Bobcat Open - Texas Star 2013

Scott R Chilcutt, Euless, TX (May 19, 2013)  One of the local qualification sites for the 2013 US Open, Texas Star Golf Course played to its tag line, "World Class Golf.... Texas Style".  Constant and strong southern winds swirled through the natural and heavily wooded areas creating more than normal club selection questions.

While we played all the native areas as "environmental protected and lateral hazards" (The US Open qualifier played them as OB), the fact that seven groups were penalized for pace of play violations, many searching for balls that couldn't be played even if found, it's clear we'll make changes for our next Bobcat Open.  At one time we played those areas with a two stroke penalty if you entered, we hoped such a penalty wouldn't be necessary, but it appears it is.

Wichita Falls, TX player Derek Drake carded a career low round to pick up the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Carlisle's Engraving.

RESULTS:
Championship Flight:    Scott Blackshear of Hideaway, TX birdied the par 5 -18th to get himself into a playoff with Highland Village, TX member John Bohling.  Bohling got into trouble on the 5th and 6th holes, but bounced back with a birdie and went even par over his final twelve.  Coming off the birdie in regulation, Blackshear won in extra holes, recording his third win on tour and second in as many attempts.  Oklahoma Tour member James Fowler from Checotah, OK, birdied the par 4 -1st to trail the pair by a stroke and rounded out the top three.

Senior Championship Flight:  Lynn Cormier, traveling Houston Tour member from Missouri City, TX made eagle on the par 5 - 7th hole to take charge of a slow start.  One over par on the back nine, Cormier added a birdie on the par 4 -17th en route to a one stroke win, his second on the year.  John Long  from Allen, TX started out the back nine with a birdie on the par 5 -10th  to finish second for the second time this year, with Hill Country member, Kyle Lewie  of Waco, TX finishing in the third spot.

Palmer Flight:  First year player, John Padilla of Arlington, TX played the back nine in +3 including a birdie on the par 3 -16th, but lost his front nine lead by a stroke to open the playoff door for Amarillo, TX member Ben Burney.  With the course unavailable for extra holes due to darkness,  Burney came out on top of the scorecard playoff for his fifth win on tour and first since the 2011  Championship @ TPC Craig Ranch.  Jeff Bolton of Midlothian, TX finished three strokes back for third place honors.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Drawing the short straw this week, the Senior Palmer flight went off last and mid way through the back nine it became apparent that they wouldn't finish, thus reverting to a 9 hole event.  Kem Albritton of Arlington, TX picked up his sixth win on tour and first of the year.  Albritton went out in two over on birdies at the par 4 - 4th and par 5 - 7th.  Two strokes back, Irving, TX member Neal Iverson finished second, his best finish of the year with two previous third place honors.  One stroke back, Collier Nolte of Sour Lake, TX finished in the show position.

Hogan Flight:   Greg Hawkins of Argyle, TX recorded his first local win on tour to go with his Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay Championship earlier in the season. Hawkins played the back nine in three over par to stay two stokes clear of a pair in the T2 finish.  Todd Barfield of Dallas, TX and traveling Hill Country member Derrick Matthews  of Killeen, TX shared the second place honors, each with birdies on the par 5 - 7th.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Mansfield, TX resident Gregory Stairs snatched his fifth win on tour.  Stairs went birdie, par on the last two holes to stay ahead of two players tied for the runner up honors.  Two strokes back, visiting Oklahoma Tour member Hank Chang  of Lawton, OK and Trophy Club, TX player Jalil DaneshFar finished in the second spot.

Sarazen Flight:  Making the trip with a group of other Hill Country Tour members, John Heintz of San Antonio, TX had the longest drive and made the best of it.  Heintz started out rough with a triple on the first, reacted with a birdie on the par 4 -2nd, added a birdie on the par 5 - 10th  to finish one stroke ahead of Rockwall, TX player Joseph Roy.  Roy with his second runner up finish in as many attempts, leads the Order of Merit points among the Dallas Sarazen Flight.  Visiting Oklahoma Tour member Imran Siddiqi of Edmond, OK and Grandbury, TX member Greg Preissinger, both residents of tornado hit areas within the last week, shared the third place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Easy going, Wichita Falls, TX member Derek Drake nearly lapped the field for his third win on tour and first since the 2011 Tour Championship @ Cowboy.  Drake used a couple of birdies early in the round and went one over par on the front for a twelve stroke victory over Mark Helms of Broken Bow, TX.  Helms, birdied the par 5 - 10th to edge out Garland, TX player Bob Eustice for the second place finish.

Jones Flight:  Garrett Tidman of Little Elm, TX became another five time winnner on tour and first since his promotion to the Jones Flight.  Flower Mound, TX member Brian Glaser a three year member looked to have his first win on tour locked up, but became a victim of his groups pace of play penalties.  Tied up in the second spot with Glaser, Trecia Wood of Frisco, TX carded her second, second place finish on the year.

Senior Jones Flight:  Houston tour player Lu Cormier from Missouri City, TX and Lewisville, TX resident Ron Hardy needed extra holes to seal the deal.  Cormier birdied her first hole of the day and parred the sixteenth and seventeenth holes to force the playoff.  Hardy started the day in one under par over the first four holes, went to sudden death and chipped in for birdie on the third playoff hole to card his seventh win on tour and second in as many attempts. Lloyd C Reid Jr from Dallas, TX rounded out the top three, one stroke back.

Snead Flight:   Mike Adcock of Saginaw, TX took a one stroke lead to the back nine over Doyle Fleming of Haslet, TX.  After some back nine woes, Adcock birdied the par 4 - 17th to get back within one, then finished out the eighteenth with a stroke advantage to force a sudden death playoff.  On the first hole of the playoff Fleming grabbed his fourth trophy of the year, while Adcock notched another runner up finish.  Winner the last time out at the Arlington Championship @ Tierra Verde,  Luis Dayer finished in third.
