Championship TPC Craig Ranch

Scott R Chilcutt, McKinney, TX (July 17, 2017)  A staple of the DFW Tour since 2011, with sellouts every year since 2012, TPC Craig Ranch, sits In the middle of the Craig Ranch area of McKinney, TX.   With the past three weeks running of weather delays in North Texas, it was nice to get full round in under hot, partly cloudy skies.  Great course conditions, receptive quick greens, and little wind helped put some low scores on the board.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $550, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $14,340 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Grouped in the same pairing with both Championship Flight National and Senior National Champions in 2016, Andrew Braun of Trophy Club, TX, upped his game.  Braun would card three birdies on his round that would eliminate a double and bogie to finish even par for his third win of the season.  Three strokes back, Plano, TX, player Gant Bills, made eagle on the par 5 - 9th, added two birdies coming to the clubhouse for the runner-up finish, with Jack Carlile, of Lewisville, TX, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Murphy, TX, player Dallas Webster and Kyle Sandlin of Rockwall, TX, matched scores making the turn, one stroke out of the lead, with Webster taking the top spot to the eighteenth tee.   Sandlin would then make eagle three on the par 5 - 18th to knot up the score once again, forcing extra holes.  Back out to the par 4 - 10th for the sudden death it would only take one hole when Webster made birdie to pick up his second win of the season.  For Sandlin, a first-year player it was his best finish on tour.  One stroke back, the leader making the turn, Kirk Boerner of Fort Worth, TX, rounded out the top three.

Senior Palmer Flight:  David Lake of Irving, TX,  carded two birdies on the round to pick up his first win on tour.  Four strokes back, the trio of Michael Fyfe of McKinney, TX, with one birdie on the day Trophy Club, TX, member Jalil Daneshfar with two birdies on his round and traveling Catoosa, TX, player Michael Foster, with a birdie of his own, split the runner-up finish.

Hogan Flight:  Three strokes out of the lead making the turn, Frisco, TX, player Deon Barber, put together an even par on the back nine with the help of three birdies to pick up his third win on tour, all coming within his last four events.  One stroke back, Aldofo Perez of Rowlett, TX, a two-time winner on the season, finished in the runner-up spot.  Plano, TX, resident Mark Anderson kept a streak alive, with all top three finishes on the season, birdied his first hole out of the gate to take the final podium spot.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Starting the day on the par 4 - 10th, Ken Johnson of Carrollton, TX, struggled on his front nine, making the turn with a five stroke deficit.  Johnson would then get things on track finishing his final five holes -2, with two birdies to make up the difference for a one stroke victory, his fifth of the season.  Oklahoma Tour traveler, Kirby Rogers of Muldrow, OK grabbed the second place finish with Cleburne, TX, player Michael Starks rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Atlanta Tour visitor, Jeffeory White of Dalton, GA, picked up his second win of the season and sixth on tour.  One stroke back Seagoville, TX, player Mitch Ryan, with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st and Frisco, TX, member Jason Shuffield, with two birdies on his round shared the runner-up finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Taking to the course on the tenth hole, Bullard, TX, member Bill Clark, made the turn two strokes out of the championship behind, Tom Stockton of Grand Prairie, TX.  With a birdie on the par 4-6th, Clark made up the difference grid locking the pair and forcing extra playoff holes.  Before going back to the course in the heat for the sudden death, players were kidding the pair about it being an eighteen hole playoff.  It looked like that could happen, but after four extra holes, Stockton succumbed to that heat, handing Clark the Championship, for his second win of the season.  Idabel, OK member Mark Helms rounded out the top three, one stroke back.

Jones Flight:  Coming off a win on Saturday in The Hill Country, Judy Harris of Abilene, TX, made it three for the season and second in as many attempts.  With a birdie on the par 5 - 12th hole, Dallas, TX, player David Farmer, JR finished in the second place spot, with Scott Sears of Carrollton, TX, taking third.

Snead Flight:  Jason Jenniges of Weatherford, TX, made birdie on his ninth hole of the day, the par 5 - 18th that proved to be just enough for his second win of the season and fourth on tour.  One stroke back, the pair of Zane Latham of Valley View, TX, and Fort Worth, TX, member Douglas Pritchett, shared the runner-up honors.

Rain Ridge - Grand Prairie Classic

Scott R Chilcutt, Grand Prairie, TX (July 1, 2017)  Tangle Ridge Golf Club, aka Rain Ridge, home of the Grand Prairie Classic over the years, has been known to get players wet and the 2017 edition was no different.

100 of 105 players slated to make the start traversed through the DFW area, where heavy storms surrounded the Grand Prairie area to find it dry at the course, for a while that is.  With nearly one hour of times on the course, a deluge of rain hit the players, when we got the players off the course, for playability reasons.  With a few stragglers trying to squeak out another hole or two, a lightning bolt near the #7 tee scattered those to the safety of the clubhouse.

Fast forward, 2 1/2 hours, when a final survey of the grounds conditions showed the course to be playable, members took back to the Championship Course and playable it was.  While soft and sloppy conditions might have hampered some, some record low rounds were turned in under clear, relatively cool skies.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $470, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $13,170 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  With four birdies in six holes, before the rains hit, Nick Quast of Trophy Club, TX, resumed his round after the delay with a bogie, giving some hope to the rest of the field, but then steady play finishing his final eleven -1, left him with a -4 - 68 for his sixth win in as many attempts.  Granbury, TX, member Eric Anderson, put a couple of birdies together on the back nine, to finish the side -1, for the runner-up spot.  Anderson a winner his last time out at nearby Tierra Verde, held off first-time player Brannon McCabe also of Granbury, TX, by a single stroke, after McCabe, poured in five birdies on the round.

Senior Championship Flight:  Scheduled to go off at the tail end of the tee times, the Senior Championship Flight, had to endure the delay, but didn't have the start and stop some of the other flights saw.  Trophy Club, TX, member Andrew Braun, went on a birdie string with three in a row, during his first nine holes, added another two on his back, to finish -3.  Local Grand Prairie, TX, player Larry Vannatta made the turn with a one stroke lead but could only muster an even par back nine and fell short by one stroke for his best finish since a runner-up spot at the March Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay Major Championship.  Mark Echols of Diana, TX, and Lewisville, TX, resident, Jack Carlile, shared the third place honors.

Palmer Flight:  Michael Barr of Lewisville, TX, made the turn with a two-stroke lead, and thought it let the Championship slip away on the back nine.  First time Crowley, TX, player Ricky Neiman, made a charge picking up two strokes, with the help of two birdies on the back nine, but fell just one stroke short.  For Barr, it was his second win in as many attempts and third of the season.  Dallas Webster of Murphy, TX,  got to within one stroke of Neiman, with two birdies on his back nine, including the par 5 - 18th to finish in the final podium spot.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Playing in his third event on tour, local Grand Prairie, TX, player Jeff Baurys carded a personal best low round, -2 with the help of three birdies on his day to pick up his first Championship.  Four strokes back, Ken Dyke, of Keller, TX, starting the day on the par 4 - 10th,  was -2 after his first ten holes, but ran into a few troubles on his back nine to grab the runner-up spot.  Fort Worth, TX, member Scott Harris, with his share of issues on his first nine holes, charged back with a -1 back nine with two birdies to round out the top three.

Hogan Flight:   Joseph Roy of Rockwall, TX, picked up his second win of the points season and first since the November Dallas Fall Championship. Two birdies on the round, proved to be just enough for Roy to finish two strokes clear of Richardson, TX, member Sven Bock.   Bock, with two birdies of his own, including his final hole of the day, the par 5 - 18th, for his sixth runner-up finish, to go with three wins on the points season.  Two strokes back of the second place finish, Deon Barber of Frisco, TX, with a birdie on the par 3 -17th shared the third place finish with Aaron Sisk of Fort Worth, TX, with three birdies on his round.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Starting the round on the tenth, Fort Worth, TX, player Jeff Gandy was one stroke back making the turn, then strung together another four pars for nine in a row to pick up his second win on tour, both coming in the 2017 season.  One stroke back, Jerry Emmons of Granbury, TX, and Dallas, TX, resident Rick Allaire, both carding a birdie on their rounds, split the runner-up honors.

Sarazen Flight:  Nancy Geihl, of Grand Prairie, TX, a regular at Tangle Ridge, recorded her National Championship qualifying third win of the season and eighth on tour.  Two strokes ahead making the turn, Keller, TX, player Nick Easen, with two birdies on the front nine, couldn't keep up with Geihl on the back nine, to settle for second place.  Two strokes out of second, Scott Striegel, of Southlake, TX, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 11th took home the final podium finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Frisco, TX, player Jon Neff, continued on his winning ways, picking up his second Championship in as many attempts.  Neff with two birdies on the round, stayed two strokes ahead of a pair knotted in the runner-up spot.  Dale McFarland, of Crowley, TX, with two birdies of his own and Sanger, TX, member Steve Killion with a birdie on the par 4 - 11th, split the second place finish.

Jones Flight:  Second-year tour player Tim Davis from Yukon, OK has put together an impressive list of event in search of his first win.  Davis, an Oklahoma Tour player has competed in 34 events, including 8 Major Championships all over the country before making his first stop on the Dallas Tour.  starting the day on the tenth hole, Davis sailed through his front nine making the turn with a six stroke lead, that would allow him to sail through the back nine for his first win on Tour.  Two strokes back, fellow Oklahoma Tour member, Ralph Justiz of Edmond, OK made a run at Davis on his back nine with a birdie on the par 4 - 6th but settled for his second runner-up finish to go with three wins of the season.  A four-time winner on the season, including the Major Championship at the National Preview,  Houston Tour traveler, Rick Halprin of Houston, TX, helped keep out any locals from the top three spots, finishing in third.

Snead Flight:  Zane Latham of Valley View, TX,  birdied his ninth hole of the day, the par 5 - 18th, to card his third Championship of the points season, including the Major in June at the Hall of Fame Championship in Florida.  Seven strokes back, the trio of Lewisville, TX, member Ron Hardy, Douglas Pritchett of Fort Worth, TX, and Waco, TX, member James Castellano split the runner-up honors.

No Rain at Tierra Verde - Arlington Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Arlington, TX (June 4, 2017)  Back another certified Audubon Signature Sanctuary course on the Texas Tours.   Tierra Verde, one of eight on the 2017 schedule in the state is owned and operated by the City of Arlington, and was the first municipal golf course in the world to be certified.

With the weather forecasted for Sunday, it was very questionable if the event would be held at all, but low and behold the storms held off until we loaded the trailer after all the awards were disbursed.  The weather leading up the event, with torrential rains, made this go round of the Arlington Championship more challenging in some ways, but certainly easier in others.  Cart paths only, led to a lot of walking, but take all the bunkers out of play because they were washed out and filled with water, gave some needed relief.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $580, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $11,290 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Granbury, TX, player Eric Anderson started the day hot, with birdies on his two opening holes.  Anderson went on to add three more on the round, finishing with an even-par 72 for his fifth win on Tour and first since the 2015 season.  Eric Bugg of Ovilla, TX, finished one stroke back with two birdies starting the back nine, with Plano, TX, member Preston Standley, and two birdies of his own, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  John Padilla of Fort Worth, TX, starting on the back nine, played his first nine holes in even par, just enough to pickup up his second win on tour and first of the season.  Padilla with two birdies on his round cleared Fort Worth, TX, member Kirk Boerner, newly promoted to the Palmer Flight, by two strokes.  Boerner matched Michael Barr of Lewisville, TX, with a birdie on their first hole of the day, the par 4 - 10th to finish one stroke ahead of Barr.

Senior Palmer Flight:  South Africa Native, Nic Linde now residing in Keller, TX, has become accustomed to winning, picking up his Senior National Championship qualifying third win on the Tour all coming this season.  Linde, turned a two-stroke deficit after nine holes, into a three-stroke win after posting -2 - 34 on the back nine with three birdies.  Oklahoma Tour traveler, Michael Foster of Catoosa, OK, recorded his fourth runner-up finish in eight attempts on Tour, in his first season of play.  Rounding out the top three, partners in crime, Keller, TX, member Ken Dyke and Sean Fenton of Fort Worth, TX, shared the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Irving, TX, resident Ryan Sosnowski, picked up his second win, in his first year on tour, with the help of two birdies on the day.  Also playing in his first year on tour, Aaron Sisk of Fort Worth, TX, finished two strokes back for his second runner-up finish in five attempts.   Two-time winner of the season, Richardson, TX player Sven Bock, finished three strokes out of the win, with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Bob Mulligan, of Dallas, TX, became a four-time winner on Tour, with two coming in the 2017 points season.  Back two strokes making the turn, Mulligan carded two birdies coming to the clubhouse for a one-stroke victory over traveling Gulf Coast Tour player Mark Wiley of Florence, MS.  Wiley, thought to have the championship tied up going to the 18th hole, ran into trouble on the final frame, but still finished one stroke clear of Drew Keith of Dallas, TX, in third place.

Sarazen Flight:   Starting the day on the tenth hole, Rockwall, TX, resident David Hickman, carded birdies on two of his first four holes, to take a one-stroke lead to the back.  That lead grew after eighteen holes were completed, giving Hickman his seventh win on Tour and first since the 2015 season.  Three strokes back, Alexus Clary of Sunnyvale, TX,  played her back nine, two strokes better than the front to clear a pair of players tied for third place by one stroke.  Ennis, TX, player Justyn Wilder, off the tour since, 2011 and Nick Eason of Keller, TX, split the third place honors.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  On Tour since 2009 and before, lefty, Bill Clark of Bullard, TX,  stood on the podium for his first time this season.  For Clark, starting out on the San Antonio / Austin Tour, now known as the Hill Country Tour, shifting to Oklahoma and now a member of the Dallas Tour Clark has amassed twelve wins.  One stroke back, runner-up went to, Haslet, TX, resident Doyle Fleming, to go along with his three wins on the season,  One stroke back of Fleming, Jim Wright of Azle, TX, carded three birdies on the day to record his best finish of the year.

Jones Flight:  Down three strokes making the turn after starting the day on the par 4 - 10th, Jeff Ackerman, SR of Wylie, TX, picked up the Championship but not until the final hole.  Dallas, TX, player Ronald Occenad looked to have things sewn up when a triple on the par 4-9th left him one out of the lead.  For Ackerman, SR, it is his fifth win of the season and sixth on tour.  Occenad a winner his last time out, in his first season on Tour, finished three strokes clear of Scott Sears of Carrollton, TX rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Jason Jenniges, of Weatherford, TX, carded a birdie on the par 5 - 8th to pick up his third win on Tour and first win since the 2015 season.  Houston Tour traveler, Mike Lane of Katy, TX, with a birdie of his own on the par 4 -17th finished in the runner-up spot, with Arlington, TX, member, Don Freitag and Major Champion during the National Preview at Mission Hills, his last time out taking the show place finish.
