Challenge at The Cliffs - Recap

Scott R. Chilcutt, Possum Kingdom Lake (May 14, 2011)  Less than a month from widespread mandatory evacuations at Possum Kingdom Lake due to wildfires, the Golf Channel Am Tour descended on The Cliffs Resort Golf Course for a scheduled stop on the Dallas tour.  While the resort was spared any damage from the fires the course was hot for the competition.  The Challenge at The Cliffs was everything it was billed to be, ranked one of the toughest courses in Texas, the challenge was on.

Mild temperatures, gusty / variable winds, clear skies and beautiful vistas would welcome sixty tour members that made the call to the first tee but only 54 would turn in score cards, where the field averaged over 25 strokes over par.

Grand Prairies, Nancy Giehl would keep it out of the ravines to record her first Tournament Champion Trophy and Flight Championship, one stroke clear of Steve Brewster, Shawn Whitaker and Darrin Howard finishing in the 2nd spot.

Next up, sold out Major events, The Payne Stewart Championship, May 21st, 22nd  and the Texas Masters at TPC San Antonio, June 4th, 5th.   The Dallas Tour resumes competition at the Casper Challenge at Bear Creek on June 26th where the field WILL be limited, be sure to enter early.  Oklahoma Tour resumes play at the site of the 2010 tour Championship, Shawnee Country Club on June, 11th.

Championship Flight:  Steve Brewster from Trophy Club had four birdies on the day to take his first win on the tour.  Rockwall's, Andrew Morsinkhoff, currently second in Callaway Order of Merit points,  remained steady for his 2nd runner up position of the year over Tony Peppler of Southlake.

Palmer Flight:  In his first year on the tour, Fort Worth's Sean Fenton  parred the final two holes to stay one stroke clear of Kem Albritton from Garland and visiting Houston player from The Woodlands, Steve Smith.  Smith starting the first 4 holes in nine over par would turn it around on the back, firing a 2 over par 37 with 4 birdies to tie it up with Albritton.  Newly promoted Hogan Player Bronco von Hoerling would finish just three shots off the lead.

Hogan Flight:  Kevin Weaver from Lake Worth, started out at 4 over par on the front nine but rode the back nine to just clip out McKinney's Tim Williams by a stroke for his first win on the tour.  Williams would take the runner up spot in the Callaway Order of Merit points with his 2nd place finish.  Newcomer, Ryan Hise from Melissa, TX finished in the 3rd spot with Oklahoma Tour member, Bernard Valdez 4th.
