On this Monday it was not only a sanctuary to the many species of birds along with an occasional snapping turtle but home to the Championship at TPC Craig Ranch on the Golf Channel Am Tour. Players enjoyed the day of well manicured fairways and slow but smooth greens. Those that missed the fairways didn't enjoy the substantial rough and native areas and the scores would tell who they were.
Ben Burney from Amarillo, TX would take home the Tournament Champion Trophy after a career low round.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Couple a bogey and a birdie with sixteen pars and that computes to a win for Midland, TX traveler Terry Rice. The bogey came on the first hole and then consistency led to a smart hybrid / wedge to the drive able par 4, 14th hole where birdie would get Rice back to level par finishing two strokes ahead of Tony Peppler from Southlake, TX. TPC Craig Ranch member, Clay Price of McKinney, TX birdied the 14th and 18th holes to shoot a 75, one stroke back of Peppler for the 3rd spot.
Palmer Flight: A pair of 80's carded by Adrian DelaGarza of Coppell, TX and Houston tour member Lynn Cormier from Missouri City, TX looked like a playoff was in the works. That is until the last Palmer player, Keller, TX member Guy Nickels brought in his 79. Nickels birdie on the 14th would be the only thing that kept him in the running when he doubled the 18th for his first win since the 2010 Texas Masters at TPC San Antonio .
Hogan Flight: Amarillo, TX resident Ben Burney recorded a career low round, two over par 74 to stay clear of Brenen Hofstadter of McKinney, TX by two strokes. Just one stroke back of Hofstadter, Tim Williams and Jason Krumbholz of McKinney, TX and Stillwater, OK player Ryan Cummings would share the 3rd spot. The McKinney pair would both go even par on the back nine to secure the spots.
Sarazen Flight: Willie Dozier from Garland, TX picked up his 2nd win on the tour and first since the 2010 DFW Tour Championship at Cowboys by two strokes over Ricky Gates of Arlington, TX. Grand Prairie, TX member Nancy Geihl finished in the 3rd spot, two strokes ahead of Scott Harper of Ranger, TX and Bedford, TX George Peddy tied for 4th.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Grabbing his fourth win of the year and first since the Major - The Payne Stewart Championship, Frisco, TX resident Jamie Sansom maintained a two stroke cushion over seven time winner, Barry Gray from Lantana, TX. Plano, TX player Joe Cortney recorded his best finish of the year rounding out the top three.
Jones Flight: Houston tour member Lee Isham picked up his first win with the Dallas tour this year after coming close on three previous occasions, but it wasn't without pain. Isham re injured a previous Achilles injury early in the day but was able to finish the round three strokes clear of Nick Easen from Keller, TX. Lewisville, TX member Shawn Whitaker took the show spot. Whitaker, sporting a pink hat and shirt challenged the field to all wear PINK at the Tour Championship to support the fight against breast cancer.
Senior Jones Flight: Coming off a 2nd place finish at the Texas Shootout at Redstone GC, Grand Prairie, TX resident Ken Benjamin has been on a roll. Benjamin recorded his third win in the last five outings two strokes clear of Humble, TX and Houston tour member Alan Brumley. Brumley started out the day on the choppy side but would right the ship on the back nine shooting two over par and bringing home the 2nd place spot by one stroke over Senior Jones points leader Ron Hardy of Lewisville, TX.
Snead Flight: Garrett Tidman from nearby Little Elm, TX went three over par on the back nine to record a career low round 83. Tidman would have an eagle putt on the par 4 - 14th when he drove the green but settled for a birdie en route to his first win on the tour. McKinney, TX player Larry Tolson and Oklahoma tour member Scott Bundrick from Checotah, OK would tie up the 2nd spot.
