With the Sun Goes the Frost - North Texas Winter Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Glen Rose, TX (November 19, 2017)  Squaw Valley Golf Course, played host to the two event weekend, culminating with the North Texas Tour Championship on Sunday, on the Apache Links Course.

After brutal North winds blew through for the Saturday version, clear skies let the frost creep in overnight.  With a 30 minute delay on Sunday, came the sun, little to no wind and clear skies.  Add a few new players, with some scheduled to leave after Saturday, the new day and Links layout added new challenges.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $520, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $22,240 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Three players made the turn knotted in the lead spot at -1.  Ron Finnerty of San Antonio, TX, with a new attitude towards the round, birdied the next three of four holes, to solidify what would become a four-stroke victory.  For Finnerty, it was his fourteenth win on tour and first since his promotion to the Championship Flight.  Granbury, TX, player, Brannon McCabe, grabbed the runner-up finish, his third this season, with John Williamson of Tolar, TX, and Granbury, TX, Saturday winner, Keith McKelvy, splitting the third-place finish.

Palmer Flight:  With four birdies on his round, Fort Worth, TX, player Kirk Boerner jumped into a sudden-death playoff run after finishing his last four holes -1 when leader Scott Harper of Ranger, TX, ran into a bogie run at 16.  Back to the par 4 - 1st for the extra holes, the pair would both par the first three holes, until a birdie on the par 4 - 4th by Harper would settle the score.  For Harper, it was his twelfth win on tour and first since March of 2016.  Diana, TX, member Keith Childress, with three birdies on his day, rounded out the top three.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Starting the day on the par 4 - 11th, in a format to bypass starting on a par 3, Mark Taylor of Coppell, TX, came out of the gates with a birdie and would never look back.  Taylor, added a birdie on the par 5 - 5th to pick up his tenth win on tour.  Three strokes back, the trio of Whitney, TX, J.D. Price, Sean Fenton of Fort Worth, TX, the Saturday winner and Wylie, TX, resident Jack Whitling, would split the runner-up spot.

Hogan Flight:  With the help of two birdies on the front nine, Heartland, TX, player Kyle Akins, made the turn with a one-stroke lead.  Akins then put the explanation mark on the victory, with another birdie on the par 5 - 18th for his first win on tour.  Three strokes back, John Heintz of San Antonio, TX, eagled the par 5 - 12th for the runner-up with one stroke clear of Brook, TX, player Walter Albertson, rounding out the top three after finishing T2 on Saturday.

Senior Hogan Flight:  George Smith of Magnolia, TX, made the turn tied up with Granbury, TX, member Dave Hanson after he birdied the par 5 - 18th and Saturday's winner Kyle Lewie of Waco, TX.  Smith, then took control of the contest when he birdied the par 5 - 5th, added another at the 5 - 8th to play the par 5's in -2 to pick up his eighth win on tour.  Hanson and Lewie would finish knotted in the runner-up spot, three strokes back.

Sarazen Flight:  Local Stephenville, TX, player Tony Lyon, birdied the par 4 - 16th to pick up his first win on tour after his runner-up spot the day before.  Two strokes back, Judy Harris of Abilene, TX, Saturdays Champion, carded three birdies on her round for the runner-up spot, with Michael Hill of Greenville, TX, taking home the third-place honors.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Steve Killion of Sanger, TX, made the turn one stroke ahead after a birdie on the par 5 - 18th, played his back nine, after starting on the par 4 - 11th, in even par and overcame a double on his final hole to win his seventh event on tour.  Fort Worth, TX, player Rodney Wren, already a winner on the 2018 points season, took home the second place spot, with Bob Moreau, of Rockwall, TX, and Bullard, TX, member Bill Clark, splitting the third-place finish.

Jones Flight:  Dallas, TX, player Ronald Occenad, spared himself of the wind on Saturday and arrived just in time to pick up his second win on tour.  Occenad, with a birdie on the par 5 - 12th, shot a career-low +6 to finish seven strokes clear of Saturday's winner Marcy Glidden of Brookshire, TX.  Glidden with a birdie on the par 3 - 10th finished two strokes clear of third-place finisher, Mike Lee of Dallas, TX, with a birdie of his own on the par 4 - 4th.

Snead Flight:  After not making the podium on Saturday, Jason Jenniges of Weatherford, TX, took twenty-seven strokes off his previous round to pick up the Championship.  Coming up short in the playoff at the Lakes Course in the wind, Fort Worth, TX, player Keith Huddleston carded his second runner-up finish of the weekend.

Then Came the Wind - Squaw Valley Lakes - DFW Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Glen Rose, TX (November 18, 2017)  The Dallas Tour made its way Southwest of Fort Worth to Glen Rose for the first events at Squaw Valley over the weekend.  Home of the Dinosaur Valley State Park and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is a sleepy little town, with plenty of unique events attracting travelers to the area.

South winds on Friday for players practice rounds, proved to be only a drive around the course, with some familiarity of the green complexes.  Weather forecasters told us that a Northerly was coming, just about 9:00 AM on Saturday, and boy did it come.  Consistent 20 MPH winds, with gusts to near 40 MPH, required a ball flight out of the elements, and the scores were a testament to those that could and couldn't.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $640, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $21,720 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Granbury, TX, local Keith McKelvy, coming off of Major Championship weekends in Florida and Central California over the past two weeks made the best of some local knowledge in the wind.  McKelvy, with two birdies on the round, picked up his third win, and second of the points season, with four strokes to spare.  Brannon McCabe, another Granbury, TX, resident, grabbed another runner-up finish, with one birdie on the day, while the second-time player, Jack Zoblotsky of Dallas, TX, a winner his first time out, rounded out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  John Elmore of Keller, TX, and Richardson, TX, Steve Boughnou, battled through the day with seven birdies collectively, then heard perhaps, some unsettling instructions, you have more holes to play.  The pair back to the par 4 - 1st, played into the wind once more, with Boughnou, landing on top with a par, for his first Championship on tour.  Elmore, a winner during the August, Stonebriar Championship, settled for the runner-up awards, with Diana, TX, member Keith Childress taking home the third place honors.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Playing a limited schedule the past two years, Fort Worth, TX, player Sean Fenton, came back with a big win.  Fenton, with two birdies on the windblown round, picked up his sixteenth win on tour and first since April 2016.  Two strokes back, Portland, TX, second-time player Scott Harrelson, wrapped up second to his self, with four players two strokes back, sharing the third-place finish.  Tim Bush of Granbury, TX,  Keller, TX, player Nic Linde,  Jack Whitling of Wylie, TX, and Pagosa Springs, CO, traveler, split the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Racine, WI, visitor, Donta Albritton, didn't let the conditions get to him,  Albritton, par 5 - 4th, and par 5 - 6th, playing the par 5's at -2 to pick up his fourth win on tour.  One stroke back, newly promoted from the Sarazen Flight, Walter Alberston of Brock, TX, and Dallas, TX, resident, Mark Tylenda with two birdies of his own on the round, split the runner-up finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Kyle Lewie of Waco, TX, played a string of twelve holes in -2 with two birdies to pick up his second win on tour, and first since November 2012 at Champions Circle.  Five strokes back, Granbury, TX, local Dave Hanson, cleared the second-place finish by four strokes, with David Anthony, of Cypress, TX with one birdie on the day, and  Carrollton, TX, member Rick Swanson, with two birdies of his own, splitting the third-place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Starting the shotgun on the par 3 - 3rd, Judy Harris, of Abilene, TX, was able to fend off a hard-charging Stephenville, TX, player Tony Lyon for the win, her fourth on tour.  Lyon couldn't get anything going on the back nine but birdied his final hole, the par 5 - 2nd to get within one stroke and clear the third-place finisher, Chad Issacs of Keller, TX, by one.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Odessa, TX, member Kent McCord, used his knowledge of West Texas winds to pick up his second win on tour. McCord, with a birdie on the par 5 - 6th, kept all the significant numbers out of play to finish three strokes ahead of a pair knotted in the runner-up spot.  Steve Killion of Sanger, TX, with two birdies on the day and Bullard, TX, member Bill Clark, shared the second place finish.

Jones Flight:  Marcy Glidden of Brookshire, TX, picked up her second win in as many attempts after winning the previous weekend in Alabama.  For Glidden, it was her thirteenth win on tour and second of the points season.  Three strokes back, Don Frietag of Arlington, TX, carded an eagle on the par 5 - 6th, added a birdie on the par 4 - 16th, to finish in the runner-up spot, with Wichita Falls, TX, member Don Watson rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Fort Worth, TX, resident Keith Huddleston and Darrell Lummus of nearby Cleburne, TX, need extra holes to setlle the score.   And extra holes it was, four to be exact.  The pair battled through the conditions matching each other scores, until the par 4 - 4th, where Lummus would prevail for his first win on tour.  Huddleston, took the runner-up spot, with first-time player Fabio Mazilli of Irving, TX, rounding out the top three.

Frosty Start at Golf Club of Dallas - Dallas Fall Championship

Scott R Chilcutt,  Dallas, TX (October 29, 2017)  Frost delay welcomes players to the Home of the Dallas Open, from 1958-1967, now known as the Byron Nelson. The historic Dallas course played host to the Fall Championship in the Dallas/Fort Worth schedule.  Originally operated as Oak Cliff Country Club, The Golf Club of Dallaswas the last Perry Maxwell course design before he passed away in late 1952.

Slick, postage stamp greens, gave some of the players fits, but with the ability to move strategically through the park-like setting, the Champions kept the numbers down on those greens and kept the balls out of the wind.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $430, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $20,700 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  First-time tour player Jack Zablosky of Dallas, TX, and Granbury, TX, player Brannon McCabe, made the turn even, one stroke back of the leader,  Randall Grimes, of Plano, TX.  Grimes, fell into a slump of holes late on the front nine that carried over to the back, putting him out of contention, while Zablosky and McCabe,  battled back and forth for the lead.  In the end, Zablosky would pick up the win, one stroke clear of McCabe, taking the runner-up honors, while Keith McKelvey of Granbury, TX, made up some ground, with the help of two birdies on the back to share the third place finish with Grimes.

Palmer Flight:  Starting his second season on tour, Rockwall, TX, player Kyle Sandlin, put together a pair of 39's to pick up his first win on tour.  Sandlin, staying away from any big numbers, took the lead on the par 4 - 5th and never looked back, finishing three strokes clear of Mark Anderson of Plano, TX.  For the runner-up,  Anderson, it was only his second start as a Palmer Flight player after a promotion the beginning of August.  Rounding out the top three, Fort Worth, TX, player Kirk Boerner, got off a double train with a birdie on the par 4 - 11th and cleared the rest of the field by five strokes.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Jack Godfrey of Arlington, TX, became the third first time winner in three flights.  Godfrey, with three birdies on the round, "made a hundred yards of putts", according to one of his playing partners, had just enough of a lead making the turn, to keep him one stroke clear of Whitney, TX, player JD Price.   Price with two birdies of his own on the day played the back nine in +2 and stayed clear by two strokes of the pair of Tim Bush of Granbury, TX,  and Coppell, TX, member Mark Taylor sharing the third-place finish.

Hogan Flight:  Down by one stroke making the turn, College Station, TX, resident Rick Smalley, put together a string of holes, starting on the par 5 - 14th, that included a birdie on the par 3 - 17th, that would be plenty to pick up his first win of the season and eighth on tour.  Par 5's would be the difference for runner-up finisher, Paul Lupeituu of Richardson, TX.  Lupeituu finished three strokes back of Smalley, playing the par 5's in +3 against the winners even par on the long holes.  Plano, TX, player Bill Nay and Rockwall, TX, resident David Hickman, split the showplace honors.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Ken Johnson, of Carrollton, TX, put to use his closest to the hole awards on the two front-nine par 3's following up with birdies.  Johnson made the turn with a three-stroke lead, setting up his eighth win on tour and first of the points season.  Following his first win as a Senior Hogan at Champions Circle, his last time out, Southlake, TX, player Scott Striegel, grabbed the runner-up finish, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 15th.  Two strokes back of Striegel, Rick Swanson of Carrollton, TX, with a birdie of his own on the day, rounded out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Brock, TX, player Walter Albertson, backed up his win at the Fort Worth Championship, with his second in as many attempts, bringing his total to five on tour.  With the win, Albertson also played his way into a Performance Promotion and will be setting his goals on winning some Hogan Flight Championships.  One stroke back, Coty Shearer of Fort Worth, TX, with a birdie on the par 4 - 12th, grabbed the runner-up spot, with Keller, TX, player Chad Isaacs five strokes back in third.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   David McCasland of Red Oak, TX, made the most of his birdie on the par 5 - 2nd, to pick up his fourth win on tour and first of the season.  One stroke back, Granbury, TX, member Jerry Emmons, with two birdies on his round, held the lead through the final hole but relegated himself to the runner-up finish with a triple on the 18th.   First time graduate to the Senior Flight, Darren Bufton of Bedford, TX, birdied his first hole out of the gate, the par 4 - 1st, to round out the top three, one back of Emmons.

Senior Jones Flight:  Wichita Falls, TX, traveler, Don Watson, took a one-stroke lead making the turn, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 1st and was able to extend the margin to three strokes picking up his second win on tour and first since the 2015 season.  Jeff Ackerman, SR of Wylie, TX, carded the runner-up finish, with Dallas, TX, player Mike Lee in the third place spot.

Snead Flight:  Christopher Johnson of Duncanville, TX, became another back to back two-time winner on the season, picking up his sixth on tour.  Johnson, with a birdie on the par 4 - 4th, took a four-stroke lead to the back nine and was able to stay, three strokes clear of Lewisville, TX, player Ron Hardy.  Hardy, with his second runner-up finish in as many attempts, stayed five strokes clear of Zane Latham of Valley View, TX, rounding out the top three.

DFW Tour Players Start the 2018 Season - Fort Worth Fall Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Fort Worth, TX (October 7, 2017)  The DFW Tour opened it's 2018 points season at The Golf Club at Champions Circle. The club between Texas Motor Speedway on the North and Alliance Airport on the South played its normal havoc on the scoring, but this go-round was different.

Some course set up changes, along with 9 MPH Gusting to 20 MPH winds changed things dramatically.  Average scores over the 2017 edition, dropped 1.5 strokes, and while the #3 and #8 holes, played the hardest once again, #18 and #8 jumped into the most scorable holes, with 4 eagles and 23 birdies collectively between the two.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $380, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $18,980 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Trophy Club, TX, player Nick Quast may have taken the month of September off the AM Tour, but he didn't loose his touch.  Quast went out with four birdies on the front -2, gave a couple back coming to the clubhouse and finished even par for his twelfth win in his last fifteen attempts.  Nine strokes back, Jack Carlile of Lewisville, TX, looked to have things going early in the round but got on an over par train over his middle eight holes.  Finishing with a three-birdie -3 over the final five holes, Carlile grabbed the runner-up finish with Frisco, TX, Annis Annisuzzaman rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Dallas Webster, of Murphy, TX, made the most of a birdie on the par 4 - 7th, to pick up his sixth win on tour.  Of the six, Webster has now won his first event of the points season, three of his last four years, with two victories coming at Major Championships.  Two strokes back, Richardson, TX, first time player, Steve Boughnou, cleared third-place finisher, Scott Harper of Ranger, TX, by two strokes.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Starting the day the shotgun on the par 4 - 16th, Joseph Roy of Rockwall, TX, went - 3 early on after a birdie on the par 5 - 18th, added a birdie on the par 3 - 5th to finish out his first win as a Senior Palmer.  Roy promoted after the National Championship was a three-time winner in 2017, and now becomes an eleven-time winner on tour, including three Major Championships.  Playing a limited schedule on tour, Crawford, TX, member Kevin Vansau, with an eagle 3 on the par 5 - 18th, took home his best finish on tour in the runner-up spot, with David Lake of Irving, TX, making the most of two birdies on the day to round out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Playing on tour since 2010, Amarillo, TX, member Tim Edwards held on to a slim one-stroke lead to pick up his second win and first since the 2013 Champions Circle.  Edwards off the lead for most of the round after starting on the par 4 - 14th, grabbed it with a birdie on the par 4 - 7th and finished one stroke clear of  Cory Welch of Fort Worth, TX.  Welch, a six-time winner, off the tour since 2015 while working overseas finished, one stroke clear of fellow Fort Worth, TX, player Jeff Workman, with three birdies on the day, taking home third.

Senior Hogan Flight:  2017 DFW Tour Player of The Year, Scott Striegel of Southlake, TX, picked up his first win as a Senior Hogan Flight member with an eagle 3 on the par 5 - 18th and a birdie on the par 4 8th.  Striegel, participated in 30 events during the 2017, point season, racking up five wins, including the Turning Stone Major Championship in Central New York before his promotion in early August.  Two strokes back,  Cisco, TX, player Manny Martinez, with a pair of birdies of his own, took home the runner-up honors with Jeff Gandy of Fort Worth, TX, filling the showplace finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Walter Albertson of Fort Worth, TX, a three-time winner in 2016, only played the Champions Circle event in 2017, where he took home the hardware.  Back in 2018, Albertson backed up the previous Championship with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 11th for a four-stroke edge over Rockwall, TX, member Jeremy Nolan.   Nolan, with two birdies on his round, cleared first-time player Chad Isaacs of Keller, TX, by two strokes for the runner-up spot.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Longtime tour player, Rodney Wren, of Dallas, TX, sporting a new set of irons, made the best of a birdie on the par  4 - 8th for the Championship.  For Wren, it was his first victory on tour, by a single stroke over,  Rockwall, TX, player David Day.  Day, with two birdies of his own, finished just ahead of the trio of players, Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX, Keller, TX, Nick Easen and Steve Killion of Sanger, TX, sharing the third-place finish.
