Jerry Built - Tour Championship @ Cowboys Golf Club - 2011

Scott R Chilcutt, Grapevine, TX (August 28, 2010)  Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys sets the pace for doing things over the top.  The businessman most recently known for the House that Jerry Built, a sweet 1.3 billion dollar project that sets the standards for all stadiums is also known for the Cowboys Golf Club.  Cowboys Golf Club, the first NFL themed golf club brings a world of history to the property just below the dam of the Grapevine Lake.  Excellence along with cutting edge products and services fill the bill for the golf club that greeted players for the Dallas / Fort Worth Tour 2011 Championship.

Robert Gallegos from Grapvine, TX ran away with the Tournament Championship Trophy in his second event on the tour.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Midland, TX traveler Terry Rice, looking to make it two in a row after his win at the Championship at Craig Ranch started out hot with his typical steady game.  Rice running his first 13 holes in two under par would finish his last five holes with four bogie's opening the door for Tony Peppler from Southlake, TX.  Peppler, who overcame a mid round penalty stroke for accidentally kicking his ball would finish with a two over par 74 to force a playoff.  In the end, the heat of the day would settle the tie after Rice opted to cool off before his 5 hour drive home sparing the two from extra holes.   Even par on his last nine holes, Andrew Morsinkhoff would round out the top 3, three strokes back.

Palmer Flight:    Guy Nickels from Keller, TX was on a mission, win the tournament, win the Callaway Order of Merit and win the Player of the year bag.  Nickels was two for three after he ended up a few points short on the Player of the Year award to Bronco von Hoerling!  Struggling early with a double on his first hole, Guy recorded four birdies to finish with a four over par 76, two strokes clear of Dallas, TX member Ivan Zweig.  Zweig's 78 secured the second spot over Steven Rice from Midland, TX, Adrian DelaGarza from Coppell, TX and Bronco von Hoerling from Prosper, TX.

Hogan Flight:  Ben Burney from Amarillo, TX and Corsicana, TX member Patrick Gent made a go of it but couldn't keep Tim Williams from McKinney, TX out of the winners circle.  Tim has been close this year making a playoff run at the Texas Masters at TPC San Antonio  but hasn't won since April of 2010 at the  Canyon West Shootout  Solid play with a birdie on #9 finished the deal with a 79 one stroke over the pair in 2nd.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Carrollton, TX rookie Greg Sheppard made it count when it mattered. Starting his round in a miserable manner with two doubles and a triple in his first six holes Sheppard made a charge on his back nine to snatch his first win on tour. Birdies at 1, 5, 8 and 9 righted the ship to finish with an eight over par 80 two strokes clear of Gregory Stairs from Mansfield, TX. Late entry Michael Hardegree from  Wichita Falls, TX stayed in front of 2008 National Champion Kelly Smith from Sentinel, OK by three strokes.

Sarazen Flight:  In one of the more hotly contested flights for year end awards Scott Harper from Ranger, TX made it happen. Harper found birdies on the 4th and 18th holes to sneak by Willie Dozier of Garland, TX and Arlington, TX member Ricky Gates by a stroke.  Earlier Player of the Year Points leader  Nancy Geihl from Grand Prairie, TX and Hurst, TX supporter Patrick Gutridge came in just a few strokes short of the title.  Harper's second win on the season hoisted him into the Callaway Order of Merit points lead.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   Absent "one thumb" Neely our "go to guys" in the Senior Sarazen Flight fought it out to the finish.  Wichita Falls traverler, Derek Drake birdied 2, 17 and 18 to pickup his 2nd win of the 2011 point year over 2011 seven time tournament winner Barry Gray from Lantana, TX by a stroke.  Jim Wright from Azle, TX and Plano, TX member Bob Moreau finished with eleven over par 83's.

Jones Flight:   Longview, TX first year player Darrin Howard picked up his fourth win of the year by two strokes over Shawn Whitaker from Lewisville, TX.  San Antonio transplant from North Texas Bobby Ashcraft and Houston Tour member Lee Isham knotted up the 3rd spot.

Senior Jones Flight:   North Texas most photogenic member Burnie Rodgers from Haslet, TX finished off his fifth win of the year over up and coming Ken Benjamin of Grand Prairie, TX.  Rodgers competing in his 25th tournament of the year overcame some miserable holes using his distance to out run Benjamin. Yogi Schornick of Colleyville, TX and Lewisville, TX player Ron Hardy finished nearby to round out the top four.

Snead Flight:  In the most competitive Snead flight of the year, Don Freitag from Arlington, TX paced the field with two birdies in route to a four stroke win over Garrett Tidman from Little Elm, TX and Checotah, OK player Scott Bundrick.  Tidman eagled the eighteenth hole to tie the knot for second.  Lale Esquivel from Southlake, TX finished a few strokes back in the fourth spot.

Sanctuary for a Day - Championship @ TPC Craig Ranch - Recap

Scott R Chilcutt, McKinney, TX (August 15, 2010)  Craig Ranch is a Master Planned Community under the concept of a "New Urban" development located outside an existing urban setting within the McKinney,TX city limits.  TPC Craig Ranch acts as a center piece of the community adjacent to the Town Center.  The Tom Weiskopf design is not only recognized for it's world class golf but also falls under the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System.

On this Monday it was not only a sanctuary to the many species of birds along with an occasional snapping turtle but home to the Championship at TPC Craig Ranch on the Golf Channel Am Tour.  Players enjoyed the day of well manicured fairways and slow but smooth greens.  Those that missed the fairways didn't enjoy the substantial rough and native areas and the scores would tell who they were.

Ben Burney from Amarillo, TX would take home the Tournament Champion Trophy after a career low round.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Couple a bogey and a birdie with sixteen pars and that computes to a win for Midland, TX traveler Terry Rice.  The bogey came on the first hole and then consistency led to a smart hybrid / wedge to the drive able par 4, 14th hole where birdie would get Rice back to level par finishing two strokes ahead of Tony Peppler from Southlake, TX.  TPC Craig Ranch member, Clay Price of McKinney, TX birdied the 14th and 18th holes to shoot a 75, one stroke back of Peppler for the 3rd spot.

Palmer Flight:   A pair of 80's carded by Adrian DelaGarza of Coppell, TX and Houston tour member Lynn Cormier from Missouri City, TX looked like a playoff was in the works.  That is until the last Palmer player, Keller, TX member Guy Nickels brought in his 79.  Nickels birdie on the 14th would be the only thing that kept him in the running when he doubled the 18th for his first win since the 2010 Texas Masters at TPC San Antonio .

Hogan Flight:  Amarillo, TX resident Ben Burney recorded a career low round, two over par 74 to stay clear of Brenen Hofstadter of McKinney, TX by two strokes.  Just one stroke back of Hofstadter, Tim Williams and Jason Krumbholz of McKinney, TX and Stillwater, OK player Ryan Cummings would share the 3rd spot.  The McKinney pair would both go even par on the back nine to secure the spots.

Sarazen Flight:  Willie Dozier from Garland, TX picked up his 2nd win on the tour and first since the 2010 DFW Tour Championship at Cowboys by two strokes over Ricky Gates of Arlington, TX.  Grand Prairie, TX member Nancy Geihl finished in the 3rd spot, two strokes ahead of Scott Harper of Ranger, TX and Bedford, TX George Peddy tied for 4th.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   Grabbing his fourth win of the year and first since the Major -  The Payne Stewart Championship, Frisco, TX resident Jamie Sansom maintained a two stroke cushion over seven time winner, Barry Gray from Lantana, TX.  Plano, TX player Joe Cortney recorded his best finish of the year rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Houston tour member Lee Isham picked up his first win with the Dallas tour this year after coming close on three previous occasions, but it wasn't without pain.  Isham re injured a previous Achilles injury early in the day but was able to finish the round three strokes clear of Nick Easen from Keller, TX.  Lewisville, TX member Shawn Whitaker took the show spot.  Whitaker, sporting a pink hat and shirt challenged the field to all wear PINK at the Tour Championship to support the fight against breast cancer.

Senior Jones Flight:  Coming off a 2nd place finish at the Texas Shootout at Redstone GC, Grand Prairie, TX resident Ken Benjamin has been on a roll.  Benjamin recorded his third win in the last five outings two strokes clear of Humble, TX and Houston tour member Alan Brumley.  Brumley started out the day on the choppy side but would right the ship on the back nine shooting two over par and bringing home the 2nd place spot by one stroke over Senior Jones points leader Ron Hardy of Lewisville, TX.

Snead Flight:  Garrett Tidman from nearby Little Elm, TX went three over par on the back nine to record a career low round 83. Tidman would have an eagle putt on the par 4 - 14th when he drove the green but settled for a birdie en route to his first win on the tour. McKinney, TX player Larry Tolson and Oklahoma tour member Scott Bundrick from Checotah, OK would tie up the 2nd spot.

Gem South of Canton - Canton Classic - Recap

Scott R Chilcutt, Canton, TX (July 30, 2011)  Canton, TX the home of the First Monday Trade Days the world's largest outdoor trade days takes place Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of each month.

While many vendors sell jewelry at the First Monday we found our true gem south of town.  Located some 8 miles south of Canton is home to the Twin Lakes Nursery and Twin Lakes Golf Course.  Established in 1990 on 55 acres, the Nursery has grown to over 1,000 acres with 800 acres under tree production of specimen container-grown trees from 30 gallon to 72" boxes.  Crape Myrtles, Cypress, Elm, Holly, Magnolia, Oak, Pear, Pistachio, Red Bud and Wax Myrtle line the country side around the golf course.

Designed, with minimal changes to the natural contours, the golf course is drawn together in and around two sparkling lakes used for water reserves.  When we arrived at the club house after winding our way along the outskirts of the tree farm and through much of the golf course it became apparent that these people know how to grow things.  Only sparse burnt areas on the edge of some of the fairways would show evidence of the harsh drought conditions in the state but, the majority of the facility looked like normal rain conditions for East Texas.   Arguably the best greens the Dallas Tour has played on this year, the Bermuda greens, rolled and mowed early in the morning would challenge the players used to playing on Bent grass but the health of the grass was welcome to all.

Fransico Vazquez from Waco, TX would take home the Tournament Champion Trophy over Darrin Howard of Longview and Gregory Stairs from Mansfield.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  When the scores from the 16th hole were displayed on the TV screens it appeared we were in for a playoff between Andrew Morsinkhoff from Rockwall, TX and Midland, TX player Terry Rice .  The pair both bogied the par 4 - 17th to take it to the final hole where Morsinkhoff would par and take his 2nd win in a row after Rice doubled.

Palmer Flight:  Austin/San Antonio Tour member Chris Wadle from Coupland , TX shot his season best 7 over par 79 for his first win on tour over Fort Worth, TX member Sean Fenton by three strokes.  Fenton trying to get back to winning ways after taking the Challenge at the Cliffs event in May played steady to stay one stroke ahead of  Steven Rice from Midland, TX and Lewisville, TX player Randy Sellers.

Hogan Flight:  Gregory Stairs from Mansfield, TX birdied the 16th and 18th holes to shoot a 38 on the back for his first win on tour.  New tour member Les Stone from Huntsville, TX would hang on to 2nd place over Todd Barfield from Dallas and Greg Sheppard of Carrolton, TX.

Sarazen Flight:  Ranger, TX member Scott Harper grabbed his first win in two years on tour by three strokes over Joseph Roy from Rockwall, TX and Fort Worth's Preston Miller.  In the largest flight of the day, George Peddy from Bedford, TX, Garland, TX Willie Dozier and Ricky Gates from Arlington tied for the fourth spot just one stroke back.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Azle, TX player Jim Wright picked up his first win, by two strokes, since 2009 when he won on his home town course at the The Azle OpenJerry Gallemore from Fort Stockton, TX stayed four strokes ahead of  Frisco, TX Jamie Sansom

Jones Flight:  Darrin Howard from Longview, TX birdied his final two holes to secure his third win on tour by 4 strokes over Houston Tour member Lee Isham.  Garland, TX player Bob Eustice rounded out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Lale Esquivel of Southlake, TX and Fort Worth's Douglas Pritchett finished early and had to wait in anticpation for a potential playoff after both shooting 94.    But in the final group, Francisco Vazquez from Waco, TX turned in a career best, 87 for his first win in two years on the tour.

SKINS:

Championship /Palmer:  2 -- Terry Rice, Midland, TX.  1 -- Tony Peppler, Southlake, TX; John Anderson, Lake Worth, TX; Sean Fenton, Fort Worth, TX; Brack Blackwood, Granbury, TX.
