South winds on Friday for players practice rounds, proved to be only a drive around the course, with some familiarity of the green complexes. Weather forecasters told us that a Northerly was coming, just about 9:00 AM on Saturday, and boy did it come. Consistent 20 MPH winds, with gusts to near 40 MPH, required a ball flight out of the elements, and the scores were a testament to those that could and couldn't.
The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $640, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $21,720 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Granbury, TX, local Keith McKelvy, coming off of Major Championship weekends in Florida and Central California over the past two weeks made the best of some local knowledge in the wind. McKelvy, with two birdies on the round, picked up his third win, and second of the points season, with four strokes to spare. Brannon McCabe, another Granbury, TX, resident, grabbed another runner-up finish, with one birdie on the day, while the second-time player, Jack Zoblotsky of Dallas, TX, a winner his first time out, rounded out the top three.
Palmer Flight: John Elmore of Keller, TX, and Richardson, TX, Steve Boughnou, battled through the day with seven birdies collectively, then heard perhaps, some unsettling instructions, you have more holes to play. The pair back to the par 4 - 1st, played into the wind once more, with Boughnou, landing on top with a par, for his first Championship on tour. Elmore, a winner during the August, Stonebriar Championship, settled for the runner-up awards, with Diana, TX, member Keith Childress taking home the third place honors.
Senior Palmer Flight: Playing a limited schedule the past two years, Fort Worth, TX, player Sean Fenton, came back with a big win. Fenton, with two birdies on the windblown round, picked up his sixteenth win on tour and first since April 2016. Two strokes back, Portland, TX, second-time player Scott Harrelson, wrapped up second to his self, with four players two strokes back, sharing the third-place finish. Tim Bush of Granbury, TX, Keller, TX, player Nic Linde, Jack Whitling of Wylie, TX, and Pagosa Springs, CO, traveler, split the third place honors.
Hogan Flight: Racine, WI, visitor, Donta Albritton, didn't let the conditions get to him, Albritton, par 5 - 4th, and par 5 - 6th, playing the par 5's at -2 to pick up his fourth win on tour. One stroke back, newly promoted from the Sarazen Flight, Walter Alberston of Brock, TX, and Dallas, TX, resident, Mark Tylenda with two birdies of his own on the round, split the runner-up finish.
Senior Hogan Flight: Kyle Lewie of Waco, TX, played a string of twelve holes in -2 with two birdies to pick up his second win on tour, and first since November 2012 at Champions Circle. Five strokes back, Granbury, TX, local Dave Hanson, cleared the second-place finish by four strokes, with David Anthony, of Cypress, TX with one birdie on the day, and Carrollton, TX, member Rick Swanson, with two birdies of his own, splitting the third-place finish.
Sarazen Flight: Starting the shotgun on the par 3 - 3rd, Judy Harris, of Abilene, TX, was able to fend off a hard-charging Stephenville, TX, player Tony Lyon for the win, her fourth on tour. Lyon couldn't get anything going on the back nine but birdied his final hole, the par 5 - 2nd to get within one stroke and clear the third-place finisher, Chad Issacs of Keller, TX, by one.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Odessa, TX, member Kent McCord, used his knowledge of West Texas winds to pick up his second win on tour. McCord, with a birdie on the par 5 - 6th, kept all the significant numbers out of play to finish three strokes ahead of a pair knotted in the runner-up spot. Steve Killion of Sanger, TX, with two birdies on the day and Bullard, TX, member Bill Clark, shared the second place finish.
Jones Flight: Marcy Glidden of Brookshire, TX, picked up her second win in as many attempts after winning the previous weekend in Alabama. For Glidden, it was her thirteenth win on tour and second of the points season. Three strokes back, Don Frietag of Arlington, TX, carded an eagle on the par 5 - 6th, added a birdie on the par 4 - 16th, to finish in the runner-up spot, with Wichita Falls, TX, member Don Watson rounding out the top three.
Snead Flight: Fort Worth, TX, resident Keith Huddleston and Darrell Lummus of nearby Cleburne, TX, need extra holes to setlle the score. And extra holes it was, four to be exact. The pair battled through the conditions matching each other scores, until the par 4 - 4th, where Lummus would prevail for his first win on tour. Huddleston, took the runner-up spot, with first-time player Fabio Mazilli of Irving, TX, rounding out the top three.
