We Lost Yet another Great Man on Saturday

Scott R Chilcutt, San Antonio, TX (July 13, 2019)  The Golf Channel AM Tour, Texas Tours, lost another great man on Saturday.  Melvin Hill of Boerne, TX, passed away from injuries after his cart flipped into a ravine while playing in the first round of the Hill Country Classic - Major Championship @ LaCantera on Saturday.

Melvin, and twin brother Marvin, of San Angelo, TX, started competing as a team, in the special Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas in 2010 and since then competed in almost a decade of those events, with various friends and family.

After getting the itch for competitive golf and travels, he would go on to play in over 75 Golf AM Tour events, from Hawaii to Texas.

Melvin was always gracious and caring and will be missed by all his AM Tour friends and acquaintances.

The World Lost a Great Man

The World Lost a Great Man on Monday!

Scott Chilcutt, McKinney, TX (July 8th, 2019)  John Cox of Mansfield, TX, a member of the Golf Channel AM Tour, since January of 2008, finished his 135th round on tour on Monday at the Championship @ TPC Craig Ranch.

In typical fashion, John turned in his scorecard, shook our hands, and thanked the Tournament Staff, for all they did, like he did every one of those 134 previous tournaments. Within a short time later, he was taken from us.

A consummate gentleman, and truly nice guy, John will never be forgotten, as we will feel his presence looking over us at events to come.

Weather Reprieve at the Creeks - DFW Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Carrollton, TX (February 24, 2019)  Indian Creek Golf Club played host to an annual Classic at the Creek event on the DFW Tour.  The first scheduling of the event in 2018, caused a reschedule due to flooding in the low lying areas.  This round looked to be another muddy mess, but a dry front, brought heavy winds the day before, allowing players to drive to the ball.  Weather Reprieve might be a little on the strong side.  OK, it wasn't tropical, but clearly beat the frigid event at Iron Horse and the weather that's followed up in the DFW area since the event.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Nick Quast continued to roll on his winning ways.  Four events, four titles, for the Dallas, TX, member on the 2019 schedule.  Quast, with a few uncharacteristic holes, with two doubles, put four birdies on the card to even out the troubles.  Two strokes back, Odessa, TX, member Marshall Morgan, taking a break from his commute between Austin and Lubbock for work, birdied the par 4 - 7th, to pick up the runner-up spot.  One stroke back of Morgan, Keith Strickland of Mt. Pleasant, TX, with a pair of birdies of his own on the day, rounded out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Dallas, TX, resident Drue Thompson, made the turn, with a three-stroke advantage, with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 3rd.  It would take most of that cushion for the championship, as Thompson seemed to hit a wall coming to the clubhouse. but would hang on for his second win on the season after taking home the Disney Major Championship last October.  Two strokes back, first-year player Clayton Brinza of Fort Worth, TX, with a birdie on the par 5 - 6th, would finish in the runner-up spot, one stroke clear of Bryan, TX, traveler John Harvell, taking home the third-place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Six strokes out of the lead making the turn, after starting the day on the par 4 - 10th, Craig Vanderlaan, remained consistent, equaling his first nine scores, on the back for a two-stroke victory, his first on Texas soil.  Recently relocated from Lakeland, FL to the DFW area, Jay Bell and Granbury, TX, resident Robert McCabe, split the runner-up honors, two strokes clear of a trio tied up in fourth.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Tied up making the turn, off the back nine, Bullard, TX, player Bill Clark, turned on the heat coming to the clubhouse.  Clark, with a +4 on the back nine, solidified a six-stroke victory for his first win in four attempts on the points season.  John Neff, of Frisco, TX, and Muldrow, OK resident Kirby Rogers, split the runner-up finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Nancy Geihl of Grand Prairie, TX, made a run up the leaderboard on the back nine with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 14th, to finish the side +2 for a four-stroke victory.  Hill Country Tour traveler, Michael Betzale, of San Antonio, TX, with a birdie on the par 3 - 12th, took home the second place honors, with Rick Allaire of Dallas, TX, rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Another Hill Country Tour traveler making the trip north, Daniel Gonzales, of Belton, TX, made the drive worth his while, picking up the championship.  Gonzales, with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 6th, finished six strokes clear of Little Elm, TX, member Garrett Tidman taking the second place finish.  Two strokes back of Tidman, John Gimley of Garland, TX, rounded out the top three.

Senior Jones Flight:  Michael Page of Burnet, TX, and Bedford, TX, member Pete Partain, both birdied the par 4 - 9th and par 3 - 12th holes, but that's where most of the similarities ended.  Page was able to put three consecutive pars together after the 12th, added another on the 18th to pick up the Championship by three strokes.  Partain, ahead of schedule on some winter, medical work, stayed two strokes clear of the pair of traveling Arizona Tour member, Andrew Foutz of Prescott, AX and Fort Worth, TX, resident Tommy Templin, knotted up in the third place finish.

Snead Flight:  Starting the day on the par 4 - 10th, Bill Russell, of San Antonio, TX, made the turn down a stroke or two to a couple of players, but shot the flight low round on his back nine, to pick up the Championship five strokes clear of second.  Irving, TX, member Shannon Buffington, grabbed the runner-up spot, with the pair of Dwight Dickey of Carrollton, TX, and Weatherford, TX, player Jason Jenniges, splitting the final podium spot.

North Richland Hills Open - Iron Horse Golf Club

Scott R Chilcutt, North Richland Hills, TX (February 16, 2019)  Previously known as the Iron Horse Open, we tried to change things up a bit by renaming the tournament to the North Richland Hills Open.  It got rid of the rains we have seen in the past for the February opener, but apparently with the addition of "North", in the title, the day decided to be bitterly cold.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Nick Quast of Dallas, TX, kept his winning ways intact, picking up his third championship, in as many attempts, on the 2019 points season, with the Arizona Open, Major Championship, his last time out in December.  Quast, with three birdies on his round, paving the way to a -1, finish, has now average +1 over four rounds.  Granbury, TX, resident Eric Anderson, took an eight on his first hole of the day, but finished the remaining seventeen holes in even par, with the help, of three birdies to grab the runner-up finish.  Playing in his first event on tour, Adam Head of Arlington, TX, rounded out the top three, six strokes back of second.

Palmer Flight:  Grapevine, TX, member, Jordan Stockton, was four strokes clear, making the turn, with the help of an eagle on the par 5 - 4th and a birdie on the par 4 -2nd.  Coming to the clubhouse, no one was able to get any closer, where Stockton would finish, six strokes clear of Jon Colvard of Friendswood, TX, and Ranger, TX, player Scott Harper, splitting the runner-up honors.

Hogan Flight:  Oklahoma Tour Traveler, Brook Lister, of Owasso, OK, started the day with a birdie on the par 4 - 10th, added two more on his back at the 6th and 7th holes to grab the Championship.  Three strokes back, Ken Johnson of Carrollton, TX, was six strokes out of the lead making the turn, but made up half of the deficit, playing to par coming to the clubhouse, with a birdie on the par 4 - 7th.  Killeen, TX, resident Randy Dorsey, had the lead after nine holes, using the most of two birdies, but had to settle for the final podium spot, after a rough back nine.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Michael Hicks of Edmond, OK, made the turn two strokes clear of Irving, TX, member Myles Gallemore.  Gallemore, with a birdie on the par 4 - 9th, would take over the lead on the 15th, but Hicks would follow with a birdie on the 16th, to finish regulation, tied up.  Back to the par 4 - 10th for the sudden death, Gallemore would secure the championship with a bogey on the first frame, relegating Hicks to the runner-up finish.  One stroke out of the playoffs, John Neff of Frisco, TX, with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 14th would round out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Abilene, TX, resident, Mackie Crossan, back of the two leaders by five strokes, made a birdie on the par 4 - 18th, then followed with pars on eight of the final nine holes, with a single bogie, to win by two strokes.  Steve Killion, of Sanger, TX, with a pair of 42's, would take home the second place prize pot, with Fort Worth, TX, member Burnie Rodgers, three strokes back in third.

Jones Flight:  Garland, TX, resident John Grimley, and Tom Holman, of Van Alstyne, TX, made the turn, knotted up in the first place spot when Grimley made birdie on the par 3- 14th, to take the lead for good.  Holman, finished one stroke back, with Hamlin, TX, player Vance Lakey, rounding out the top three, with a birdie on the par 4 - 18th.

Snead Flight:  Annette Crossan of Abilene, TX, was able to ride a four-stroke advantage making the turn, to her second championship on tour and first since March of 2018, on the Hill Country Tour, at Delaware Springs.  Shannon Buffington, of Irving, TX, and McKinney, TX, member Fred Miller, shared the runner-up finish.
