No Rain at Tierra Verde - Arlington Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Arlington, TX (June 4, 2017)  Back another certified Audubon Signature Sanctuary course on the Texas Tours.   Tierra Verde, one of eight on the 2017 schedule in the state is owned and operated by the City of Arlington, and was the first municipal golf course in the world to be certified.

With the weather forecasted for Sunday, it was very questionable if the event would be held at all, but low and behold the storms held off until we loaded the trailer after all the awards were disbursed.  The weather leading up the event, with torrential rains, made this go round of the Arlington Championship more challenging in some ways, but certainly easier in others.  Cart paths only, led to a lot of walking, but take all the bunkers out of play because they were washed out and filled with water, gave some needed relief.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $580, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $11,290 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Granbury, TX, player Eric Anderson started the day hot, with birdies on his two opening holes.  Anderson went on to add three more on the round, finishing with an even-par 72 for his fifth win on Tour and first since the 2015 season.  Eric Bugg of Ovilla, TX, finished one stroke back with two birdies starting the back nine, with Plano, TX, member Preston Standley, and two birdies of his own, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  John Padilla of Fort Worth, TX, starting on the back nine, played his first nine holes in even par, just enough to pickup up his second win on tour and first of the season.  Padilla with two birdies on his round cleared Fort Worth, TX, member Kirk Boerner, newly promoted to the Palmer Flight, by two strokes.  Boerner matched Michael Barr of Lewisville, TX, with a birdie on their first hole of the day, the par 4 - 10th to finish one stroke ahead of Barr.

Senior Palmer Flight:  South Africa Native, Nic Linde now residing in Keller, TX, has become accustomed to winning, picking up his Senior National Championship qualifying third win on the Tour all coming this season.  Linde, turned a two-stroke deficit after nine holes, into a three-stroke win after posting -2 - 34 on the back nine with three birdies.  Oklahoma Tour traveler, Michael Foster of Catoosa, OK, recorded his fourth runner-up finish in eight attempts on Tour, in his first season of play.  Rounding out the top three, partners in crime, Keller, TX, member Ken Dyke and Sean Fenton of Fort Worth, TX, shared the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Irving, TX, resident Ryan Sosnowski, picked up his second win, in his first year on tour, with the help of two birdies on the day.  Also playing in his first year on tour, Aaron Sisk of Fort Worth, TX, finished two strokes back for his second runner-up finish in five attempts.   Two-time winner of the season, Richardson, TX player Sven Bock, finished three strokes out of the win, with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Bob Mulligan, of Dallas, TX, became a four-time winner on Tour, with two coming in the 2017 points season.  Back two strokes making the turn, Mulligan carded two birdies coming to the clubhouse for a one-stroke victory over traveling Gulf Coast Tour player Mark Wiley of Florence, MS.  Wiley, thought to have the championship tied up going to the 18th hole, ran into trouble on the final frame, but still finished one stroke clear of Drew Keith of Dallas, TX, in third place.

Sarazen Flight:   Starting the day on the tenth hole, Rockwall, TX, resident David Hickman, carded birdies on two of his first four holes, to take a one-stroke lead to the back.  That lead grew after eighteen holes were completed, giving Hickman his seventh win on Tour and first since the 2015 season.  Three strokes back, Alexus Clary of Sunnyvale, TX,  played her back nine, two strokes better than the front to clear a pair of players tied for third place by one stroke.  Ennis, TX, player Justyn Wilder, off the tour since, 2011 and Nick Eason of Keller, TX, split the third place honors.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  On Tour since 2009 and before, lefty, Bill Clark of Bullard, TX,  stood on the podium for his first time this season.  For Clark, starting out on the San Antonio / Austin Tour, now known as the Hill Country Tour, shifting to Oklahoma and now a member of the Dallas Tour Clark has amassed twelve wins.  One stroke back, runner-up went to, Haslet, TX, resident Doyle Fleming, to go along with his three wins on the season,  One stroke back of Fleming, Jim Wright of Azle, TX, carded three birdies on the day to record his best finish of the year.

Jones Flight:  Down three strokes making the turn after starting the day on the par 4 - 10th, Jeff Ackerman, SR of Wylie, TX, picked up the Championship but not until the final hole.  Dallas, TX, player Ronald Occenad looked to have things sewn up when a triple on the par 4-9th left him one out of the lead.  For Ackerman, SR, it is his fifth win of the season and sixth on tour.  Occenad a winner his last time out, in his first season on Tour, finished three strokes clear of Scott Sears of Carrollton, TX rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Jason Jenniges, of Weatherford, TX, carded a birdie on the par 5 - 8th to pick up his third win on Tour and first win since the 2015 season.  Houston Tour traveler, Mike Lane of Katy, TX, with a birdie of his own on the par 4 -17th finished in the runner-up spot, with Arlington, TX, member, Don Freitag and Major Champion during the National Preview at Mission Hills, his last time out taking the show place finish.

Fairview Classic at Heritage Ranch

Scott R Chilcutt, Fairview, TX (May 7, 2017)  Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club, home of the Fairview Classic on the Golf Channel AM Tour, Dallas Tour. Years past have seen some rescheduled events, due to flooding, but not this one.  The perfect weather leading up the event, to go with light winds and warm temperatures, greeted players to a great Sunday.

A few holes, specifically, the par 3 - 4th and the par 3 - 16th, aggravated many with the hold ups.  Interestingly enough the 16th played the second-hardest hole on the course, with the 4th just behind at fifth and the two played collectively 1.44 strokes over par with 34 others, meaning a third of the field carded more than a double on those holes.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $640, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $8,920 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Senior Championship Flight:  Mark Echols of Diana, TX, started the day on the rough side, made the turn three strokes back of the field, but turn up the heat on the back to force a playoff with Wylie, TX, resident Jack Whitling.  Back to the par 4 - 1st, where Echols doubled, the first time around, he made birdie to pick up his first win on tour.  Playing in his fourth event on tour, Keith McKelvy of Granbury, TX, rounded out the top three for his best finish on tour.

Palmer Flight:  Playing in his first event of the season, McKinney, TX, player Chase Peterson picked up his first win on tour.  With three birdies on the day, and -1 on the back, Peterson, cleared Dallas Webster of Murphy, TX, by three strokes.  Webster a winner his last time out at the San Antonio Open Major Championship eagled the par 4 - 14th securing his runner-up finish by six strokes over Arlington, TX, player Tyler Swofford and Michael Fagan of Dallas, TX, knotted up in the third place finish.

Hogan Flight:  Mark Tylenda, of Dallas, TX, promoted because of a difference in his USGA handicap, proved that he could hold his own in the Hogan Flight.  Picking up his first win as a Hogan, Tylenda, grabbed his sixth win of the year, all coming in his second season on tour.   One stroke back, Plano, TX, resident, Mark Anderson, carded three birdies in the round for the runner-up spot, with Arkansas Tour traveler, Kenny Butts of Bella Vista, AR rounding out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Third first-time winner on tour, Stephen Lamb of Garland, TX, playing since 2013, now has that hurdle out of the way.  A birdie on the par 5 - 11th, proved to be just enough for the one stroke victory over Haslet, TX, player Phillip Holt.  Holt, with his third runner-up finish of the season,  edged out Sal Torres, of Fort Worth, TX by a stroke.

Sarazen Flight:  Eighteen holes could settle the score when Grand Prairie, TX, player Nancy Geihl and Coty Shearer of Fort Worth, TX, needed a sudden death playoff for the win.  Back to the par 4 -1st Geihl would pick up her second win of the season and seventh on tour.  For Shearer it was his best finish on tour, with three birdies in the round.  Rounding out the top three was Rockwall, TX, player David Hickman carding his best finish of the season.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  With playoffs, the theme of the day, local player Glynn Aldredge of Fairview, TX, and Red Oak, TX, member David McCasland, needed extra holes to finalize the championship.  Back to the par 4 - 1st the duo played the hole the same way the second time around, with McCasland making par for his second win on tour and first since 2011.  Jon Neff of Frisco, TX and Burleson, TX member, James Pace, shared the third place finish.

Dye Classic Proves To Be Another Painful Challenge - DFW Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, McKinney, TX (March 27, 2016)  Pete Dye designed the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club, taking advantage of the topography, that design has been preserved by the course to create a true test of golf. Tightly mown fairways and tough green complexes, just added to the railroad tie banked water hazards and knee high grasses bordering fairways and greens set things up for a tough day.

But what would normally be tough, got tougher with overnight storms to start the morning with a lot of questions.  Hail, the golf ball size, pelted the course, but maintenance staff hurried in the morning darkness to get the course to somewhat normal status, double rolling greens and blowing off as much of the debris, times started as scheduled.  What began a warm morning would then turn from the north with cold winds to make it difficult to get warmed up and more difficult to get off the tee.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $540, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $5,010 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Playing in his first event of the points season, Andrew Braun of Trophy Club, TX, recorded his tenth win on tour and first since the 2015 season.  Braun, with three birdies on the round, edged out runner-up local McKinney, TX, member Tim Williams by a stroke.  Rounding out the top three, Daingerfield, TX, player Keith Strickland and another local, Carl Myers of McKinney, TX, shared the third place finish.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Coppell, TX, a first-year player, Mark Colangelo, starting the day on the tenth hole, looked to be out of it, but made the turn firing a back nine +1 - 37 to win the Championship by a stroke.  Michael Foster of Catoosa, OK, with a pair of birdies on his round, carded his second runner-up finish in as many attempts.  Two strokes back of Foster, Michael Fyfe from McKinney, TX, with two birdies and Trophy Club, TX, player Jalil Daneshfar, with three of his own on the round, split the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Playing in his fifth event on tour, Adolfo Perez of Rowlett, TX, with the help of three birdies on the round, picked up his second win in as many attempts.  Fort Worth, TX, player, in his first-year player, Aaron Sisk, recorded his best finish on tour, with Mark Anderson of Plano, TX, and Fort Worth, TX, resident Kirk Boerner knotted up in the third place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Mark Tylenda of Dallas, TX, continued on his winning ways, picking up his fifth win on tour, all coming in the 2017 points season.  Tylenda, carded two birdies on the day to clear, Fort Worth, TX, runner-up finisher Preston Miller by four strokes.  Scott Striegel, of Southlake, TX, rounded out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Second-time player, Joe Cavalry of Edmond, OK, recorded two birdies on the round, including his final hole, the par 4 - 18th to get himself in a playoff with Rockwall, TX, member Bob Moreau.  Going back to the 18th for the sudden death, it would appear Cavalry had the edge.  Moreau bounced his drive off the fence back into the fairway to equalize the edge, picking up his eleventh win on tour and first in eleven attempts on the points season.  Craig Merrill, of Roland, AR, a three-time winner at nearby TPC Craig Ranch, finished just one stroke back with two birdies on his round.

Jones Flight:  Forth Worth, TX, player Joshua Tankersley, carded a pair of 42's, with the help of a birdie on the front nine, en route to a comfortable four-stroke win, his sixth on tour and first of the season.  Judy Harris of Abilene, TX, picked up her best finish on tour in the runner-up spot, with Haslet, TX, member Doyle Fleming in third.

Snead Flight:  Don Freitag of Arlington, TX, commanded his eleventh win on tour and first since the 2015 points season.  Freitag finished seven strokes clear of San Antonio, TX, traveler Ethan Blase, with two birdies on the round, while Zane Latham of Valley View, TX, and Abilene, TX, player Kevin Crosson, split the third place honors.
