dead heat at 167 after two days of play.

Jones Flight:  Lewisville, TX, Shawn Whitaker hung on to a finish in a three way tie for third punching his ticket to the Nationals.

Senior Jones Flight:  It proved to be a two horse race as Michael Grant (Snoqualmie, WA) and Ron Hardy (Lewisville, TX) distanced themselves from the field.  It ended in a classic duel, ultimately won by Grant in a playoff.

Snead Flight:  Overnight leader Kevin Cunningham of Little Elm, TX shot a 95 and fought off red hot Scott Bundrick to win the championship.  Cunningham’s total of 189 proved just one better than Bundrick’s 190 whose two-day total was bolstered by an impressive flight-best final round 91.
