Doral Resort and Country Club, just 15 miles northwest of Miami International Airport is the home of the famed Blue Monster and site of this years Doral Classic, The Golf Channel Am Tour Major on August 13th and 14th. The famous 18th hole, with its signature fountain, was ranked by GOLF Magazine as one of the Top 100 Holes in the World. On this Saturday the 74 players that finished the round in Flower Mound understood its difficulty.
Many players familiar with the gnarly #17 at TPC Sawgrass found the #9 hole at Tour 18 a tad easier. The hole ranked the 5th hardest but with red stakes instead of yellow it created some better scoring, averaging 4.38 strokes.
Prior to taking to the #1 tee for extra holes in a Sarazen Flight playoff, Preston Miller from Fort Worth, secured the Tour Championship trophy with a net 2 under par finishing just ahead of Larry Tolson at +1.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Andrew Morsinkhoff of Rockwall, TX picked up his first win on the tour after coming close with 3 previous runner up spots. It took a birdie by Morsinkhoff on the 18th hole to finish +5, one stroke ahead of Las Colinas Championship winner, McKinney, TX Clay Price but Andrew's round saver came on the 12th hole. After taking mandatory relief off the green to the fringe, Morsinkhoff made par with a tough chip over the center green bunker. Nick Quast from Grapevine birdied his last two holes to knot it up with Terry Rice from Midland for the third spot.
Palmer Flight: David Wright from Lewisville, TX took Coppell, TX player Adrian DelaGarza to extra holes after both fired 9 over par 83's. DelaGarza grabbed his first win on tour by winning the playoff on the first hole. Wright had the lone birdie on the ninth hole (simulated #17 at Sawgrass). Prosper, TX member Bronco von Hoerling had his best finish since being promoted to the Palmer Flight finishing in 3rd with Clay Johnston from Dallas and Grandbury, TX player Brack Blackwood locked up T4 positions. With birdies on the 14th and 18th holes, Huppert stayed clear of Dallas player Jim Cochran who had a birdie barrage with a run of 4 out of 6 holes.
