Dye Classic Proves To Be Another Painful Challenge - DFW Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, McKinney, TX (March 27, 2016)  Pete Dye designed the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club, taking advantage of the topography, that design has been preserved by the course to create a true test of golf. Tightly mown fairways and tough green complexes, just added to the railroad tie banked water hazards and knee high grasses bordering fairways and greens set things up for a tough day.

But what would normally be tough, got tougher with overnight storms to start the morning with a lot of questions.  Hail, the golf ball size, pelted the course, but maintenance staff hurried in the morning darkness to get the course to somewhat normal status, double rolling greens and blowing off as much of the debris, times started as scheduled.  What began a warm morning would then turn from the north with cold winds to make it difficult to get warmed up and more difficult to get off the tee.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $540, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $5,010 in contributions to the Foundation in 2017.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Playing in his first event of the points season, Andrew Braun of Trophy Club, TX, recorded his tenth win on tour and first since the 2015 season.  Braun, with three birdies on the round, edged out runner-up local McKinney, TX, member Tim Williams by a stroke.  Rounding out the top three, Daingerfield, TX, player Keith Strickland and another local, Carl Myers of McKinney, TX, shared the third place finish.

Palmer Flight:  Playing in his first event on tour, Sung Hwan Kim of Carrollton, TX, showed game with his three birdies, and low round of the tournament.  Kim's +3 - 75 cleared Fort Worth, TX, member John Padilla, with an eagle and three birdies on his round, by three strokes.  A winner his last time out, Greg Digby of Lewisville, TX, grabbed the show place finish.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Coppell, TX, a first-year player, Mark Colangelo, starting the day on the tenth hole, looked to be out of it, but made the turn firing a back nine +1 - 37 to win the Championship by a stroke.  Michael Foster of Catoosa, OK, with a pair of birdies on his round, carded his second runner-up finish in as many attempts.  Two strokes back of Foster, Michael Fyfe from McKinney, TX, with two birdies and Trophy Club, TX, player Jalil Daneshfar, with three of his own on the round, split the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Playing in his fifth event on tour, Adolfo Perez of Rowlett, TX, with the help of three birdies on the round, picked up his second win in as many attempts.  Fort Worth, TX, player, in his first-year player, Aaron Sisk, recorded his best finish on tour, with Mark Anderson of Plano, TX, and Fort Worth, TX, resident Kirk Boerner knotted up in the third place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Sanger, TX, player, Steve Killion, carded two birdies in consecutive holes mid way through the back nine, which proved to be just enough after making a mess on his last four.  Killion, finished two strokes clear of a pair of players in the runner-up spot, picking up his fifteenth victory on tour.  Two strokes back, Dallas, TX, member Rick Allaire and Ken Johnson of Carrollton, TX, split the second place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Mark Tylenda of Dallas, TX, continued on his winning ways, picking up his fifth win on tour, all coming in the 2017 points season.  Tylenda, carded two birdies on the day to clear, Fort Worth, TX, runner-up finisher Preston Miller by four strokes.  Scott Striegel, of Southlake, TX, rounded out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Second-time player, Joe Cavalry of Edmond, OK, recorded two birdies on the round, including his final hole, the par 4 - 18th to get himself in a playoff with Rockwall, TX, member Bob Moreau.  Going back to the 18th for the sudden death, it would appear Cavalry had the edge.  Moreau bounced his drive off the fence back into the fairway to equalize the edge, picking up his eleventh win on tour and first in eleven attempts on the points season.  Craig Merrill, of Roland, AR, a three-time winner at nearby TPC Craig Ranch, finished just one stroke back with two birdies on his round.

Jones Flight:  Forth Worth, TX, player Joshua Tankersley, carded a pair of 42's, with the help of a birdie on the front nine, en route to a comfortable four-stroke win, his sixth on tour and first of the season.  Judy Harris of Abilene, TX, picked up her best finish on tour in the runner-up spot, with Haslet, TX, member Doyle Fleming in third.

Back to Indian Creek after the Floods

Four out of Ten First Time Champions!

Scott R Chilcutt, Carrollton, TX (March 18, 2017)  Brought back to life after floods forced a complete shutdown during the spring of 2015, it took the City of Carrollton, until the summer of 2016 to reopen Indian Creek Golf Club.  The Classic at the Creek, a mainstay on the DFW Tour had to sit it out for closure.  Back in action, probably earlier than we should, the course played hard and fast, with slick greens and some pin placements that were not forgiving.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $540, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $3,700 in contributions to the Foundation.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Trophy Club, TX, member Nick Quast, grabbed the title for the second time in as many attempts on the season.  For Quast, the -2 - 70 marked his twelveth win on tour, fourth in a row, and he is eight out of eleven dating back to March of 2015.  Defending 2015 Champion, Terry Rice of Midland, TX, a three-time winner at Indian Creek, finished in the runner-up spot, with Preston Standley of Plano, TX, and McKinney, TX, member Tim Williams sharing the third place honors.

Palmer Flight:  Never out of the top three, on six events on tour, Greg Digby of Lewisville, TX, picked up his first championship with six strokes to spare.  Digby, with a birdie at the brutal par 3 - 14th, finished ahead of fellow Lewisville, resident Michael Barr, with Murphy, TX, Dallas Webster rounding out the top three.
Senior Palmer Flight:  With three birdies on the round, Scott Harris of Fort Worth, TX, looked to have things sewn up until a double at the par 4 - 18th opened the door for extra holes with Keller, TX, member Nic Linde.  Back out for the sudden death, pars on the 10th and 11th would take the pair to the par 3 - 12th, where a par wasn't good enough.  The birdie, ensured the championship, the first in 24 attempts on tour for Linde.  One stroke back of the pair, Graham, TX, member David York recorded the final podium finish.

Hogan Flight:  After his first Major Championship win, the week before at the Texas Open @ Horseshoe Bay, Rick Smalley of College Station, TX, kept the ball rolling to the hole.  Smalley, now a six-time winner on tour, finished three strokes clear of Fort Worth, TX, member Jeff Workman, with three birdies on the round.  Three strokes back of Workman, Richardson, TX, player Sven Bock and Mark Anderson of Plano, TX, split the third place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Fort Worth, TX, member Jeff Gandy, carded a +1 - 37 on the front nine, just enough to stay ahead of the field becoming another first-time winner on tour.  Gandy held on to the lead despite some struggles on the back, by one stroke over a trio tied up just behind him.  Rick Swanson of nearby Carrollton, TX, Dallas, TX, member, Bob Mulligan and Mark Rainwater of Flower Mound, TX, shared the runner-up honors.

Sarazen Flight:  Darren Bufton of Bedford, TX, cleared the field by seven strokes for his National Championship qualifying, third win on the year, and tenth on tour.  Chunwei Wang of Roanoke, TX, and Dallas, TX, player Mark Tylenda split the second place finish.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  With the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 13th, John McClemore of Dallas, TX became the third first-time champion of the day.  McClemore finished four strokes clear of Simms, TX, member Happy Gilmore with  Bob Moreau of Rockwall, TX, rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Caught off guard, when contacted via phone, Trecia Wood was already making the trip back to her home in Enloe, TX.  Little did she know when she loaded up that she would pick up her first win since 2010, and her seventh championship on tour.  Wood, with a birding par 5 - 6th, finished four strokes clear of Fort Worth, TX, player Joshua Tankersly, with Steve Pearson of Plano, TX, and Carrollton, TX, member Scott Sears knotted up in the third pace spot.

Senior Jones Flight:  Bedford, TX, player John Partain, was another of the players that tamed the ugly pin position at the par 3 - 14th carding a birdie for his third win on tour and first of the season. Lloyd Reid, JR, of Dallas, TX, finished four strokes back for the runner-up spot, with fellow Dallas resident, Mike Lee taking third.

Snead Flight:  Continuing with the first-time winner theme, Arlington, TX, member Tim Geeslin, picked up his first championship starting his second year on tour. One stroke back, Zane Latham of Valley View, TX, picked up his best finish of the season, with Lewisville, TX, player Ron Hardy rounding out the top three.

DFW Opens the 2017 Year at Fossil Creek

Scott R Chilcutt,  Fort Worth, TX (February 26, 2017)  So long shotgun format.  While shotguns may have their place in golf competitions, like the Duel in the Desert, Charity Scrambles, etc... they just don't set up for the player experience we have come to expect on the Golf Channel AM Tour.  The DFW opener, this year moved to the Club at Fossil Creek in Fort Worth.  An overpacked field left 15 or so on the waiting list with course requirements that didn't give us other options.  Good riddance shotgun, split tees or straight tee times will be the color of the day for the rest of the year.

While the opener, generally riddled with weather issues, didn't really come into play this go round, cool, overcast and breezy, but the wet stuff didn't come until we drove out of the parking lot.  122 players made the call, with 10 Champions crowned for the DFW Winter Challenge.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $710, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $2,460 in contributions to the Foundation.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Trophy Club, TX, member Nick Quast slid right back into his winning ways, teeing it up at the Tour Championship in August, Quast won five of seven events in 2016,  With birdies on consecutive holes on the front nine, Nick finished with an even par 72  to record his eleventh win on tour.  Three strokes back, first time player, Keith Strickland of Daingerfield, TX,  stayed with the leader on the front, but yielded the difference on the back to finish in the runner-up spot. Eric Anderson of Granbury, TX, and Grand Prairie, TX resident Larry Vannatta, shared the third place honors another three back.

Palmer Flight:  Taylor Hazelwood, of Irving, TX, picked up his second win on tour to go with his victory at the Gand Prairie Classic last June. Hazelwood, with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 11th finished two strokes ahead of first time, Dallas, TX, player Michael Fagen, with two birdies of his own on the day.  Now playing out of Midland, TX, Clay Johnston and Greg Digby of Lewisville, TX, split the show place finish.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Midlothian, TX, member Jeff Bolton picked up his fifth win on tour and first since the July 2015 event in Burleson.  Bolton with four birdies on the round edged out Wendall Sheffield of Crystal River, FL, by a single stroke.  One back of Sheffield, the trio of Donald Chester of Frisco, TX, Coppell, TX, player Mark Colangelo, and Ron Martin of Rushton, LA split the third place finish.

Hogan Flight:  Starting his second points season on tour, Adolfo Perez of Rowlett, TX, grabbed his first win on tour by one stroke over local Fort Worth, TX, member Kirk Boerner.  Boerner, with three birdies on his day, edged out fellow Fort Worth member, Jeff Workman, with an eagle and birdie on the round by a stroke.

Senior Hogan Flight:  One of a few players making the double weekend after the drive in from the Hill Country, Kirby Rogers of Muldrow, OK made the second time count.  Rogers made a birdie on the par 4 - 4th count for the win, one stroke ahead of a pair tied up in the runner-up spot.  Phillip Holt of Haslet, TX, and Fort Worth, TX, player Sal Torres shared the second place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Scheduled to relocate from the DFW area to Rhineback, NY, Wadsworth Jarrell, picked up his fifth win on tour just before the move.  Three strokes back, Grand Prairie, TX, player Nancy Geihl grabbed the runner-up finish, with Darren Bufton of Bedford, NY rounding out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  With his trusty caddie on the bag, and two birdies on the round, Tim Brown of Richland Hills, TX, carded his fifth win on tour.  Four strokes back, with a birdie of his own on the round, Crowley, TX, player Dale McFarland had his best finish of the season.  Happy Gilmore of Simms, TX, finished in the third place spot, two strokes out of second.

Jones Flight:  With darkness upon us, three players finished in the lead, and with nowhere to go with a playoff the scorecards came into play.  David Farmer, JR, playing his first event from Dallas, TX, got the best of that process picking up the win. Carrollton, TX, member Scott Sears and Joshua Tankersley, of Fort Worth, TX, shared the second and third place points.

Senior Jones Flight:  Oklahoma Tour traveler, Doug Watson of Shawnee, OK, made the best of consecutive birdies on the front nine to pick up his sixth win on tour and first of the points season.  John Partain, of Bedford, TX, with a pair of birdies of his own, finished five strokes back for the runner-up finish.  Euless, TX, member Tommy Templin, with an eagle on the par 5 - 3rd, took home the third place honors.
