A beautiful morning greeted players, with the best weather of 2018 so far. Good rolling greens, decent, through the green, conditions and awful bunker complexes, made it a mixed bag. While, in the past, it seemed they only had problems with the high banked traps around the #9 green, this year was different. Taking some of the bunkers completely out of play only helped those that didn't have to traverse the others. Keeping in mind, the USGA slope and rating takes into consideration those hazards, we minimally adjusted with a local rule to get a favorable lie, hoping to alleviate potential flight promotions because of the easier course.
The good news is the course is working on the bunkers, the bad news, they didn't work on them last year. Will be closely reviewing the complex for future events because of those conditions.
The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $580, bringing the Texas Tour events total to $3,670 contributed to the Foundation in 2018.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Playing in his third points season on tour, Jack Carlile, of Lewisville, TX, has clearly been upping his game over the winter, with only two events outside the top two, including a couple of Major Championships. Carlile, a Senior Championship flight player, went -3 going out on four birdies to finish -2 for his second win on tour. Two strokes back, perennial tour winner, Nick Quast of Trophy Club, TX, finished in the runner-up spot with two birdies on the day, four strokes clear of a pair tied up just behind him. The first-time player from Dallas, TX, Marie Burns and Fort Worth, TX, member Jeremy Frenzel, both with two birdies on the day, shared the third place honors.
Palmer Flight: Ranger, TX, player Scott Harper, looked to have things in hand, making the turn with two birdies over three holes, hard-charging Gregory Haddon of Rowlett, TX had other thoughts. Haddon with two birdies of his own on the back nine forced extra holes to settle the score. Back to the par 4 - 10th, Harper would prevail in sudden death for his fifteenth win on tour and second of the points season. Haddon, not out of the top five this season, picked up his third runner-up of the season, with Jeff Bankard, newly relocated to Dallas, TX, taking home third place on three birdies.
Senior Palmer Flight: Competing in his second year on tour, Wylie, TX, player Jack Whitling, picked up his first win. Whitling, with four birdies on his round, has been close a few times but commanded the win, four strokes clear of two Oklahoma Tour travelers. Catoosa, OK, player Michael Foster a birdie on the par 5 - 18th and Richard Cordis, of Edmond, OK, with two birdies on his round, shared the runner-up finish.
Hogan Flight: Out of the country for a couple of years working abroad, Cory Welch of Fort Worth, TX, got back to his winning ways. Welch, with two birdies on his round, recorded his ninth win on tour and first since the 2015 points season, where he was a three-time winner on the year. One stroke back, Jeff Workman of Fort Worth, TX, a winner his last time out, took the runner-up spot, with Killeen, TX, player Randy Dorsey, with a birdie on the par 4 - 17th rounding out the top three.
Senior Hogan Flight: Fairview, TX, member Glynn Aldredge, promoted the Hogan Flight, after the 2017 Senior National Championship, picked up his first win in the new flight, in only two attempts for his fourth win on his career. Aldredge, with two birdies on the round, finished one stroke clear of Rick Swanson of Carrollton, TX, with two birdies of the day, and Jones, OK, traveler, Stan Wilson, with two of his own, knotted in the runner-up spot.
Sarazen Flight: With only a few Open Sarazens registered for the event, the majority of Senior Sarazen Flight players, got shuffled to the regular Sarazen Flight, and clearly didn't fold to the pressure of competing with the younger group, with six of the seven top five and ties, to the Seniors. All starting on the par 4 - 10th, Bill Clark of Bullard, TX, Bedford, TX, member Darren Bufton and Bob Moreau, of Rockwall, TX, matched each other nine-hole scores to take the three back to a sudden death playoff. Back to the course, Clark would prevail, with a bogie, to grab his fourteenth win on tour and first of the season relegating the other two to sharing the runner-up finish.
Jones Flight: Working his way back to the Jones Flight, Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX, recorded his first win since April 2017. Two strokes back, Frisco, TX, local, Srinivas Pokunur, with two birdies on the round, picked up the runner-up finish, with Garland, TX, second-year player John Grimley, rounding out the top three.
Snead Flight: Longtime, Lewisville, TX, player Ron Hardy, picked up his thirteenth win on tour and first of the points season. Hardy, cleared second place finisher, Keith Huddleston, of Fort Worth, TX, by two strokes. Huddleston, with a birdie on the par 3- 8th, and closest to the hole on the par 5 - 5th, finished one stroke ahead of first-year player Orval Miller, of Timpson, TX, taking home the showplace finish.
