Winter Winds Greet The North Texas Winter Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Glen Rose, TX (November 25, 2018)  Glen Rose, home of the Dinosaur Valley State ParkFossil Rim Wildlife Center, and more importantly Squaw Valley Golf Course, hosted the second of two events over the weekend on Sunday.

Similar to the 2017 version of the special two events in two days, with a flip-flop for days, the Northerly's came in just in time for play on the final round.  The course, designed for the south winds that blow across the area, needed some tweaks, for what was coming.  The track, played long, even with those changes, and the ball blowing around on the undulating greens didn't seem to help the scores.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Back on tour after a five-year hiatus, Chad Johnson of Grandview, TX, won, in his second time out.  Johnson with a birdie on the par 5 - 18th, played the front nine in +1 to pick up the Championship, by four strokes over Granbury, TX, player Keith McKelvy.  McKelvy a winner last year at Squaw Valley on the Lakes Course, carded a birdie on the par 3 - 14th, that proved to be just enough to stay one stroke clear of Gregory Haddon of Rowlett, TX.  Haddon, with three birdies on the round, held the final podium spot.

Palmer Flight:   The runner-up on Saturday, George Adams of Houston, TX, with a pair of birdies on the back nine, picked up his first Championship on Tour.  Two strokes back, San Antonio, TX, player Ron Finnerty, the 2017 winner at Apache Links, recorded a couple of birdies himself, to stay ahead of Saturday's winner, Mark Taylor of Coppell, TX, with birdies on the par 3 - 6th and par 4 - 9th rounding out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  With three birdies on the round, Las Colinas, TX, member Rick Houchins was able to hold a one-stroke advantage for his third win of the new points season and eighteenth on tour.  Walter Albertson of Weatherford, TX, already a winner during the points season, picked up another second place finish, with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 5th.  Two strokes back of Albertson, Heartland, TX, player Kyle Aikins with a birdie on the front and eagle 3 on the par 5 - 18th rounded out the top three.

Senior Hogan Flight:  With the momentum of a T-3 finish on Saturday, Hill Country Tour traveler, Scott Harrelson, of Portland, TX, put a strong +7 - 79 in the books for his first win on tour.  Five strokes back, the pair of Dale Fuhr of Missouri City, TX, with a birdie on the par 3 - 2nd and Keller, TX, resident Phillip Holt carding two birdies on the day, shared the runner-up finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Waco, TX, member Stephen Hodge, ran away from the field for his first win of the season, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 13th.  Ten strokes back, Houston Tour visitor, Patrick Richardson of The Woodlands, TX, with a pair of birdies and Shawn Whitaker of Lewisville, TX, split the second place honors.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Deep into the post-round sandwiches, Andre Fitzpatrick of Weatherford, TX, and Fort Worth, TX, Burnie Rodgers, would have to return to the course for a sudden death playoff.  The pair made their way to the into the wind, long par 4 - 8th, where Rodgers would prevail for the Championship.  It was Fitzpatrick's, second playoff in as many attempts, with an extra holes runner-up in the Hill Country.  One stroke back of the pair Rodney Wren, of Dallas, TX, rounded out the top three, with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 18th.

Jones Flight:  Unable to make the trip on Saturday, Michael Page of Burnet, TX, completed his second win in as many attempts after a Championship in Houston the previous week.  One stroke back, Van Alstyne, TX, member Tom Holman, with a lucrative birdie on the par 4 - 1st, grabbed the runner-up finish over Robert Varela, of Copper Canyon, TX, one stroke back of second.

Snead Flight:  Shannon Buffington, of Irving, TX, picked up his first win on tour, with a four-stroke advantage.  Second place finisher, Jason Jenniges, of Weatherford, cleared Lewisville, TX, member Ron Hardy, by two strokes.

Saturday of The Special Two Day at Glen Rose - Lakes Open

Scott R Chilcutt, Glen Rose, TX (November 24, 2018)  Players from around the state, along with some visiting out of staters, made there way Southwest of Fort Worth to Glen Rose for the first of two events at Squaw Valley on Saturday.  Home of the Dinosaur Valley State Park and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Glen Rose is a sleepy little town, with plenty of unique events attracting travelers to the area.

Similar to the 2017 version of the special two events in two days, the winds seemed to be the key.  Unlike, the previous version, Saturday played to the prevailing southerly's, with cloud cover that would keep it cool.  Smooth and fast, dormant Bermuda greens kept the players on their toes.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  With a birdie starting the shotgun on the par 5 -18th, Chris Ransbottom of Cedar Hill, TX, never really got into trouble and finished the day at +2, with a -1, 35 on the back.  For Ransbottom, starting his second points season on tour, it was his third Championship.  Two strokes back, the pair of Keith Childress of Diana, TX, and Grandview, TX, local Chad Johnson, both with a pair of birdies on the round, shared the runner-up finish.

Palmer Flight:  Coppell, TX, player Mark Taylor birdied his first hole of the day, the par 4 - 15th, followed up with five pars before his first bogie to pick up the Championship with only one stroke to spare.  Houston, TX, traveler, George Adams, with a birdie on the same hole, but his second of the day, picked up the second place honors with another Houston, member John Harcrow, with three birdies on his day, rounding out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Clint Dacy of Fort Worth, TX, and local Cleburne, TX, first-time player Michael Petty, need extra holes to settle the score.  Back to the par 4 - 1st it would be Petty that would prevail for the win.  Dacy, relegated to second, with Rick Smalley of College Station, TX, carding the final podium spot.

Senior Hogan Flight:  On tour since 2015, Sal Torres of Fort Worth, TX, made the most of two birdies on the back of the Lakes Course, to finish even par on that nine, to pick up his first win on tour.  Three strokes back of Torres, Dave Hanson of Granbury, TX, a winner his last time out, picked up the runner-up spot with two birdies of his own on the day.  Two strokes back, the pair of Jim Penn of Houston, TX, and Hill Country traveler, Scott Harrelson of Portland, TX, shared the third-place finish, both with a pair of birdies.

Sarazen Flight:  Sacremento Tour traveler, John Moyle of Oakdale, CA, with two birdies on the round, finished his last two holes of the day with par's on the 11th and 12th, to jump ahead of Dallas, TX, member Ronald Occenad for the Championship by a stroke after Occenad played those in +3, after carding two birdies of his own.  One stroke back, Houston Duckwall of Pampa, TX, rounded out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  It took some record rounds to get in the money in this flight, with the top three all recording sub-eighty rounds.  Mackie Crossan of Abilene, TX, with two birdies on the day, bested the group with a +5 -77 for the Championship.  It was Crossan's seventh win on tour and first of the points season.  One stroke back, with a birdie on the par 4 - 16th, Grand Prairie, TX, member Tom Stockton took home the runner-up spot, with Zane Latham of Valley View, TX, and a birdie of his own on the par 4 - 17th, rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight: First-year member, Taarron Reed of Sugar Land, TX, took home the Championship, with a four-stroke advantage over Copper Canyon, TX, member Robert Varela.

Snead Flight:   Oklahoma Tour traveler, Rick Henthorn of Yukon, OK made the most of the trip with two-strokes to spare.  For Henthorn, starting his tenth year on tour, it was his nineteenth Championship and first of the points season.  Two back, Copperas Cove, TX, member Dan O'Shea, with a birdie on the par 4 - 17th, grabbed the second place spot, two strokes clear of Weatherford, TX, member Jason Jenniges, rounding out the top three.

Veterans Day at Hawks Creek - DFW Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Westworth Village, TX (November 11, 2018)  Simply not a more appropriate pace in the DFW area to host the Veterans Day Championship.  Hawks Creek Golf Club, formerly known as the Carswell Golf Course sits adjacent to the runways at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, once known as Carswell Air Force Base.

While overcast skies, with a chilling wind, may have kept the temperatures down, the fast and true greens, heated up the competition.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Nick Quast of Dallas, TX, started the day with a double bogey, but followed with a couple of pars, then two consecutive birdies to finish out the front nine in +1.  Quast would then stumble on #11 and #14, but card another two birdies to win the Championship at +3.  Five strokes back, Lewisville, TX, member Jack Carlile, matched Quast on the back nine, with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 17th to finish in the runner-up spot.  Brad Bugg, of Ovilla, TX, playing in his first event in months, rounded out the top three, with a birdie on the par 4 - 2nd.

Palmer Flight:  Bryan, TX, resident John Harvell, made the most of a birdie on the par 4 - 14th to match his pairing partner Kevin Vansau of Crawford, TX and it would come down to the final hole of the day.  Harvell finished the round with a key par on 18th to pick up his first win since the 2018 Coastal Bend Championship in January.  Vansau would finish one stroke back and share the points, but lose the scorecard playoff for the gift card to Ranger, TX, player Scott Harper, when he finished the back nine +2 with an eagle on the par 5 - 12th.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Tim Bush of Granbury, TX, carded his best round on tour, a +3 - 75 with two birdies on the back nine.  For Bush, it was his third Championship on tour, and first since the March event at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.  Six strokes back, Carrollton, TX, member Todd Arnold, and Scott Harris, of Fort Worth, TX, both marked single birdies on the day to share the runner-up finish.

Hogan Flight:  Flower Mound, TX first-year member Steve Cochran would force a sudden-death playoff with Walter Albertson of Weatherford, TX who was looking for his third consecutive win, after winning his last two times out.  But Cochran, playing in his second event, would card two birdies on the back nine to send the pair back to the par 4 - 1st, for the playoff, where the newcomer would take home the top spot with a bogey. Two strokes back of the pair, Kyle Akins of Heartland, TX, and Houston, TX, traveler Nestor Alvarez with share the third place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  A winner his last time out, William Rouse, of Krum, TX, was looking to repeat, when Granbury, TX, member Dave Hanson, started what would become a three-stroke swing over the final two holes, with a birdie on the par 3 - 17th to pick up the Championship.  Rouse would finish, one stroke back, with Bob Mulligan, of Dallas, TX, rounding out the top three, two strokes out of the lead.

Sarazen Flight:  Oklahoma Tour traveler, Steven Pond of Tulia, TX, would hold off a hard-charging, Ronald Occenad of Dallas, TX.  Pond, would make the turn with a four-stroke advantage and hold on for his first Championship on Tour.  Occenad, with consecutive birdies on #10 and #11, grabbed the runner-up finish, with Dallas, TX, resident David Holcomb, rounding out the top three., one back of second.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Amarillo, TX, player Tim Edwards, made the turn, two strokes back of Jerry Emmons, of Granbury, TX, but would make the most of a birdie on the par 5 - 12th, to win the Championship with a five-stroke cushion.  Emmons would hand on for the second place finish, with Dallas, TX, player Rick Allaire, taking the final podium spot.

Jones Flight:  Hamlin, TX, member Vance Lakey, made the most of a business trip to Tennesee to stop off in Fort Worth and pick up his first win on tour.  Lake with two birdies on the round, finished three strokes clear of Tommy Templin of Denton, TX, in the second place finish, with local Fort Worth, TX, member Keith Huddleston rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:  It was a special Veteran's Day for Killeen, TX, member, Jack Iglesias, when he shot his record low round, for his second win on tour!  Iglesias, with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st put himself in a good position, made the turn with a one-stroke advantage and ran away with the field on the back nine.  Ron Hardy of Lewisville, TX, took home the runner-up loot, with Flower Mound, TX, member Marin Simmons carding the third-place finish.

Dallas Fall Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Dallas, TX (October 28, 2018)  The DFW Tour continued with the second event of the 2019 points chase, with a couple of similarities.  Quick greens and Airshows.  Starting out the year at Champions Circle, the airshow at Alliance Airport, had the big dog jets, that would strain the eardrums standing over a putt.  This round, the Commemorative Air Force Wings over Dallas,  entertained and irritated, with the constant buzzing overhead.

The Golf Club of Dallas, a tough, parkland style course, designed initially by Perry Maxwell and finished by his son Press Maxwell after his death, is tough.  Small greens, to go with long irons and woods to the greens tested the patience of the field.

RESULTS:

Championship:  Looking to go two for two after winning at Champions Circle, Larry Vannatta of Grand Prairie, TX, made the turn with a one-stroke lead, but that didn't last long.  Lewisville, TX, player Jack Carlile, carded two consecutive birdies starting on the 11th, added another on the par 3 - 17th to go finish one under on the back nine to pick up the Championship.  Vannatta would finish, three strokes back, with plenty to spare, when Tim Williams of McKinney, TX, rounded out the top three, eight strokes back.

Palmer:  In his first event since opting to move from the Senior Palmer to the Open Palmer, Gabriel Brisco, of Mesquite, TX, equaled a flight low back nine, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 15th to force extra holes with Southlake, TX, player Reid Darnell.  Back to the course for the sudden death, it would take the pair two holes, where Brisco would finally prevail for his first win of the season.  Three strokes out of the playoff, Oklahoma Traveler, Michal Foster of Catoosa, OK, would round out the top three.

Hogan:  Allen, TX, member Brian Hebert, came out of the gate strong, +2 on the front with a birdie on the par 3, 3rd, ran into some trouble on the back and opened the door for Rick Houchins of Las Colinas, TX, and Weatherford, TX, resident Walter Albertson. Albertson, made the move that would count, going +1 over the final five holes to pick up the Championship.  Houchins, in the lead after his birdie on the par 3 - 17th would fall back to a tie in the runner-up spot with Hebert after a bogey on the final hole. For Albertson, it was his fifth win on tour, and first since he won at The Golf Club of Dallas, in October of 2017.

Senior Hogan:  First time player, William Rouse, of Krum, TX, would card a pair of 42's to pick up the championship.  Thress strokes back, Bullard, TX, member Bill Clark, picked up the runner-up finish, five strokes clear of a pair tied up in third.  Jon Neff of Frisco, TX and Dallas, TX, player Bob Mulligan, with two birdies on the front nine, would share the third place honors.

Sarazen:  The pair of Dallas, TX, residents, Ronald Occenad and David Holcomb, a winner his last time out, finished the day knotted at the top.  Back to the course for the sudden death playoff, Occenda would prevail with a par on the first hole for his fourth win on tour.  First-time player, David Short of Watauga, TX, finished four strokes back, rounding out the top three.

Senior Sarazen:  Rhome, TX, member Michael Cox, looked to have the tournament in the bag, but a double struck, the first of the day on his scorecard, on the final hole to open the Championship door to Rodney Wren of Dallas, TX.  Wren, with a birdie on the par 3 - 7th, card a pair of par's on his final two holes to pick up his sixth win on tour, all coming in the last twelve months.  Cox, would finish in the runner-up spot, three strokes clear of the trio of Steve Killion of Sanger, TX, Kansas City, MO, traveler Lee Larscheid and Jeff Ackerman, SR of Wylie, TX, sharing the final podium spot.

Jones:  Pete Partain of Bedford, TX, with a birdie on the par 3 - 3rd, took four strokes off his front nine scores on the back, that turned out to be just enough to force extra holes, with Fort Worth, TX, member Keith Huddleston.  Back to the course, it would take two holes in the sudden death for Huddleston to pick up his first win as a Jones Flight player after being promoted at the end of the 2018 season.  Two strokes back of the pair, Lloyd C Reid, JR, the player that introduced us to the course, carded a birdie on the par 5 - 2nd, to round out the top three.

Snead:  Four players made the turn with the same front nine scores, and three of them would finish in the top three, all a little differently, with Paul Ray of Midland, TX, taking the top spot for his second win on tour.  Michael Allen of Sequin, TX, playing in his first event on Tour, finished one stroke back in second and three strokes clear of Weatherford, TX, player Jason Jenniges rounding out the top three.

Fort Worth Fall Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, October 14, 2018 (Fort Worth, TX)   The DFW Tour opened it's 2019 points season at The Golf Club at Champions Circle for the Fort Worth Fall Championship. The club between Texas Motor Speedway on the North and Alliance Airport on the South, typically has us playing in the cold, rain or even snow on one occasion,  showed a relativly dry day.  But it sure looked like it wasn't going to with the storms in the area, through about 3:30 on Saturday.

Course staff did a fantastic job of picking up a great deal of the debris, deposited from high water creeks, along with getting the greenside bunkers drained and in order for play.  Course conditions, under the circumstances we good for some low scoring while the jet's and special planes, soared above during the Airshow, just a few miles south.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Despite laying of the golf clubs for a number of weeks, Grand Prairie, TX, player Larry Vannatta didn't show any rust on the scorecard.  Vannatta, with five birdies on the round, canceled out the four bogies, for a -1 - 71 to pick up the win. Playing in his first event on Tour, Kirk Wright of Oklahoma City, OK, with a birdie on his first hole of the day, the par 4 - 1st, finished in the runner-up spot.  Rounding out the top three, Edmond, OK, resident Al Swanson, with two birdies of his own, finished two strokes back of Wright.

Palmer Flight:  Fort Worth, TX, member Kirk Boerner, grabbed his first win of the season and sixth of the calendar year.  Two strokes back, Scott Harper of Ranger, TX, finished in the runner-up spot, with Little Elm, TX, player Chase Day, and two birdies on his day, rounding out the top three.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Jalil Daneshfar of Dallas, TX, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 3rd picked up his second championship of 2018.  Mark Taylor of Coppell, TX, with a birdie of his own on the par 5 - 5th carded the second place points with Carrollton, TX, member Todd Arnold, taking the final podium spot after a tough par 5 - 18th hole.

Hogan Flight:  Los Colinas, TX, player Rich Houchins, with a birdie on the par 4 7th, picked up the win, one stroke clear of Christopher Chilcott of Northlake, TX.  Chilcott, with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st, finished one stroke clear of the trio of Joesph Roy of Rockwall, TX, Killeen, TX, player Randy Dorsey, and Darren Bufton, of Bedford, TX, sharing the third place honors.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Denver Roden of Fort Worth, TX, on tour since 2012, had yet to visit the winner's circle.  Until Sunday, that is.  Roden, with and 89, finished one stroke clear of Garland, TX, player Stephen Lamb and John Cox of Mansfield, TX, knotted in the runner-up finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Dallas, TX, resident David Holcomb became an eight-time winner on tour. Holcomb finished, three strokes clear of Michael Petit of Plano, TX, finishing in the runner-up spot, with Donovan Ackerson, recently relocated to Dallas, taking home the third place spot.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   Bob Moreau of Rockwall, TX, making the most of a birdie on the par 5 - 18th picked up the win, one stroke clear of Amarillo, TX, member Tim Edwards.  Edwards with a birdie of his own on the 18th, finished one stroke ahead of Scott Sears of Carrollton, TX, playing in his first event as a  Senior.

Jones Flight:  New Braunfels, TX, traveler David Garcia, picked up his first win, starting his third seasons on tour. Garcia, with two birdies on the round, cleared second place finisher, Steve Pearson of Plano, TX, by five strokes.  Pearson, with two birdies of his won, cleared third place member Pete Partain of Bedford, TX, by two strokes.

Snead Flight:  Cale Rice of Fort Worth, TX, and Houston Tour traveler, Richard Schram of Bryan, TX, couldn't settle the score in regulation.  Back to the par 5 - 18th, the pair would again, match scores and only on the par 4 - 1st, the second sudden-death hole, would Schram pick up the victory. One stroke back of the playoff, Martin Simmons, of Flower Mound, TX, with a birdie on the par 4 - 4th would round out the top three.
