Casper Challenge a Bear at Bear Creek
Promoted Players Keep Foot On The Gas!
Scott R Chilcutt, Dallas, TX (May 12, 2012) Bear Creek Golf Club, on the edge of the grounds of DFW International Airport, just to the southwest of runways 18L and 18R, played host to the Casper Challenge at Bear Creek. Rain throughout the region leading up to the mid day Saturday start times required "cart path only" play with some recordings over 2" overnight at the club. Despite the much reported "pace of play" problems the PGA was experiencing at TPC Sawgrass for the Players (home of the 2012 Golf Channel Am Tour National Championship) these amateurs kept the pace moving great with no times over 4:50.
Nancy Geihl held off three recently promoted players, Brack Blackwood, Scott Harper and Shawn Whitaker for the Tournament Champion Trophy, presented by Labor Finders.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight:
Just one week departed from a five way playoff in the Hill Country it looked as though it might happen again but, Jeff Shores from Irving, TX spoiled the fun with a one shot edge for his first win on tour. Chad Johnson, Dallas Webster, Larry Vannatta and Neal Iverson shared the 2nd place spot.
Palmer Flight:
Granbury, TX standout Brack Blackwood was promoted from the Hogan Flight on May 2nd because of stellar play and kept the wheels turning winning his first time out in the Palmer Flight by two strokes over Adrian DelaGarza of Coppell, TX. With birdies on the 15th and 16th holes DelaGarza maintained the three shot cushion over Lake Worth, TX player John Anderson who rounded out the top three.
Senior Palmer Flight:
Sean Fenton from Fort Worth, TX shot the tournament low round 77 for his second win on tour and first since the May 2011 Challenge at The Cliffs. Four strokes back, Michael Morgan from Shreveport, LA picked up his second runner up spot in as many tries to go with his three consecutive wins. Recently promoted from the Senior Hogan Flight, Trophy Club, TX player Jalil DaneshFar finished in the third spot, four strokes back of Morgan.
Hogan Flight:
Staying with the promoted player theme, Ranger, TX player Scott Harper, promoted on May 2nd grabbed his first win in the Hogan Flight over a pair of April promoted members. Shawn Whitaker from Lewisville, TX was one shot back in the second spot and Brownwood, TX member Brenton Fillers two shots back in third.
Senior Hogan Flight:
After struggling on the front nine, Paul Burleson from Argyle, TX carded a back nine two over par to record his second win on tour by four strokes over Irving, TX resident Robert Felix. Fellow Irving, TX player Denver Roden finished in third.
Sarazen Flight:
Grand Prairie, TX player Nancy Geihl stayed on her consistent path picking up her first win of the year and third on tour. Geihl out of the top three only twice this year finished two strokes ahead of Gary Lee from Tyler, TX. Lee in his first event recorded four birdies to stay one clear of Mesquite, TX Gabriel Brisco rounding out the top three.
Senior Sarazen Flight:
Touching the trophy on his way to the registration desk James Sansom from Frisco, TX made the mojo work for his second win on tour this year over Sanger, TX player Stephen Killion. The pair both birdied the par 3 - 17th to tie it up, but Sanson finished with a par for a one stroke advantage. Bob Moreau from Plano, TX finished in the third spot.
Jones Flight:
Grandbury, TX newcomer, Greg Preissinger birdied the first and last holes along with the par 4 - 12th to record his first win in his first attempt. Six strokes back, Keith Bruce from Gordonville, TX carded his second runner up finish with Trecia Wood from Frisco, TX just one stroke back of Bruce.
Senior Jones Flight:
Ron Hardy from Lewisville, TX and Wylie, TX member Mike Logsdon took it to extra holes but, darkness would relegate the win to a score card playoff after two sudden death holes couldn't make the difference. A birdie on the final hole would help make a difference in the score card playoff and Hardy picked up his third win in as many attempts. Paul Vessels from Mesquite, TX was a single stroke back of the pair to finish in the show position.
Snead Flight:
Garrett Tidman from Little Elm, TX grabbed his second win on the season and third on tour by a single stroke over The Open @ The Tribute winner Doyle Fleming from Haslet, TX. Bolaji Harris from Richardson, TX rounded out the top three, four strokes back.
